The Best Way to Get to Ibiza from Mainland Europe

In The Lab Recordings is an independent D&B label operating out of Northamptonshire, founded by DJ/producer Spectra T (AKA Andy Tiller) and DJ/producer Kendot (AKA Mckenzie 'Kenny' Dean). What started as a D&B party series aimed at filling a cultural void in that part of the UK soon turned into a future-focused label, aimed at exploring the techy and experimental side of Drum & Bass. Today Kendot shares his insight on running the label, what makes the genre unique and his ambitions to expand and progress the sound.




The Early Days

Kendot, AKA Kenny, grew up in a small town in Northamptonshire called Brackley, somewhere between Oxford, Milton, Keynes and Northampton. The first time Kenny heard anything close to Drum & Bass was when Pendulum played a festival near his childhood home and their tracks drifted in through his bedroom window. Then he bought The Prodigy’s Invaders Must Die album in 2009, and after that he was a goner.




“When I got older I fell into Drum & Bass through YouTube,” he says. “At the time, I didn't really understand the different types of electronic music. It was just music and I was just enjoying what I was hearing.”




Then, when he turned 18, he went to a Noisia night in Oxford, followed by Liquicity festival in Netherlands, where he was exposed to all the corners of Drum & Bass. “After that I was no longer a music fan, I was a Drum & Bass guy,” he says, and not long after he got home he bought a set of decks and started learning to DJ.




Filling the Void

In The Lab started as an event series because Kenny and Spectra T didn’t have anywhere to DJ in their neighborhood. “We live in the middle of nowhere,” Kenny says. “There’s no clubs, so we thought well if there’s no gigs we’ll make our own.”




Their first event in Brackley was a huge success. With no clubs within miles, the party attracted a crowd of older D&B heads and young people on the hunt for a good night out. It was the tail-end of 2018 and Drum & Bass was on the rise for its third resurgence. “Our event was absolutely packed so we kept running nights,” Kenny says. “Then lockdown was the catalyst to launch In The Lab as a label. Everyone was locked in their houses, we started doing live streams, and shared guest mixes with a full track list and press pack. It was a very varied cross section of Drum & Bass, not just one genre, and not just one style.”




Launching the Label

Soon, artists were sending over their productions to ask if they’d consider releasing them. They weren’t sure how to go about it, but decided to do it anyway, and within a couple of months they had their own label with a full catalog of fresh D&B artists. Their first release came out in 2021 by a Czech artist called Junger, followed by a steady stream of releases every two months. As their roster of artists developed, so did the sound they were championing – a fresh take on D&B, ranging from liquid to technical to experimental.




“And now here we are in 2024 and we’ve got around 80 tracks on the label from like 35 nationalities,” Kenny says. “It was such an organic process. We weren’t thinking about what’s popular, just what felt right at each moment in time.”




Artistic Integrity

Kenny says label heads will always experience friction between releasing the music they like and releasing the music that’s popular. In The Lab Recordings always choose the former, and believe that’s why their label is standing the test of time and only growing in popularity. “Artistic integrity has been our biggest asset,” Kenny says. “We’re not putting out music to get numbers on SoundCloud. Being a label-owner is an abstract extension of being a DJ – you have your audience, you’re sharing music you hope they enjoy, but it’s not for their sake, it’s for yours.”




The label had some big wins in the last couple of years. They were nominated for Drum&BassArena’s Best Newcomer Label award in 2023, featured in UKF and played a slew of killer showcases at festivals across Europe. But their biggest achievement was opening Rampage’s 15th anniversary in February this year in Belgium’s Sportpaleis venue, the largest indoor bass music event in Europe. “It was a very big deal for us,” Kenny says. “I’d been watching their live stream every year without even remotely dreaming that I could play that stage. I’d never even thought that was possible.”




