If you love minimal tech house as much as we do and keep track of up-and-coming artists, then the name ALISHA doesn’t go unknown. She’s been taking off for quite some time now, and her recently recorded sets at ‘Music On’ in Amsterdam have been popping off. Originating from the UK, her journey into house music began with early exposure to dance anthems from artists like Armand Van Helden and Shapeshifters, whose tracks broke the charts and radio airwaves. These early influences sparked her curiosity and led her to explore the genre further.


Her career gained significant momentum with the 2018 release of “Trip” on Green Velvet’s Relief label. This track not only earned the approval of Green Velvet himself but also led to them to perform b2b, marking a key moment in ALISHA’s career. What drew you to the house music scene initially?

I can’t remember the specific moment, but when I was just starting to go out and hearing dance anthems from Armand Van Helden and Shapeshifters, all that were in the charts and on the radio, got me intrigued by the sound before wanting to explore it further.




How did it feel to see your track “Trip” on Green Velvet’s Relief label?

It was an unreal feeling to have the first approval of Green Velvet. We played b2b together just off the cuff before I sent him music, and luckily he loved this one enough to sign. Really kickstarted my releases off for me in the best way.




What has been the most challenging aspect of your career so far?




I think trying to stand out and also defying the odds of women making music too. I worked really hard to keep learning and improving my sound, so it’s nice to have it received in a good way all over the world.




How do you approach producing a track from start to finish?




I normally start with my kick drum and some drums. Normally I pop a loop in to get my creativeness flowing before taking it out completely. It’s normally a good starting point for me before adding my signature bass chain and filling it out with synth layers and FX so the track can tell a little story.




You’ve performed at some iconic venues and festivals. Which performance has been the most memorable for you and why?




This is a tough one as I enjoy every venue and party I play and have so many amazing moments with DJing. But recently I played all night long in Manchester in a venue called The Loft. It was only 400 capacity, which we sold out very quickly, and the vibe in there from start to finish was just incredible. It’ll stick with me for a very long time.




What’s your favorite part about performing live?




Making people dance, of course! That's what we’re there to do and to play good music. I like to try and give people the moments they won’t forget with new music.






You’ve had releases on premier labels like Kaluki, Eastenderz, and Hot Creations. Which release means the most to you and why?

None in particular means ‘the most.’ Every release is special, and especially on the labels you have mentioned have been a dream for me, so to achieve all of them has been an unbelievable feeling and have all done well for me and my journey.




What’s your typical day like when you’re not performing or producing music?




The weekdays for me, not in summer, are for producing music. We always try to keep it moving and working. But on my down days, I like to just chill with friends and family, eat good food, maybe do a bit of shopping if I'm lucky and just keep fit by exercising and looking at the spas.




What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?




Be yourself, be kind. Take advice but guide it in your own way, as everyone will have an opinion but it's important to stay on track with yourself rather than what everyone else wants.




If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?




East End Dubs. We’ve played together a few times, but production-wise he has helped me guide my sound to what it is today. I think we could make something special, and we definitely will be doing this at some point!




If you weren’t a DJ, what career path do you think you would have pursued?




Probably something within fitness or football. I used to play football before giving it up for music, so I'm sure I'd still be playing it by now!

Growing up in Idaho, far from the electronic music hubs, Shay De Castro discovered her love for techno in an unusual setting. With no local scene to support her passion, she turned to online forums, diving deep into discussions and learning the ropes from afar. By her teens, De Castro had taught herself to DJ, and by 2016, she was ready to turn her strong interest into a career, despite the many hurdles along the way.




Now a rising figure in Los Angeles, De Castro’s potent sound has garnered attention from industry giants like Adam Beyer and Amelie Lens. Known for her hard-hitting, melodic-tinged techno, she has made a significant impact on the global stage. Her performances at iconic venues like Exchange LA and major festivals such as Beyond Wonderland show just how well she connects with her audience and creates top-notch techno escapades.




In our interview, De Castro reflects on a closer look into her life, how her early exposure to diverse music genres, from disco to Madonna, subtly influences her techno productions. De Castro also shares some lighter moments from her touring life, showcasing her down-to-earth personality and fondness for both music and anthropology.

Can you tell us about your journey from discovering techno to becoming a notable artist in the genre?




Sure! I actually had been listening to trance and house since I was maybe 12 or so, and I naturally discovered techno not too long after. I immediately became obsessed, spending every free moment on message boards learning and talking about it. As I was growing up in Idaho, there wasn’t really any techno scene around, so I had to resort to everything being online. I learned how to DJ a few years later, but it wasn’t until around 2016 that I started taking techno seriously (as a career). It involved a lot of ups and downs, and a lot of sacrifices, but it was necessary to move forward. 



Something that I’ve always valued is staying in my own lane, so to speak. I want to produce and play what and how I want. It’s not that I don’t care what other artists are doing, but I don’t want them to influence me in a way where I subconsciously stray from that. I think that’s helped me a lot.



