Overview
Lauren Flax is a DJ and producer who hails from Detroit and now lives in Brooklyn, New York. In essence, she retains the history of dance music from her hometown and the continuing innovation of her current city of residence.
Before transitioning into electronic music, Flax was playing the drums at the age of eight and began learning guitar and bass in high school. The DJing began in Detroit's now historic underground where she was a resident of the Motor Lounge along with other DJs like Mike Servito, DJ Dilemma, Jason Kendig, and Derek Plaslaiko. Her style originated in jungle territory, but soon ventured out into techno, house, and electro, building her reputation as one of the city’s most versatile selectors.
In 1999 she moved to Chicago to familiarize herself with music production before coming back to Detroit in 2000 to play the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival. Then in 2002, she once again moved to Manhattan, and it was in that year she released her first remix of "Much Finer" for Le Tigre.
For many years she continued her career as a DJ while refining her production chops, and in 2017 her original music started to truly break through with a solo EP on the infamous Nervous Records entitled U Know.
From there her production schedule became just as consistent as her gigging schedule. In 2018 alone she shared three original releases including a collaboration with fellow Brooklyn artist DJ Heather called The Acid, and a five-track EP on Dance Trax Dance Trax Vol, 16.
The following year saw another major step forward for Flax as she started touring the US and Europe with her live analog set, bringing the talent, drive, and musical sensibilities she’s gained through her hard work in the dance meccas of Detroit and Brooklyn.
