In our City Beats series, we explore underground scenes in cities worldwide. This week, we’re spotlighting Bogotá, Colombia, and its thriving drum and bass scene.




Colombia’s capital city is home to 8 million people—and it seems as though about half of them are involved in the drum and bass scene. Bogotá’s D&B underground is thriving, with festivals like RE.SET, Radikal Styles, and 420 Bogotá laying the foundation for new artists to flourish and international artists to let loose.




Collectives and sound systems like Autonotek, Liquid Mood, Womandbass, and Bogotrax have built thriving communities, and put Colombia firmly at the forefront of Latin America’s electronic underground.




From Europe to Latin America




Colombia’s D&B scene started as an offshoot of Europe’s. Back in the ‘90s, when the genre was setting Europe’s underground alight, a crew of disillusioned French ravers relocated to Colombia. They were sick of the heavy policing of free parties in Europe and the routine suppression of rave culture. So they brought the scene to Colombia, introducing their breakneck beats, wild parties, inclusive community, and innovative approaches through free raves on the outskirts of Medellín and Bogotá.




“These French guys brought their vinyl, their music, and started to make the free parties,” says BRAIN, a D&B producer from Bogotá. “It was very special, because it was really underground, really DIY, really alternative and deviant from society.”




Bogotá’s D&B Revolution




If that planted the seed, then it fully blossomed when Jairo Vargas co-founded RE.SET, Bogotá’s longest-running drum & bass event and label. Vargas grew up between Colombia and the U.S., where he soaked up NYC’s house and techno scenes.




It was the late ‘90s, and Vargas was determined to bring the culture back to his home city. Back then, records were hard to come by, and he returned to Bogotá with an extensive collection. That led to the founding of Phono Lab in Bogotá’s Zona Rosa neighborhood, a record store that soon became an influential electronic music hub. For over a decade, they supported the local scene while connecting communities through music and events.




Phono’s events soon expanded from the more popular sound of techno to the more underground Drum & Bass. “Drum and bass didn’t fit in with the style of Techsound, but we knew the city wanted it. So myself and DJ Sebass, who is now known as Colombia’s drum & bass Godfather, set up RE.SET,” said Vargas in a 2019 interview with Bandcamp. “There were a few nights here for the sound, but no one was doing it seriously, with professional production and international acts.”




Local Talent, Global Reach, and Community Impact




The first major RE.SET event was in 2006, but they’d been testing the waters with smaller D&B events. The first European artists to travel to Bogotá to play a D&B event were Silver (from UK trio North Base), and Drumsound. They were blown away by the crowd’s wild energy, lack of self-consciousness, and gratitude. Since then, that energy has spread like wildfire, with D&B events in Bogotá every single weekend and a flourishing scene of homegrown talent.




That includes artists, collectives, club nights, and sound systems such as SINTESIS, Zipaquirá!, Stxp UP Soundsystem, La Modular, Phonologia, Exophono, Silentzcorp, Inbassion and many more.




The womanandbass collective are championing women in the scene, and D&B artists from across the globe are itching to play some of the city’s underground festivals. Artists like DJ Sebass, Vargas, and BRAIN are teaching Bogotá’s youth how to DJ and produce, and every time a DJ comes from abroad they ask them to create a masterclass to give back to the community. “That’s my engine that keeps me moving,” says BRAIN. “There are many people with way more talent than me in Colombia, but they don't have the opportunities, so I'm opening the doors for those people.”

City Beats: Bogotá

Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi Racecourse recently pulsed with raw energy as Lollapalooza unfolded its sonic spectrum: electronic dance music, rock, and hip-hop rippled across stages. On the main dance music stage, Grammy winner Zedd drew thousands into ecstatic sync. But for the purists—those quiet rebels chasing authenticity—the true pilgrimage led to DJ Anushka. Her set is a hypnotic collision of electro jolts and restless grooves, delivered with surgical precision that leaves its imprint long after the last bassline fades. In a landscape often driven by formula, Anushka is something else entirely. Her defiance isn’t loud, but it’s deep—and it comes from somewhere. A quiet storm shaped by cities, silence, and sound.



Anushka Nadia Menon’s sound is rooted in many places, none of them accidental. Raised in Muscat, she absorbed the intricate pulses of Middle Eastern rhythm. In Melbourne, the 90s hip-hop grit and the ache of R&B left their imprint. But it was India’s shadowy electronic music underground that truly lit the fuse. There, in the warehouses and half-lit basements of India’s sonic underbelly, Anushka didn’t just find sound—she found purpose. But music wasn’t her first rebellion.