Looking into the Future

Looking ahead, In The Lab plans to keep expressing themselves through the medium they know best: D&B. They no longer run events but they’re still community-focused, and always aim to nurture their artists and encourage new ones to submit their tracks to the label – just as long as it’s progressing the sound. “Drum & Bass can be very formulaic,” Kenny says. “but it also has ample opportunity for unique, new, interesting ideas. We're not trying to change the world here. I'm just trying to share something interesting – something that you might not have experienced before.”

From Full Send to Full Recovery: Amsterdam’s Best Hangover Spots

Meet Pythius, the Netherlands-based producer fusing metal with Drum & Bass.

Erupting onto the scene with his Abandon EP on D&B label Blackout Music NL in 2014, Pythius has become a prominent name on the global D&B scene. He’s released two full-length albums and performed legendary sets at some of the world’s biggest events including Let It Roll Festival, Sziget, Pirate Station and Animals. He counts Black Sun Empire, Noisia, Ed Rush, Audio, The Prototypes, The Upbeats and Dirtyphonics as fans, and has become a spearhead of D&B sub-genre Neurofunk – a combination of two very different sounds. Today, we’ll learn more about Pythius’ unique take on D&B and his hope for the future of Neurofunk.



Metal Meets D&B

Pythius chats from his studio in Utrecht, the quiet Netherlands town where he was born and raised. His journey into D&B is somewhat unconventional. “I saw a Rammstein clip on TV and it went downhill from there really fast,” he says. “I got into the really extreme death and black metal stuff like Nile, Emperor, Immortal, the classic black metal bands. Maximum blast beats and guitars in your face.”

Then, his friends introduced him to Drum and Bass. "I was about 15 or 16, hanging out with some friends, and one of them showed me a track that connected with my love for metal," he says. “I’d got accustomed to that kind of energy and intensity in the music.” It reminded him of the music that played in the background of his favourite video game Resident Evil – and in that moment he opened the door to a new world of sound.



His journey into D&B began first with the discovery of other Utrecht D&B artists like Black Sun Empire, and then Europe-wide tours of D&B festivals where he got a taste for the full spectrum of the genre, and fell in love with the darkest corners of it.

Crafting a Career in Music Production

Pythius’s journey into professional music began with formal training at the Herman Brood Academie in Utrecht where he honed his technical skills, studying alongside the likes of Martin Garrix. "I graduated in 2014 and immediately immersed myself in the industry," he says. He bagged himself an internship with Black Sun Empire’s Blackout Music NL imprint where he learned the ropes of the music business while refining his craft.



Just like the rest of the D&B scene, the COVID-19 pandemic offered a big opportunity to slow down and focus on production. “It was heavy but it quietened everything down around me,” he says. “I have ADD so I get overwhelmed and it was nice to step back and work on engineering. My sound improved a lot in that time.”

The isolation allowed him to experiment more freely, and that’s when he laid the foundations for his second album Turmoil, released in 2023.



Pythius’ sound is as unique as it is extreme. He’s regularly booked to play metal festivals as well as D&B ones, and he feels that both genres share a similarly intense, visceral listening experience. He’s become well known for his progression of the D&B subgenre Neurofunk, a style characterized by its complex, dark, and technical sound design. "Neurofunk appeals to a more niche audience," Pythius says. “The sub-genre doesn’t really benefit from the global rave of D&B because the sound that’s popular right now is more mainstream. This stuff is harder and more extreme so it doesn’t reach a big audience.”



However, Pythius remains optimistic about its future, and says its current popularity could be a gateway for fans to explore deeper and more intricate styles.

Pythius often incorporates live instruments, particularly guitars, into his productions as a way to bridge his past with his present and set him apart from his peers. "I enjoy experimenting with metal elements within my tracks," he says.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Pythius

With each new release, Pythius continues to capture the essence of his influences while carving out a space for himself in the D&B realm. He just released part one of remixes of his Turmoil album, and he has shows coming up in Bratislava, Krakow, London and Budapest, as well as a ton more music in the pipeline. He thinks D&B is at a major crossroads, full to the brim with opportunities for innovation and exploration. "I think the fruits of the current popularity will eventually reach the darker subgenres," he says.



