Overview

Mateo Acosta, known professionally as Slugg, is a Miami-born DJ and producer whose foundation in 90s hip-hop and Florida’s club culture has shaped a steady rise within contemporary house music.

Raised in Miami and later based in Orlando, Slugg began exploring music production at 15. His early exposure to local electronic events, including Miami’s all-ages AMF gatherings in the early 2010s, introduced him to established figures in the city’s dance scene and solidified his interest in DJing. Not long after, he began producing his own records, initially drawing from the boom-bap structure and swing of classic hip-hop. That influence—particularly from producers such as DJ Premier and RZA—remains embedded in his rhythmic sensibility.

Over time, his sound evolved from direct hip-hop references into a more refined house framework, with tighter drum programming and considered sound selection. While bounce and groove remain central, his later work reflects restraint and a focus on long-term development rather than chasing chart trends.

A pivotal shift in Acosta’s career came with his move from Miami to Orlando. There, he became involved with the House Keepers collective after connecting with founder Austin Hammer. The affiliation led to label releases and regular appearances at House Keepers events, helping establish him as a headlining act within the regional circuit. Acosta has cited Orlando’s community as instrumental in expanding his profile and performance opportunities.

As a DJ, Slugg has built a reputation for technically layered sets that incorporate blends, effects, and acapellas to recontextualize familiar records. Notable festival appearances have included performances at Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival, EDC Orlando’s Neon Garden, and BPM Festival in Costa Rica—his first international booking. His Okeechobee set, where he drew a crowd of over 2,000 during a House Keepers takeover, marked a significant milestone in audience reach.

In addition to performing and releasing music, Acosta co-founded the label Getbusy with his partner Leo. Launched early in his career, the imprint was designed to grow alongside the Slugg project and provide a platform for both his own releases and emerging producers. The label has placed emphasis on quality control and international talent scouting, while its BUSYTOOLS series offers free edits and DJ tools aimed at supporting working DJs. Among the artists associated with the label are Nate Chapman, Gian Carlos, and Brayden Terzo.

Slugg cites a wide range of influences across house and hip-hop, including Rossi., Inland Knights, BUTCH, Jesse Perez, Phil Weeks, DJ Sneak, and GUTI. Despite touring and performing at major festivals, he has consistently pointed to intimate club settings—particularly Floyd Miami, located beneath Club Space—as his preferred environment due to its sound system and close crowd connection.

Grounded in Florida’s club tradition and shaped by hip-hop’s rhythmic foundation, Slugg continues to balance production, label leadership, and touring while maintaining strong ties to the Miami and Orlando scenes that first supported his growth.