Before music stepped forward and claimed her, Anushka had already reshaped another world. As one of India’s most sought-after fashion photographers, she was shooting for Apple, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, GQ, and Rolex before her twenties had time to settle. But her photos were never just beautiful; they were images with weight—subversive, cinematic, and intensely engaged with the tension between surface and truth. Her aesthetic is unapologetic. And still, beneath the applause, something was brewing louder than the shutter. A hum, a tremor. Music, rising like a secret she could no longer keep.



In 2015, she teamed up with her friend Smita as Anushka + Agent, spinning SupaFly nights drenched in 90s hip-hop and R&B. By 2017, she stepped out solo, diving headfirst into darker waters: electro, drum and bass, and breakbeats with teeth. Her 2019 debut single "Falling," a collaboration with Sid Vashi, was all silk and steel: soft vocals over crisp percussion. Then came "Karma," which was a bit harder, and "Take," a drum-and-bass missile about online chatter that is becoming increasingly toxic by the day. Each track dug deeper—part protest, part seduction, all edge.



Onstage, she’s a force to be reckoned with—pure voltage in motion. Whether she’s commanding Burning Man’s dust-streaked expanse, Magnetic Fields’ sun-scorched forts, or Boiler Room India’s sweat-soaked floors, her sets erupt with precision and purpose. Drum and bass collides with disco’s neon shimmer, electro snarls melt into the deep, rolling pulse of house, and progressive peaks crash down like waves. Every transition lands with impact. Every drop feels earned. With razor-sharp control and a rebel’s instinct, she somehow manages to transform every musical gig into a seismic ritual.



Her inspirations are as layered as her sound. Vocally, she draws from the ethereal grit of FKA Twigs, the smoky intimacy of Sabrina Claudio, and the anthemic power of Florence + the Machine. Behind the decks, it’s Gwen Stefani’s fierce playfulness, Cameo Blush’s bright cuts, and 8 Bit Culprit’s retro-modern magic. She surfs genres with ease: disco, house, electro, drum and bass—all laced with a 90s rave undercurrent, always filtered through her own raw lens.



Now based in Goa—the global epicenter of the psychedelic trance music scene—she finds herself deep inside a new sonic current where classic psytrance, techno, and electro are converging into something sharper, more sensual, and brimming with raw energy. She hints that her next musical chapter might tap into this psychedelic bloodstream. “The scene here is mutating in real time,” she says. “It’s still wild, but more seductive now. There's heat in it.”



She is also currently working on two club bangers with producers Ox7gen and Oceantied and has three new singles in the pipeline, each aiming to stitch pop’s addictive hooks into the darker cloth of underground sounds. “There’s a wave building,” she says. “It’s fresh. It’s awake.” She isn’t just surfing that wave; she’s shaping it.



To call Anushka a DJ is to miss the point. Her entire journey across fashion photography and music is a blueprint of creative resistance. Her art has always broken rules. First, her photography disrupted the fashion world; now, her beats are shattering old ideas of sound. Just like her photographs, her music grabs your attention and doesn’t let go, crafting immersive worlds you can feel. India’s cultural zeitgeist craves something raw and unapologetic, and Anushka is answering the call. She’s not just a DJ—she’s a rebel leader with a mixer, turning beats into a battle cry for India’s new generation—a generation that refuses to be tamed.

In our Ones To Watch series, we spotlight exciting new producers who are shaking up the game and progressing dance music culture while they do it.




Small Crab is a Frankfurt-born, Dublin-based producer making left-field bass music and experimental techno. Since her debut release in 2021, she’s been making huge waves thanks to her playful and compelling DJ sets and relentless pursuit of hard-hitting bass bangers designed to tear the dance floor up.




She’s made a big impact in a short while with releases on Scuffed Recordings, Left, Right & Centre, and Early Reflex. Her mix for Daisychain was named RA’s Mix of the Day in 2024, and not long after that she was featured as one of Mixmag’s Artists to Watch in 2025. She’s a regular on the Dublin club circuit, supported Mall Grab, Sputnik One, Hassan Abou Alam and Jay Carder, and has a slot lined up at Dancing Family Festival this July. Today, we’ll take a closer look at Small Crab’s journey so far, key releases and what she has lined up for the future.




From Frankfurt to the Floor




Real name Anastasia, Small Crab’s early exposure to music came from analog rather than electronic music. She learned violin as a kid and started playing drums as a teen, specifically. That became a long-term passion, and she played in several rock and funk bands and went on to study percussion at college in Dublin. “That was my first influence,” she says. “I wanted to be a rock artist.”