What were some of the challenges you faced growing up in a city without an electronic music scene?

Just the fact that there was no clear path or reference of someone who’d done what I wanted to in my city (or state) was quite challenging. Of course, there were open format DJs, but what I aimed for was to be a touring producer/DJ like Armin or Richie Hawtin. It required me to leave to start gaining traction, as there simply weren’t any techno parties going on. To put it into perspective, my city just opened their first ever electronic music club a few months ago – shout out to Space Banana!




How did your early experiences with music influence your current sound and style?

My parents didn’t listen to electronic music at all, but I do think a lot of dance music found its way to my ears through friends and TV. La Bouche, Donna Summer – just disco in general – Kraftwerk, Kylie Minogue, Madonna, ABBA…they were all quite influential to me. As different as they are, I think their influence somehow translates well in my music.




Can you describe the moment you realized you wanted to pursue a career in techno music?




I wouldn’t say it was one specific “lightbulb” moment. I just began to fall increasingly in love with it, and the lifestyle that went along with it. I was already very much an outcast in my community, and techno gave me my first sense of belonging and community. I almost feel in a way that I owe my life to techno, for truly saving me. So, it just made sense that I’d want a career in it.




What inspires your music production process, and how do you approach creating new tracks?

Everything. Heartbreak and tension is really good for inspiration, but I’m also very much motivated by beauty – and there’s a never-ending supply if you just step right outside your door. Amidst all the turbulence and chaos in the world, its opposite always exists if you look for it.




How did you gain the support of major industry names like Adam Beyer and Amelie Lens?

I was honestly just lucky that they enjoyed my music enough to play it!




What was it like hearing your music played at iconic events like Tomorrowland and Exit Festival?

It was hard to wrap my head around at first. Then I was on Cloud 9, then I had a case of serious imposter syndrome. Then I just accepted that hey, maybe people actually like my music!




Can you share a memorable experience from one of your performances at venues like Exchange LA or Beyond Wonderland?

Both Beyond and Exchange were a ton of fun, and such milestones for me. Beyond was just really exciting because of the great production and the positive energy from everyone at the Factory 93 stage was palpable. I’m a huge architecture nerd, so I took the opportunity to walk around Exchange (a breathtaking building from the 1930s that once housed the LA stock exchange) after my set and explore the different rooms. 



I was so caught up in the experience that I didn’t realize at the end of the night I didn’t have my bag, and had to backtrack through literally every room we’d visited to hunt it down, only to realize it was hanging out in the DJ booth the whole time.




What do you think sets your sound apart from other techno artists in the industry today?




I think a ton of techno artists focus on chasing trends. There’s no judgment at all here, and I get it. But I personally find something special in staying true to a certain sound or style. I find hard-hitting, more melodic-tinged techno ranging from 128 to 133 bpm to be really impactful. You still get this nice groove and it’s very danceable with a certain darkness that sounds amazing on a big system.




How has your move to LA influenced your music and career?




It’s influenced everything positively. The majority of my music career prior to moving to LA was in Mexico, and despite being right next to LA, the scene is very different. I think LA really jumpstarted things for me with so many incredible opportunities available here. There is really something for everyone and every subgenre, which allows me to open myself up to more musical possibilities.







What advice would you give to aspiring techno artists trying to break into the scene?




Take time to figure out where your values lie – not just in your music but who you are as a person. Determine how you want to represent yourself and your art, as they are not two different entities – they’re completely intertwined. This will allow you to move in the industry with confidence and map out a path that makes sense.




How do you manage the balance between studio work and live performances?




I don’t, ha! It’s actually something I’ve recently been much better about. Once I admitted to myself that I can’t just wait for inspiration to strike and I actually have to take the studio as a job, I became more productive.




Can you talk about your experience working with iconic labels such as Factory 93, mau5trap, and Kraftek?

Each one was such a different experience, but all amazing. mau5trap in particular was pretty intimidating as I actually went in person to their offices. That was the first time I’d ever done something like that, but it was also the first time I’d felt like a “real” artist, if that makes sense. It was very humbling and inspiring.




What are some of your goals for the future, both musically and personally?




I do have very specific goals that I don’t really tell anyone, but in general, I want to continue surrounding myself with people who push me and inspire me to be the greatest version of myself in every way.




What’s one unexpected thing you’ve learned about the music industry since you started?

That you will constantly question yourself.




If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?




That’s a hard one, but all of Fleetwood Mac. Their songwriting, musical talent, ingenuity, and originality are unmatched for me.




What’s the funniest or most surprising thing that’s happened to you on tour?




One booth had their power strip right behind me, and I somehow managed to step on it and turn the booth off. Dead silence in the venue for a couple of minutes, that felt like an eternity!




If you weren’t a techno artist, what do you think you’d be doing right now?




