5 House Acts With Surprising Pasts

Kye Gibbon and Matt Robson Scott are the two that make up Gorgon City, a DJ duo that has  soundly proved themselves to be of the most respected producers in contemporary dance music. They have been continuously rewarded for their unmistakable sound of classic, bass-driven house music, gaining over 10 million single and 1.5 billion global streams.

Gorgon City began to take shape when these two U.K.-based producers – Foamo, Kye Gibbon’s solo moniker, and Rack N Ruin, Matt Robson Scott’s solo identity – started to collaborate in 2012. As a result of their first recording sessions, the Crypt EP was issued February of that same year on the Black Butter label. This label previously worked with Rack N Ruin, aka Matt Robson Scott, to release several of his own singles. Black Butter also worked with the multi-platinum-selling group, Rudimental. Gorgon City’s big break came in February of 2013, with the release of their Real EP. The bass-oriented track, made in collaboration with DJ Yasmin Shahmir, became a hit single in the U.K. In the summer of 2013, Gibbon and Robson Scott worked together with the innovative Clean Bandit to issue the single “Intentions.” As that year came to a close, they completed a second tour of the U.S. and accompanied Rudimental in Australia.

This London pair has had hits in the clubs as well as on the charts from 2012 and beyond by combining the styles of U.K. garage, deep house, and pop. Presenting a substantial sound from the start, Gorgon City can always impress their audience with hefty bass, memorable vocals, and smooth production. Their U.K. hit "Ready for Your Love," was followed by the release of their hugely lucrative album, Sirens, which debuted in 2014. Subsequently, Gibbon and Robson Scott kept hustling with nonstop DJ gigs and collaborations with celebrities such as Chris Brown. Then, in 2018, their greatly awaited sophomore album, Escape, arrived. Gorgon City’s third album, Olympia, was released in 2021 and mixed U.K. and Chicago house elements. This particular album was created while Robson Scott resided in London and Gibbon lived in Chicago. Its songs dove into the themes of escapism and isolation. It quickly grew to be the duo's third successive album to appear at the top of the U.K. Dance chart. The single, “Start Over,” with Leia Contois and Damian Lazarus, was released in 2022.
