Roar: The Track that Marked Patrice Bäumel's Big Break

 is DJ and producer from Germany and is currently based in Portugal. He credits his adoptive father, a music journalist, with introducing him to many of the sounds that went on to greatly influence his career, such as Depeche Mode, Skinny Puppy, The Cure, and Yello. In addition to this unofficial music education, the artist’s formative years growing up in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin wall, greatly informed the way he saw the world as a young man. 

Growing up in this communist state, Bäumel also struggled with being one of the only black residents in his largely white community. Informed by his entrepreneurial spirit, his unique perspective on the world and his music took shape. During his time in Amsterdam, he embarked on his DJing journey at the young age of 17 primarily pursuing it as a hobby until the 2000s.

With the release of his smash hit “Roar,” in 2008 on Get Physical Music, Bäumel experienced his big break, attracting attention from BBC Radio 1’s 

. Securing a residency at Amsterdam’s now defunct Trouw, regarded as one of Holland’s most popular clubs, was the next step on Bäumel’s path to the top.

Today, Bäumel’s is a name that is revered on festival and event lineups and his career is a blueprint for many of the dance music industry’s up-and-comers. He has played across the world at notable venues such as Ibiza’s Ushuaïa, Amsterdam’s Shelter, and London’s fabric, and at festivals such Awakenings, Burning Man, Tomorrowland and CRSSD. In February 2022, Bäumel was the cover star of Beatport.