Probably something to do with anthropology. I remember taking one of those career tests in high school and it said I would either be a museum curator or a musician, and wow, was it accurate! I love all things art history, architecture, etc. but also have a dream to swim next to blue whales, so I feel like if I could encompass all that into one career, I’d be a very happy girl.

What made you realize you wanted to invest in a full-time career in music?

The moment I realized I could make money playing music. Haha. When I started playing music, I was just doing it for fun because I liked it. Then someone proposed a show and told me the budget, and I was like, “Hold on, I will get paid?” Then I went all in, but it wasn’t easy in the beginning.




What was it like transitioning from small local parties to a residency at elrow?

I like my journey, to be honest. I started my career the old-fashioned way. I learned at home, started playing at very local bars, some restaurants here and there, and some private parties. I still remember the first time I played in front of a crowd. A friend of mine, a resident DJ there, was playing, then told me to play a track and left for a cigarette without telling me. So I found myself, nervous AF, mixing a couple of tracks. People were looking at me, and I didn’t understand why. Then I realized the music was sounding on my headphones, but not on the bar sound system. SO embarrassing. Haha.




I knew the family for some time already but I was still not used to big crowds. They decided to give me the chance anyway. The first time I played there, I didn’t sleep the night before, barely ate anything, hands shaking. Then Juan Arnau senior told me, “You play for the people, look at them, don’t think of yourself. People come here to have fun.” So I grew up and matured with that as an artist. Hence, why I’m generally uplifting and energetic. I just love seeing people going crazy at my sets.




How has growing up in Sitges, Spain influenced your music style?




People always think about Barcelona for clubbing, but in my teenage years, there were some really cool clubs in Sitges like L’Atlantida. Even up to today, there’s Pacha, which is the first Pacha built in the world. People think it’s the Ibiza club, but it was actually the Sitges one. They had super talented resident DJs like David Gausa or David Tort who were ahead musically compared to any other Barcelona resident DJ back then.




Your sets are known for being very uplifting. Where do you find most of your music?




Promos and Beatport mostly. Promos are always appreciated; they allow you to play unheard music to the audience. And I truly love to get lost digging on Beatport. I spend so many hours there. Normally I check what’s new, if I missed something. I find some track I like from some artist I don’t know, then check the artist, check the label, then probably discover another track, then a new artist here, new label there, etc. And then I end up finding gems on very random labels. Hahaha.




What was your first experience like playing at iconic clubs such as Space Ibiza?




Space was one of the music temples of the industry. I did a couple of summer seasons in Ibiza as a bartender when I was 18, so I spent more hours there than I would ever admit. Haha. I’ve seen so many good and different artists, all of them with their own style. When I had the opportunity to play there, I couldn’t believe it. I even played at their “last dance.” That was emotional.




As a resident DJ for elrow, what has been your most memorable performance and why? What is your favorite part about the brand?




February 2022, Elrow Barcelona. I will never forget that one. We came back from the pandemic, and I did the closing set at the terrace, one of the best sets I’ve ever done there. So many emotions that day. I still have goosebumps from that day. The sad thing is I didn’t know then that it would be the last time elrow opened that club, which in part makes it more special for me. That club was magic.




2024 has been a busy year for you. Which event or festival stands out the most and why?




Tough question. So many to choose from! I will debut at Kappa Futur Festival in July; Italy always treats me well. Space Miami is always very, very special. ANTS in Ushuaia Ibiza is always nice, and their team is lovely. Of course, elrow with the family is always top tier. New York feels like a second home; I have so many friends there, and I always feel very welcome. I will soon do my first headline event there, so that’s probably one of my 2024 highlights.




You’ve had releases on notable labels. Which release are you most proud of and why?




All of them make me very proud for some reason or another. They’re my babies. The first releases because they were the first ones, then the ones in the middle because I was able to do it alone. Now I’m working with studio engineers, so the tracks have better sound and better arrangements. Everything is part of me in some way, so I’m proud of all of them.




Can you share a bit about your upcoming projects and what fans can expect from you next?




I have a couple of releases scheduled in the next few months, one on AETERNA, Meduza’s label, and one at FACTORY93 from Insomniac. After a couple of more techno-oriented releases, I wanted to focus again on tech house so people don’t get confused. Haha. Obviously, I’m working on new stuff, but these are the closest projects to see the light.




Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound?




I don’t really think I have just one influence. I think I’m influenced in so many ways. In the very beginning, I was very influenced by Luciano and Sven Vath (I spent so many hours at Cocoon in Ibiza). But right now, I couldn’t say any main one. If you listen to my sets, I can play music from so many different labels and artists, from house to tech house and a bit of techno. When I’m listening to promos or digging on Beatport, I just go through music. I spend many hours and I love ending up on some random labels. I don’t care who made the track, if the label is more or less underground, if it’s tech house or techno. If I like it, I get it and I play it. End of story.




How do you prepare for a big show or festival? Any rituals or routines?