His dedication to blending the intensity of metal with the intricacies of D&B hasn’t just shaped his identity as an artist, but set a precedent for future experimenters.

Miguel Gallardo has been steadily carving his name and climbing up the ladder in the underground music scene, and his rise feels as authentic as his sound. Originally from Sinaloa, Mexico, and now based in Miami, Miguel’s journey is one of raw talent, persistent work ethic, and undeniable love for music. From playing bongos as a kid to founding his own event brand, Untamed, Miguel has always had an innate sense of rhythm. His path through the industry has been driven by a passion for exploring a wide variety of genres and embracing a limitless approach to music, with a sound that shifts effortlessly between minimal, tech house, deep tech, and more.



As the founder of Untamed, an event brand that’s rapidly gaining a reputation for showcasing fresh talent and producing indelible experiences, Miguel is building a community centered around inclusivity and discovery. His sets, known for their energy and unpredictability, have lit up some of the most noteworthy venues across the country, including Sound Nightclub in L.A., Temple in San Francisco, Floyd, and Jolene Soundroom in Miami. From playing bongos as a kid to singing in mariachi bands, you’ve had a rich musical upbringing. How did those early hands-on experiences with rhythm and traditional music shape your journey and style as a house music DJ and producer today?

Playing the bongos specifically gave me an ear for drums, and that’s what I specialize in the most when I produce (percussion). It taught me the natural sound and swing of the bongos.




How did your 12 years of wrestling influence your mindset and work ethic in the music industry?

One of the main things it taught me is that you can achieve anything you want in life—you just have to put in the work, even when no one is watching. Secondly, it taught me to do everything possible to make things happen now rather than waiting around or making excuses that you’re too young.




Carl Cox’s YouTube set had a huge impact on you at 14. What was it about his performance that grabbed your attention?

The drum groove and sound were things I was naturally drawn to already, so I was completely captivated by the sound of the records he was playing during that set.




What kind of atmosphere do you aim to create at an Untamed event, and how do you go about achieving that?

The atmosphere I aim to create is one where everyone feels welcome, regardless of race, sexual orientation, or any other preferences. I also curate the lineups in a way that guarantees good music from start to finish. I want people to come to our events without worrying about set times or who’s playing, but knowing they’ll enjoy the music and discover an artist they’ve never seen before.




You’ve played some iconic venues like Sound Nightclub in L.A. and Temple in San Francisco. Do any of those shows hold a special place in your memory?

Every show is special in its own way to me. Every time I play in L.A., it’s a family reunion and a full-circle moment for me because even my parents come out to the shows. When I play at Temple SF, I play for the people I used to throw events for when there were no parties during the pandemic, which was the start of me throwing events.




You’re known for refusing to be boxed into one genre. How do you approach blending styles like minimal, deep tech, and disco into your sets?

Each sound has a time and place, and I play according to that. If I think a specific record would fit well in the set at that moment, I throw it in regardless of the sub-genre. Good music is good music, period.




What’s your process when putting together a set? Do you plan ahead, or let the vibe of the night guide your selections?

I never plan my sets in advance. I always get to the event or party before my set to read the energy of the room and the people, then I play according to that energy.




You’re set to launch Untamed Records in 2025. What’s your long-term vision for the label, and how will it reflect your own artistic style?

My vision for Untamed Records is to find good music that deserves to be heard and that I know others will enjoy. Now that we have the event behind it, we can use that as a platform for artists to expose themselves and grow.




What has been the most challenging aspect of balancing your career as an artist and your role as an event curator with Untamed?

There’s no challenge at all because being an artist and throwing events are both special in their own ways. I enjoy doing both, and they complement each other tremendously. You can curate events to your liking and have full control.



If you could collaborate with any artist right now, who would it be and why?

