Movement Music Festival 2023
Detroit, Michigan
Overview
Held every Memorial Day weekend since 2006, Movement Music Festival celebrates electronic dance music in the birthplace of the impelling subgenre Techno. The award-winning festival is hosted annually at Hart Plaza, a legendary waterfront venue in the heart of Detroit. It’s one of the longest-running dance music events globally and also one of the most respected for staying true to the culture and community since its inception.
Movement Music Festival consistently showcases dozens of genre pioneers, underground legends, and local names across six stages, as well as many visual artists via the Artist In Residence program in collaboration with Detroit-based 1XRUN. Alongside the slew of legendary techno names that grace Hart Plaza each Memorial Day weekend, Movement hosts artists across all electronic subgenres, as well as hip-hop, funk, and rock. Notable past performers include Kraftwerk, 2 Chainz, Skream, Flying Lotus, and Wu-Tang Clan, with many returning artists like Adam Beyer and Carl Craig (the festival’s founder), as well as local legends like Danny Brown and Eddie Fowlkes.
Each stage has its own unique vibe, showcasing different sounds and atmospheres. The Detroit Stage is dedicated to local artists only, featuring legendary veterans, newcomers, and rising stars, while the Stargate Stage is also dedicated to the local community and culture. The Movement Stage is the main stage, featuring hot shots, big players, and mainstays. There are two riverside stages: the Waterfront Stage showcases an eclectic range of sounds, from funk to ghettotech, and across the water is the Pyramid Stage. Enter another realm at the Underground Stage, which is literally below Hart Plaza, giving it a warehouse party feel.
This year’s Movement Music Festival takes place May 27-29, with hundreds of thousands of expected attendees and over 100 performers. Detroit electronic staples like Carl Craig, Robert Hood, DJ Minx, Moodymann, and Stacey Pullen will be performing at Movement 2023 alongside other notable names like Green Velvet, Skrillex, John Summit, Dom Dolla, Bonobo, Three 6 Mafia, Caribou, Fisher, Kaskade, and more.