I don’t have any rituals or particular routines, to be honest. As I said before, I spend so many hours looking for music, so I’m well prepared. What I can’t avoid is getting very nervous before I play. I barely eat, my stomach hurts, etc.




If you could collaborate with any artist in the world, who would it be and why?




Sade. She’s by far my favorite artist in the world. People around me are VERY tired of Sade. I have no idea how that collaboration would end up because we’re totally different, but I guess that’s the beauty of music—you never know what can happen.




What has been the funniest or most unexpected thing to happen during one of your sets?




Not sure if it’s the funniest, but terrifying for sure. I was playing at a ski festival in Europe. It was very cold and windy, which means double cold. Suddenly all CDJs stopped working except one. I had a heart attack at that moment. But the funny thing is, two days before, I saw a random video on Instagram of a dude explaining how to mix with one CDJ. So after collapsing for one minute, I made it through while the sound engineers changed the rest of the equipment. The longest five minutes of my life. Hahaha.




If you weren’t a DJ, what do you think you would be doing right now?



Helicopter pilot. 100%. Always wanted to be one.




What is your favorite spot to eat in Ibiza?




FISH SHACK. Not sure if it’s my favorite, but one of them for sure. I just love going there—good food, beautiful sunsets. LA DOLCE VITE in Platja d’en Bossa is an Italian restaurant. The food is great, not expensive, the team working there is crazy, and they let us do (almost) whatever we want. Hahaha.




Can you share an interesting fact about yourself that your fans might not know?




Besides my DJ career, I have an NGO with a couple of friends that rescue street or abandoned dogs and try to find a new home for them. It’s very tough, emotionally and sometimes physically, especially because you can’t save them all. Last year we managed to save around 500 dogs. It’s something I’m very proud of.

From Sitges to Stardom: A Chat with Tini Gessler

With the Beonix Festival creeping up quickly, we sat down with the A&R Director of the festival, Andrej Buhonov, to delve into his journey from promoter to festival organizer, and to get an insider’s view on what makes Beonix so unique. He shared insights into the evolving electronic music scene in Cyprus, the challenges of organizing a high-production festival on a small island, and the exciting developments for the 2024 edition of Beonix.




What made you want to become a promoter in the first place rather than a DJ?

I started as a promoter when I finished school, organizing parties for my friends. Later, during my time at university, I started running campus parties to earn a bit of extra money to pay for my studies. I don’t think I’m destined to be a musician; I enjoy organizing parties much more!




What is the local Cyprus scene like? What sounds are popular? What makes it unique?

Cyprus’s local scene is pretty small, with every town having its own ‘most popular’ sound. For example, Nicosia is pretty popular with Techno, whereas Limassol loves Afro House and Melodic Techno.




It’s difficult to say that something is unique, but I think Cyprus is the only country in Europe where the scene is only just starting up now or has only started up in the past few years. So it’s fantastic to see how all of these small collectives are growing.




What are the biggest challenges of putting on this event each year?

There are a lot of challenges, one of them being that BEONIX is still a pretty young festival, with 2024 being only our third edition.




However, I believe that one of our biggest challenges is our technical team. Cyprus is a small country and an island—in Düsseldorf, for example, there are 25 sound and lighting rental companies, whereas in Cyprus, there are only about 4-5. So we’re quite limited in what we can do and source on the island, which can create a lot of difficulty when trying to set up a high-production event.




It can also be tricky to find a good lineup balance between “ticket-seller acts” as well as fresh and young artists with a good attitude and unique sound.




What's new or evolved for 2024, and how has the festival generally had to evolve and adapt since it launched?

Our biggest change was last year when we moved from Larnaca to Limassol. Our fantastic venue ETKO will be our home for the next few years.




However, we’ve been evolving year by year in all aspects of the festival. Our designers have been creating new props, art, and other visual elements, and our technical and visual team have been improving the light and sound design to push boundaries from previous editions.




This year, we’re also adding a new stage just for young local artists. In my mind, it is so important that more 18-25 year olds get a chance to showcase their sound on a big festival stage.




What informs the lineup this year? How do you approach choosing which artists to book? Is it more about selling tickets, appealing to fans, or showcasing your own taste?

As mentioned before, for my team, the most difficult part is to find a good balance in the lineup between “ticket-seller acts” as well as a mix of fresh and young artists with a good attitude and unique sound. I think this year, we have a great variety of bands, live acts, and DJs across the Afro House and Hard Techno spectrum.




Tell us about some of the production at BEONIX—the size of the screens, the number of lights, the power of the sound system, etc.

I don’t know the exact numbers, but it is massive.




How important is it to work with local artists, promoters, production crews, and DJs when putting on this event?

Inviting local artists/DJs, promoters, and production crews is so important to us. This year our festival guests can join over 20 established local artists and 15 young talents. We also work with local clubs and promoter crews to collaborate and grow step by step.




What tips have you got for anyone coming for the first time?