Easy, Seth Troxler. He’s mentored me, encouraged me to push my limits, and taught me to be creative in my sets—whether it’s creating effects with acapellas or not being afraid to experiment. He’s been a huge inspiration to me, and my relationship with him is something I cherish.



House music is constantly evolving—what trends or shifts in the scene are exciting you the most right now? What trends or shifts are turning you off the most?

What excites me is that the U.S. is starting to catch up on incredible house music.

What do you think is missing from the current house music scene that you hope to bring through your events and label?

Good music from all over the world. There’s so much more than just tech house, and with my versatility as an artist, I aspire to educate the crowd on different sounds they may have never been exposed to.



When you’re not behind the decks or organizing events, how do you unwind and stay grounded?

Working out, hanging out with those closest to me, going to the beach, and just relaxing.

If you could play a set anywhere in the world, from a famous club to a dream festival, where would it be?

If you had to describe the vibe of your sets using only three words, what would they be?

From my point of view: experimental, fun, and unforgettable.



What’s a track that never fails to get the crowd going, no matter where you play?

I honestly never really play the same songs. I always try to play differently than I did before. There’s so much good music out there that I rarely find myself playing the same track.

You’re given a superpower to instantly master any instrument. Which one would you choose and why?

The piano. You can get better with synthesizing and learning chord progressions, keys, and stuff like that.

Launched in 2015 as a weekly radio show, FLOW quickly expanded into an international event brand and record label, symbolizing the Dutchman's vision for a ravishing and groove-fueled experience that fosters community, connection, and creativity.




The concept behind FLOW is simple yet powerful: to bring people into a "flow state" through music, where the energy on the dancefloor feels natural and effortless. This ethos extends far beyond the music itself; it’s embedded into every event Rizardo curates. From nightclub floors like Pacha Ibiza and fabric London to major stage takeovers at festivals like Extrema Outdoor in Belgium and Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), FLOW events are designed to provide a space for music, atmosphere, and crowd interaction. This past summer, Rizardo hosted and sold out his own festival for FLOW in collaboration with Dutch party brand JOY, attracting an impressive 14,000 attendees.

FLOW events stand out for their meticulous curation of talent. Rizardo’s lineups often mix seasoned veterans with rising stars, presenting a wide range of sounds while staying firm in the rhythmic, groove-heavy house that has defined his career. Names like East End Dubs, Prunk, Sidney Charles, and Lauren Lo Sung have been featured at FLOW events, ensuring a consistently high caliber of tasteful and wicked music.




In addition to the event series, FLOW has expanded into a record label under the LTF Records banner, which Rizardo launched in 2020. The label has released anthems like "Bloom" and the “Dance to the Rhythm” EP, both by Franky himself, as well as other releases from talents within the house music space like Simone Liberali, Tre Reynolds, Ferra Black, and many more exciting names. All of these tracks have topped the charts and been rinsed at big festivals by the most renowned artists in the game.




But what sets FLOW apart is its emphasis on building a lasting connection with its community. Fans don’t just attend FLOW events—they become part of the movement. With his expansion into territories like the U.S. and Asia, Rizardo has been taking FLOW internationally, proving that house music, when curated thoughtfully, has the power to unite people from all walks of life.

Franky Rizardo’s FLOW: More Than Just a Party

It’s fair to say Mandidextrous’ music has zero chill. Hovering around the one million BPM mark, their music is made for explosive dance floor moments and designed to release every ounce of excess energy. Although Mandidextrous is well known-for their multi-genre productions, they came up in the D&B and jungle scenes, heavily influenced by the UK’s free party community in the late ‘00s and early ‘10s. Today, they’re one of D&B’s biggest names, and arguably the most versatile producer on the circuit. We caught up with M to learn more about their journey into D&B and jungle, their perspective on the latest wave of the genre and how the scene has changed since those hedonistic days of free parties next to motorways.



