5 House Acts With Surprising Pasts

Mike Di Scala and Dave Whelan are the names behind the iconic British duo that is CamelPhat. Formed in 2004, the pair was first focused on earning their stripes behind the decks and learning the dance floor ecosystem. As self-proclaimed ‘club kids’ who grew up in nightclubs, they quickly learned how to put their audience in a state of pure joy with their incredible energy and even better music selections.

The thoroughbred musicians released a number of EPs and singles on Vice and Nervous Records, but as they picked up steam they were signed to Dutch EDM label Spinnin’ Records in 2014. CamelPhat enjoyed chart topping success in Belgium with tracks such as "Constellations," "Paradigm," "Make 'Em Dance," and "The Act,". However, it wasn’t until 2017 that they chiseled their place in the dance/electronic scene. Alongside fellow producer, Elderbrook, the three released the Grammy-nominated song “Cola”. The upbeat track became an instant hit, consistent festival highlight, and was the backdrop of summers around the world.

With the success of the instant dance anthem came more high-profile collaborations including tracks with Green Velvet, Jake Bugg, Jem Cooke, and Yannis from Foals. They also became regulars in the festival circuit, performing across America, the UK, Europe and beyond. Some of their more notable appearances have been at Glastonbury, Coachella, Creamfields, Parklife, We Are FSTVL, Tomorrowland, SW4, and Groove.

In October of 2020 the deep house megastars finally gave their fans what they were long waiting for, their full length debut album. “Dark Matter” came in the form of a 22-track adventure, packed with dark, melodic synths, subby basslines, emotive lyrics, and several collaborations. Since the album dropped the English duo has kept busy releasing singles and EPs, as well as traveling internationally to keep up with the demand of their adoring fans.