Stay for a few days more and try to enjoy not only our festival but also the island.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at BEONIX with A&R Director Andrej Buhonov

San Francisco-based producer and Spencer Brown draws profound inspiration from his experiences at Burning Man, a festival known for its unique blend of community, self-expression, and radical inclusivity. For Spencer, Burning Man is not just an event but a touchstone that reinforces his artistic philosophy and approach to life.

In an Instagram post, Spencer Brown says "Burning Man is my favorite place on Earth. For me, it’s a yearly spiritual reset and inspiration harvest. I enter with an open mind to grow to become a better human and musician." 



The festival's environment, often misrepresented in the media, offers Spencer a space for authentic connection and community building. He finds that the challenges faced at Burning Man, such as unpredictable weather and the need for self-reliance, foster moments of camaraderie and support that are hard to find elsewhere. This spirit of unity and resilience aligns closely with Spencer's own values and principles.



Spencer distills his artistic philosophy into four guiding principles, drawing from the ethos of Burning Man. The first principle is to "be kind to everyone around you," a reflection of the supportive and inclusive community he experiences at the festival. This principle emphasizes the importance of kindness and mutual respect in all interactions, both personal and professional.



His second principle is to "make music from the heart," which means creating art based on personal passion rather than following trends. Spencer believes in the power of genuine expression and staying true to one's artistic vision. "You make music that you want to make — no exceptions," he explains, underscoring the importance of authenticity in his work.

Spencer's third principle extends this approach to his DJ sets, where he insists on playing only the music he truly loves. This ensures that every performance is a genuine reflection of his tastes and values, creating an authentic experience for his audience. His fourth principle addresses the challenge of content creation in the digital age. Spencer advocates for posting content that aligns with his values, rejecting superficiality and maintaining authenticity in all his online interactions. "Anything I put online needs to be aligned with my values, and it needs to be authentic," he asserts.



Throughout his career, authenticity has been Spencer's guiding star. He often takes unconventional paths, such as releasing his first two albums as continuous mixes against industry advice and debuting his record label, Diviine, with an 18-minute synth jam session titled "18-minute loop." His thoughtful social media posts, which stand in contrast to the short-form video content favored by many of his peers, further illustrate his commitment to genuine expression.

The Burning Man Influence on Spencer Brown

Cristina Lazic, a bright and accomplished DJ and producer, has been on the come up in the industry with her unique take on stripped-back house music. Born in Italy, raised in London, and now based in Milan, Cristina’s journey is as eclectic as her sound. With performances at iconic venues like Hï Ibiza and Koko, and releases on renowned labels such as Crosstown Rebels and Moxy Muzik, Cristina’s mastery continues to grow.




Her love for music was ignited during her teenage years, fueled by dance music and the futuristic Italo disco scene. However, it was her move to London at 18 that solidified her drive for electronic music. The city's minimal scene and clubs like Fabric London became her playground, influencing her ear for sound.




In an unexpected twist, motherhood became the catalyst for Cristina’s professional music career. During maternity leave, she took a DJ course and soon decided to pursue her lifelong dream, which had taken a backseat to a business career. Her enthusiasm and talent quickly led to big-time gigs, including memorable debuts at Hi Ibiza and performances at Exit, Get Lost, Unum, and many more.




Cristina’s latest venture, the “La Zic” project, is a music platform that will include a record label, mentoring program, events, and apparel, focusing on inclusivity and gender equality in the industry. Her dedication to mentoring and helping others is evident, as she aims to empower upcoming artists with both technical and marketing skills through MentorZic.




Balancing multiple roles as a DJ, producer, label owner, and mentor, Cristina credits meticulous planning and time management—skills she honed during her days at Google. Her approach to music is deeply personal, combining grooves and melodies shaped by her tasteful musical background.




How did your upbringing in London and your Italian roots influence your music style?

Living in London definitely shaped my musical taste. I moved to London when I was 18 and grew up raving in East London, following the minimal scene of the 2000s, which strongly influenced me. I remember going to venues like Fabric London to listen to Ricardo Villalobos, Gabriel Ananda, or Laurent Garnier. I have also seen the rise of more recent labels and brands like Fuse London and Solid Grooves, which have been, and still are, among my favorite musical references in the underground scene. Before moving to London, during my teenage years, I fell in love with dance music and the Italo disco sonorities, which definitely helped me get closer to the underground minimal scene when I moved to the UK.




What was the turning point that led you to pursue a career in music?

Curiously enough, it was my maternity leave. Eight years ago, I was on maternity leave, my daughter Sofia was six months old, and I wanted to find a hobby because I had no nannies and was busy all day with milk, diapers, and so on. Needing a hobby, a friend, who by chance is called Mina Lazic and is close to my husband, wrote to me one day and asked: Cristina, would you like to take a DJ course with me? This was intriguing, given that I have always loved electronic music and the world of DJing. I thought this was the right opportunity to start. From there, I decided to continue this path, as music had always been my dream, but I had abandoned it after high school to pursue a typical business career.