A Community of Misfits



Mandidextrous, AKA M Gordon, never fit into society’s prescribed boxes, so when they discovered the free party scene in their mid-teens, it was a huge relief. Born and raised in Buckinghamshire in the south of England, M had a turbulent childhood and found a sense of home and community in the D&B and jungle scenes.




“I struggle to fit into society in many ways, being trans,” they say, speaking from their studio in Bristol. “So it was a good space for me.”




There wasn’t a huge amount of queer representation in the D&B scene back then, but it was a space for people who didn’t quite fit in. Drum & Bass was conceived on the outskirts of society – parties weren’t confined to four walls, but held in open spaces like barns, fields and tunnels instead. That’s where the culture flourished, unconfined, and where M first began DJing their breakneck BPMs. “I started mixing Drum & Bass on vinyl, and ended up being part of numerous sound systems down south, doing the illegal rave thing,” they say.




Multi-Genre Madness




Around the time M immersed themselves in production, they found themselves drawn to London’s techno underground. That’s when their multi-genre journey began, and M started merging D&B and techno to create a unique sound known as jungletek. Their early releases on their own Amen4Tekno imprint, Medusa Records and Bass Militia Records changed the game entirely, redirecting the UK’s underground towards a brand new style that made shockwaves across many scenes.




“I've been straddling two different stratospheres of music, and working professionally in both,” says M. "I’m a multi-genre person myself, and I'm multifaceted in many different ways.”




In the months preceding COVID, M found themselves gravitating back towards pure D&B, and started producing more and more of it during lockdown.




“I was scared when I first came back to it,” they say. “But now I’ve met so many people that I’ve respected for so long, and they’ve welcomed me with open arms.”




And it’s no wonder, really. M is one of the most progressive talents in the D&B scene today, with many new artists entering the scene through the doors they kicked open. Mandidextrous is a graduate of the gender equality-focused D&B collective EQ50 mentorship, and their performance at Let It Roll in Prague last year has gone down in history as one of the most unhinged in its history. Their track “Hold Your Rhythm” closed out Boomtown in 2022, where they now have their own venue Spectrum 360, and in the last few months alone they’ve played at Hospitality Paris, Lowlands, Hospitality on the Beach, and their own Mandidextrous & Friends club night at XOYO. 




The Third Wave




M is fully aware that the third wave of D&B is very different to the first and second. “Drum & Bass is inherently quite a masculine, male-dominated scene, but we've made progress over the years and now there’s so much more diversity coming through,” they say.




Now, what used to be a closed scene has been cracked wide open. “The accessibility has become greater,” M says. “So therefore we have a lot more people putting their hands in the pot knowing they want to do this.”




It’s a real departure to the closed nature of the first wave of D&B, but M believes the core of the culture will always shine through. “All the original Dons like Ray Keith, DJ hype, DJ Zinc, Fabio, and Grooverider, when they started making music it was a hard task,” M says. “Production equipment wasn’t readily available, everything was hardware, external, nothing was on computers. But you’ve still got tracks from the late ‘90s getting played every weekend now.”




Looking to the Future




Mandidextrous has big plans for their multi-faceted artistry and the values they bring with it. On November 8th 2024 they had a huge, curated headline show with their Spectrum 360 event brand in their hometown of Bristol. They have a ton of releases lined up including on their own label Amen4Tekno, and with summer coming to an end, they’re fully geared up to get back onto the club circuit.




“I love club season,” M says. “There’s something about playing a 200 cap sweaty club with loads of ravers going nuts that I buzz off so hard.”

Currently residing in Tel Aviv, the capital of Israeli electronic music, but born and raised in the magical streets of Jerusalem, Roy Rosenfeld—whose name has become dominant in melodic house and techno—has made a serious impact in stripped-down electronic music, a style often overshadowed by more commercial subgenres.

While many associate Rosenfeld with lush, melodic tunes, few may realize the depth of his exploration into minimalist structures and how he uses this style to create a gripping and enthralling experience for listeners.



