Overview
Canadian DJ/producer Rezz has gained a cult following. Literally, her international fanbase is affectionately named “The Cult of Rezz.” Over the last decade, her spell-binding brand has blossomed from moody, basement techno into a full-blown hypnotic alternate reality.
Born as Isabelle Rezazadeh in Kharkiv, Ukraine, she spent her formative years in Ontario, Canada. As she began sneaking into Toronto nightclubs as a young teen, she fell head over heels for dance music culture. When she was 16, she decided to try her own hand at DJing and used online tutorials to help her create her own dark, minimal-inspired productions. It wasn’t long before her online tracks caught the attention of industry heavyweights like Skrillex and deadmau5.
In 2015 she signed to deadmau5’s label Mau5trap and released her first single, “Serenity.” Two follow-up EPs solidified Rezz’s sinister, downtempo bass sound and paved the way for her debut album Mass Manipulation. With her signature swirling LED goggles and hard-hitting tracks, she quickly ascended from a Mau5trap up-and-comer to a dance music superstar.
Her collaborations over the years have been both bass-heavy (1788-L, Deathpact) and pop-tinged (Dove Cameron, Underoath, fknsyd). With the release of her third studio album, Spiral in 2022, Rezz entered a new era. No longer a fringe artist, she was now in the public eye with a devoted fan base who lovingly referred to her as “Space Mom.”
In 2022 she announced the debut of her own label, HypnoVizion Records. The label debuted in October with the second installment of her special Halloween audiovisual mix, Nightmare on REZZ St.
Since her very first single in 2015, her music has gone from grungy warehouses to TikTok trends and Macbook commercials. Maybe it’s an ascent some fans will find unsettling as she moves out of the fringes of EDM and into pop culture, but Rezz is in a place where she knows without a doubt who she is and what she wants.