Can you share the story behind your first major gig at a renowned club or festival?

I had my debut at Hi Ibiza in the summer of 2022. The way it all started was quite original, as Damian Lazarus approached me to play after I sent him several tracks which he released. He did that by asking me to schedule a call on Zoom, which I found very interesting! At the gig, several of my best friends, and of course my husband, attended. The gigs went super well, and I was very satisfied. 



The funny thing is that the day after, we had the end-of-year ballet show of my daughter to attend, which we obviously could not miss. For this reason, we traveled straight from the club to Milan and went straight to the show. It was quite brutal, but this is what being a mother and a DJ implies!




How did you develop your unique take on stripped-back house music?

I have always been passionate about music since I was a kid. I grew up learning how to play the piano with my grandmother, who was a piano teacher. During my teenage years, I was very much influenced by the Britpop/rock wave made up of bands like R.E.M, Oasis, Blur, and Travis. My father also passed on a strong passion for rock music, mostly from the '60s and '70s. 



I then moved to London at 18, and this is where electronic music became a strong part of my life. My house music has a combined element of all of these influences: it’s clearly on the minimal/deep front, but it has a melodic aspect coming from the music I have listened to and played when I was younger. Guitar riffs are always present, as a result of the influence from rock music.




What inspired you to start the "La Zic" project, and what can we expect from it in 2024?

La Zic means “the music” (la musique = la zic) in French slang, and it’s spelled exactly like my DJ name, which is the surname of my husband, who is Serbian. When I left Google a year ago, I knew I wanted to start something entrepreneurial. Clearly, a record label would be the right next step in my music career, but I also noticed there was a gap in the industry: artists are mainly focusing on developing technical skills, and then they tend to overlook the marketing side of things and how to promote themselves. This could work in an old paradigm where a few big players (record labels, etc.) would take care of the marketing, but nowadays most artists self-release their music, and I think every artist should know how to brand themselves. 



That’s why I also launched MentorZic, which started off as a one-on-one mentoring service to help DJs gain marketing skills, and it’s now getting a more solid structure, becoming an academy for DJs and producers, with a course, workshops, and coaching. In 2024, La Zic will continue to release music with the mission to bring inclusivity and gender equality in minimal (there are not that many female producers!), as well as establishing loads of collaborations to train artists on marketing and branding skills.




How do you balance your roles as a DJ, producer, label owner, and mentor?

I like to plan my days, weeks, and months and reserve slots for any tasks I need to complete. I make strong use of Google Calendar; I guess this is a bit of professional deformation that I have inherited from the Google days, but it really helps to set out a list of things to do and then allocate enough time to get them completed within a certain timeframe. Obviously, I am a mother, so life is a bit chaotic in reality, but having a structure of what I want to achieve and by when is immensely helpful. Goal planning and time management are also skills that I teach my MentorZic students.




Which of your released tracks holds the most personal significance to you, and why?

I think "Mirror" is one of the tracks that has meant the most to me in my career. I co-wrote it with Shar, a female singer whom I met thanks to shesaid.so and who has now become a friend. In the track, we wanted to explore the theme of self-reflection (hence the name “Mirror”) and how women can feel empowered by moving on from uncomfortable situations. I even made a set opener version of it to kick off my sets.




How has the international radio support from stations like BBC Radio 1 and Ibiza Global impacted your career?

Radio is clearly an important factor in the growth of an artist. I was invited to join Crosstown Rebels for a BBC Radio 1 show by Damian Lazarus and have recorded mixes at a variety of radios like Ibiza Global, Sonica, and Pure. I believe that doing radio shows does not show an immediate impact, but if you do several of them over time and communicate them properly, then it can help boost your reputation and also lead to bookings. 



For example, one of my mixes on Global was posted on Global’s SoundCloud; some guys in Montreal heard it and fell in love with some of my productions included in the mix. They ended up booking me, and in a few days, I’ll make my way back to Montreal for the third time.




How has your experience with shesaid.so influenced your approach to supporting women and mothers in music?

I have been a friend of Andreea Magdalina for a long time; she is a visionary person whom I respect very much. With Andreea, we collaborated on a variety of topics, from mentoring other women to leading the parenthood committee at shesaid.so. These kinds of activities and events are important—they can build community, make us women feel less lonely, offer support, and also provide a platform for meeting other individuals, like Shar, who has become one of my strongest partners in my tracks, as well as a friend.




Can you describe a particularly memorable moment from one of your performances?

I think that a memorable moment is from a recent gig for my La Zic showcase in Milan. Before the party started, I proudly sent some pictures and videos of the venue to my mother and told her I would have loved for her to be there. A couple of hours later, when the club was full, I randomly saw my mother on the dance floor! She came to support me; I immediately went to find her and brought her to the booth with me. That was really epic.




What do you find most rewarding about mentoring upcoming artists?