Minimalism in electronic music focuses on stripping down elements to their core, emphasizing repetition, subtle changes, and space. Rosenfeld has applied this approach to create tracks that feel expansive without overwhelming the listener. His ability to blend simplicity with detail is what makes his pared-back work stand out. This Week's Parties in Ibiza (Sept 12 - Sept 18)

The MC has been part of jungle and Drum & Bass culture since its inception. Their role is to keep the energy through the roof, to connect the DJ with the crowd and to guide the audience through the night. They’re known and respected within the community, they’re loud, they’re charismatic, and they have a whole lot to say. And – more often than not – they’re male.


But with the recent resurgence of D&B, more and more women have started making the move towards MCing, and many of them are delivering messages that the D&B crowd might not have heard before.




Vispera is one of them.




From Poet to MC



Eve Piper was a shy kid. She preferred to sit back and observe what was going on around her than steal the show. But that all changed when she went to her first slam poetry workshop as a teen. Suddenly, all those observations bubbled up to the surface and came out in the form of astute, quick-fire bars.




Born and raised in Manchester, Eve immersed herself in the poetry scene at university in Bristol, and received mentorship at the Roundhouse in a Radio 1-sponsored programme called Words First. “At the same time, I was a full-on raver,” she says. “I was going to illegal raves and free parties. I loved the way it pushed boundaries. It was illicit, subversive, and I was writing about these themes in my poetry.”




It wasn’t long before those two passions combined. “I never really saw myself as a MC because I’m a white girl from Chorlton who was quite nerdy in school,” she laughs. “But I started making more friends and gradually built the confidence to put my spoken word stuff over the Drum & Bass beat and try to MC.”




That’s when Vispera was born.




Something to Say




Over lockdown, Eve teamed up with a DJ friend to secure a streaming residency at Goat Shed in Bristol, and then joined forces with diverse D&B collectives including Full Spectrum Bristol and Sisterhood Birmingham. “I got more confident, I learnt to host, and learnt how to influence the energy in the room,” she says. “You’re the bridge between the music and the ravers.”




Because she’s naturally quiet, it took time and practice to learn the skills it took to influence a crowd, but she was motivated by the fact that she had so much to say.




“There is a culture of misogyny within Drum & Bass, especially with some ends of the MC spectrum, and some of the messages put across in the raves angered me and gave me the fire to share a different narrative,” she says.




The Power of Community




Joining like-minded collectives helped strengthen Vispera’s purpose. She’s now flying the flag for female MCs in the UK, and she’s a resident artist for Phase Records, Sisterhood Birmingham and Off the Record 0161. She’s released four collaboration tracks since 2023 with the likes of Ominous, Gifta and Xyde, and she's about to drop her debut EP on September 12th via Dropjaw Audio.




As a concept, the Eden EP has been two years in the making, with four tracks created with producers based in the four cities she feels most connected to – Birmingham, London, Bristol and Manchester. “I wanted to honour my real name, which is Eve,” she says. “I wanted to re-think the story of the fall of man, and create an empowering feminist message. It’s an allegory of what it feels to be a female in a male-dominated scene.




The project spans the full-spectrum of the Drum & Bass sphere, from the dark, rolling rhythms of “COTR (Creatures of the Rave)” to the ethereal breaks of “Garden Path.” Vispera’s vocals glide from Biblical references to rave-lore, all of it underpinned by personal narratives that shine a feminist lens on the scene that she loves.




“The rave space is so important, sacred and meaningful, there’s moments of euphoria, real life memories and connections made, and the person who’s narrating that space has a responsibility to fill it with the right words,” she says. “I want my words to empower people – especially women.”




This sentiment is a breath of fresh air, and a true testament to the corner D&B has turned in recent years. Now, thanks to artists like Vispera, doors aren’t just opening for women. Women are the ones opening the doors.
