REFUGE
Overview
Housed within a 19th century industrial complex in East Williamsburg, Refuge is a Brooklyn dance club built around high fidelity sound and intentional design. Hidden behind a maze of weathered brick buildings, the nearly 200 year old freestanding structure creates a sense of separation from the city, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the music and the dancefloor.
Founded by longtime scene figures John Dimatteo and Craig Shorty Benabeu, Refuge was seven years in the making. Created in response to what they felt New York was missing, the club looks to foundational institutions such as Paradise Garage, The Sound Factory, Zanzibar, and Space Ibiza as guiding references. The mission is simple: restore a standard of clubbing where sound quality, flow, and atmosphere come before spectacle.

The venue was designed from the sound outward. At its core is a custom built six way system known as REX, featuring horn loaded mids, vintage JBL components, and carefully angled speaker stacks that frame a perfectly square dancefloor. Extensive acoustic testing shaped the layout, ceiling treatments, and positioning to ensure clarity and balance throughout the room.
Beneath the crowd sits a custom floated maple wood dancefloor engineered to flex and return energy with each step. Nearly four inches thick, the floor plays a direct role in both movement and acoustics. Overhead mirror balls and circular lighting enhance the room without distracting from it, while a strict no phone policy keeps attention centered on the music.

Programming is rooted in consistency and curation rather than headline chasing. Refuge has hosted a wide range of respected local and international artists including Paco Osuna, Nicole Moudaber, Manda Moor, Sirus Hood, OMRI., Liam Palmer, Elliot Schooling, Heidy P, Discip, Braydon Terzo, EDD, Iglesias, Jean Pierre, and Chris Di Perri. Lineups are built around shared sensibilities, often featuring multiple artists treated equally, with extended hours that allow nights to unfold naturally.
Refuge positions itself as both tribute and contribution to New York nightlife culture, offering a space where high fidelity sound, thoughtful design, and community remain at the forefront.