I genuinely love seeing other people grow and feel accomplished with what they achieve. This is what I love about mentoring: I love to see people feel empowered, and I also love to create a human connection with them and build new relationships and friendships.




What do you hope listeners take away from your music?

That it’s music made with my soul, combining two elements: the groove and the dream.




Who are your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound?

Laurent Garnier, Ricardo Villalobos, and Enzo Siragusa are all DJs and producers that have shaped my sound and defined my striving for good quality in music. More underground, usually Romanian artists like Mihai Popoviciu and NTFO, Traumer and Kolter are strong influences in what makes a track groovy and dreamy. More in general, chill-out artists like Morcheeba, songwriters like Franco Battiato, and rock artists like R.E.M, Oasis, and the Britpop wave have all influenced me in the melodic or lyrical aspect of my music.




What upcoming projects or collaborations are you most excited about?

I still can't believe it, but I have had the honor to remix John Digweed! My remix for Santiago by Bedrock, the duo made by John and Nick Muir, is releasing on July 5th—this is definitely very exciting for me!




How do you approach creating a setlist for a live performance?

I look for music on Beatport, Bandcamp, and from the submissions I get via Trackstack. I am also quite obsessive about looking for gems on Soundcloud mixes, reading all the comments until I find that ID. I then tidy the music into folders, import it on Rekordbox, and try to build playlists that will fit the moods of the various gigs. I usually improvise during performances, but having a playlist with music selected to ensure the right mood normally helps me.




What's the most unexpected place you've found inspiration for your music?

I know it may sound odd, but I also got inspired to write music at the office. In between meetings, when I was still working in the office, I often had ideas of melodies that I used to record on my phone. I also got some ideas for potential track titles, which then turned into actual tracks of mine, such as “9 to 5” (referring to working hours), “Plan B” (referring to my plan B of doing music), and “You are on mute” (a title coming from the sentence often heard during remote calls via Google Meet).




If you could perform at any venue or festival in the world, where would it be and why?

Sunwaves was definitely a milestone for me, which I have achieved this year. Now that I have moved back to London, I have the objective of playing at some parties in the UK. My favorite artist is Enzo Siragusa, so I am aiming for a Fuse Open Air slot eventually!




What's a fun fact about you that your fans might not know?

I am absolutely terrified of lightning. I am scared I am going to be struck by lightning, so whenever I hear a storm coming, I tend to go indoors and won’t leave until the thunderstorm is gone.




Which city has the best food in the world?

Rome! Puntarelle, Cacio e Pepe, Carbonara... You name it!

Stripped-Back Sounds: The Life and Times of Cristina Lazic

Made in Oakland and now residing in Los Angeles, Jackie Hollander has been on the come up in the exciting world of house music. Growing up in Oakland, Hollander was immersed in rich musical surroundings , attending concerts and raves that would lay the foundation for her future career. Her early experiences, from a memorable encounter with G-Eazy at a Drake concert to her father's enthusiastic support for rap concerts, shaped her music palette, and added flavor to her good taste in sound.




Jackie's self-taught DJ skills, honed during high school house parties and a pivotal summer camp, set the stage for her entry into the scene during her university years in Los Angeles. Unlike her peers who frequented frat parties, Jackie and her friends were drawn to every house music club and rave in the city, cultivating a deep rooted love for the genre.




Her dedication paid off, leading to releases on prominent labels such as Realm Records, There Is A Light, Nervous Records, and Street Tracks. Jackie's journey from playing local gigs to opening for industry giants like Gorgon City, Max Styler, Justin Martin, and many more at massive venues like the Bill Graham Auditorium, Exchange LA, The Midway, and others.




In this interview, Jackie shares insights into her musical influences, the challenges she's faced in a male-dominated industry, and the memorable moments that have defined her career. From her preparation rituals to the funniest encounters during her sets, Jackie's story is both inspiring and relatable. How did growing up in San Francisco influence your musical style and career?




I grew up in Oakland, and it definitely had a huge impact on my career. The music scene here is so strong and diverse. I grew up going to concerts and then started going to raves in high school. I went to see Drake once with my dad (yes, my dad—he loved taking me to rap concerts), and G-Eazy was just walking around in the crowd. I remember going up to him to take a picture and introduce myself. At the time, he only had one song out, and very shortly after, he took off. That was an inspiration to me that a local person could reach a mass audience very quickly.




Since a young age, I have always been obsessed with music. I would do weekly Spotify searches since I can remember, lying in bed and spending hours looking for new music. I grew up listening to rap and '70s/'80s rock, which I think is where my love for darker and emotional music comes from. Music has always been my escape and the place I go to feel all my emotions. Growing up in the East Bay, it is in our culture to push boundaries and live on the edge, so I definitely think that is why I went after my dreams and know that good things don’t always come easy.




What sparked your passion for music during your university years in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles is where my love for music turned into my love for dance music specifically. My friends and I would go to every single concert at The Shrine, every tasteful house music club in LA like Rasputin, and random music festivals like Nocturnal Wonderland, etc. We were obsessed. Everyone else in our grade would be going to frat parties, and my friends and I were the group that was always at some sort of rave. It was awesome.



At some point during my sophomore year, I started thinking I really wanted to do this. I learned how to DJ at a summer camp when I was very young. I also DJed in high school with my sister when we would throw house parties. I had some background experience, but it all seemed very daunting, especially because everyone at USC wanted to be in the music industry. Everyone was obsessed with DJing/house music/you name it. The biggest issue was that everyone doing it was a guy.



I had no role model to approach or turn to. I was one of the first females at USC to pick up DJing and really go after it. It was so uncomfortable and scary, but I am very grateful for all those early challenges because this industry is not easy, and it has made me very strong.




What was the journey like from being a self-taught DJ to playing at major events?




The journey has been long but wonderful. Once I got to a place with DJing and playing shows, I didn’t want to be the opener anymore; I wanted to be the main act. I wanted to play my own music and connect with my listeners. There have been so many nights where I would stay in instead of going to parties and literally teach myself music production off of YouTube. Music production is very hard to learn, but once you get it, you are off to the races. It has been incredible to form my sound and really find myself through this process. 



I have never spent so much time on something in my life. I truly spend hours and hours in my room on my computer making music! I know it is only the beginning of that commitment, and I am so okay with that. I love it so much. I am at the point where I dream about song ideas. It's pretty crazy!




I do want to note that this jump from making music to playing these events would not have been possible without the support from my manager Simon, my family, and my roommate and best friend Riley. It takes so much support and love to believe in yourself and make everything come together.




How did it feel to open for industry giants like Gorgon City?




I am so grateful for Gorgon City. Matt and Kye have truly helped me in so many ways. First, they are the most authentic and real artists I have met in this industry. I remember the first time we met; they genuinely wanted to get to know me and were so warm and welcoming. I feel so lucky to have found Palm Artists and be on their roster with people like Matt and Kye. It was truly surreal to open for them as they are one of my biggest musical inspirations, and I can’t wait to play many upcoming shows with them—to be announced!!




How do you prepare for your live performances? Do you have any pre-show rituals?




I always get a workout in or some kind of walk. I have to move my body and fit in my morning routine whenever possible. But most importantly, before every show, I have everyone I am with join hands and close our eyes, and I say a prayer to the universe for how grateful I am for the opportunity and that everything goes smoothly. Lastly, after the prayer, I always go into the bathroom alone, look into the mirror, and hype myself up. Both rituals are very important and special to me, and I truly think they get me in the right mindset.




What has been the most challenging part of your career so far, and how did you overcome it?




So far, it has been at USC and being the only girl DJing and making music. A lot of people didn’t take me seriously and didn’t support me. People would talk badly about me behind my back and put me down. It was super hard to push through that and continue to teach myself music production and play shows. A lot of my friends wouldn't come to my shows or publicly support me, and that was really hard. I wouldn’t take it back, though, because I learned how to get through that and only compete with myself to go after my dreams and always show up as my best self. 



It is no secret that this industry is male-dominated, and because of my early experiences facing that, it doesn’t intimidate me. It motivates me. I want to be known because of my performances and my music. I want people to judge me or love me based on that—never because I am a girl.




Who are your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound?




My biggest musical influences will always be Gorgon City, Fred Again, Eli Brown, and John Summit. Gorgon City because they are the legends that they are and have had such an incredible and strong career. Their music is always evolving and changing, yet it stays true to their sound and is always amazing. Fred Again because he wasn’t afraid to be different and is such a genuine soul. Eli Brown because he is really shaping the future of techno. Lastly, John Summit because he always went after it and has such a strong work ethic and has built a very genuine and authentic brand. He is helping dance music reach new heights, and it has been incredible to watch his whole career unfold.



What has been your most memorable performance to date and why?




Probably my Superior Ingredients set with Max Styler in New York. I absolutely love doing shows with Max; he has been such a huge supporter for me, and I think the energy we build together during our shows is incredible. He has always had my back, and I am so appreciative. The crowd in NY that day was just incredible, the energy was unmatched, and the wine was flowing. I got to test so many new demos I had just finished, and they were all received so well. I will always remember that set.



What’s the funniest or most unexpected thing that has happened during one of your sets?



This man wrote on his phone, “What is your ring size?” Haha, I will always remember that. I could not stop laughing.


What’s a fun fact about you that your fans might not know?

I am very free-spirited and funny. I don’t take life too seriously. I love to seize the day. If you want to get up at 4 a.m. to see the sunrise, I will be there with you.



If you weren’t a DJ and producer, what career path do you think you would have pursued?



I would have opened my own hotel/event company. One day, I want to start my own label and throw events. I am super into health/wellness/spirituality and food, so I want to tailor my events to those interests and create a completely new experience in the space.