Then a friend introduced her to Ableton, and she dove in head-first, watching YouTube tutorials late into the night. Unsurprisingly, she was drawn to percussive sounds and earth-shattering bass, which led her deep into Dublin’s underground. “That’s when I started to get a real interest in the club scene and electronic music and wanting to DJ,” she says.




Anastasia attended a lot of club nights at venues that are now closed in Dublin, like Wigwam, Button Factory, and D8. “Now a lot of the clubs have closed down and collectives don't put parties on because they’ve moved on to something else,” she says.




Finding Her Groove




For Small Crab, producing music came before DJing, and still does. “My first love is making my own music with Ableton,” she says. “I very quickly became interested in rhythmic patterns, and that’s where I found the music I like, and I’ve stuck to it for the last five years.”




Anastasia says one of the main reasons she was able to start learning production was because her music college provided Ableton and LogicPro for free. Then the pandemic hit, and she was trapped at home with nothing to do except learn the ropes.




From Mall Grab to Small Crab




Small Crab’s name is a spin-off from one of her favorite artists. “I was listening to Mall Grab a lot and I loved him, and my sister said “You aren’t Mall Grab, you’re Small Crab because my star sign is cancer,” Anastasia laughs. “And when I started uploading music to SoundCloud, it just stuck.”




And not long ago, she opened for Mall Grab in Dublin. “The producers knew I was a massive fan and put me on the line-up,” she says. “I was so nervous when I met him, he said I must be the infamous Small Crab.”




Other influences include but are not limited to: Sputnik One, Glimmerman, Sim, Laksa, re:ni and many others. “I always used to listen to Rhyw’s tracks as a reference,” she says. “He’s an amazing producer, literally one of my favorites.”




Breakout Releases




Small Crab’s debut solo EP came out on Flowing With Honey on Paryìa in 2022, a four-track percussive extravaganza steeped in hypnotic rhythms that tread the line between techno, drum ’n’ bass, and experimental. She followed it up on Left, Right & Centre in 2023 with Glucosides / AYY + Tokyo, two tracks packed full of left-field techno and breaks with bass designed to destroy sound systems. But the EP that garnered global attention came in the form of her debut on Scuffed Recordings in 2024. Batomu is the sound of an artist in her stride and won the attention of Mixmag in their "Spotlight" series and "Top 25 Artists to Watch" lists.




Looking to the Future




Anastasia is a founding member of Skin&Blister, a community providing a platform to educate, inspire, and showcase aspiring women and non-binary DJs, producers, and behind-the-scenes roles, and has a lot more releases up her sleeve, including an EP on First Second Label.




And after working hard to hone her sound, Small Crab’s now playing gigs with some of her all-time favorite artists. “I’m playing a gig with Hassan About Alam in France on Friday,” she says. “I feel like these moments just mean a lot, because I’ve worked towards getting better and getting better, and now the people that inspired me know I exist, and that’s just so cool.”

Ones To Watch: Small Crab

Victor Cester, better known as CHESSTER, has quietly built a career that spans continents and dance floors without relying on flash or gimmicks. Born and raised in Venice, Italy, his early exposure to electronic music in the 2000s shaped a path that would eventually take him to London, where a move in his early twenties unlocked new opportunities to perform and produce. Those years in the UK allowed him to sharpen his sound—one rooted in house but touched by disco, hip hop, and UK garage influences.



Now based in Los Angeles, CHESSTER tours consistently across Europe and the U.S., performing at top venues while maintaining a steady output of productions. His work has landed on respected labels like PIV, Factory 93, Dansu Discs, and Range. In 2025, he launched his own imprint, Blink, with the goal of putting out thoughtful, high-quality house music.

In this interview, CHESSTER opens up about early setbacks, personal routines, and studio habits, offering a closer look at the personality behind the decks. From his go-to pre-show snack (pizza) to the record that never leaves his USB (Cleptomaniacs’ “All I Do”), CHESSTER proves to be as grounded as he is experienced.

I’m lucky to have an incredibly talented group of artist friends. Working with them is my main source of inspiration.

I don’t really get obsessed over anything in particular these days, but the mix of a song is something I tend to spend quite some time on!

Nothing Lost, Nothing Wasted: A Sit Down with CHESSTER

Before Belladonna became a name to watch in the electronic scene, Nico Chiara was already quietly shaping the sound of a generation. Starting his music career at the age of 12, Chiara built his foundation in the studio—producing records for artists across Germany, wider Europe, and eventually breaking into the U.S. market. Over the years, he developed a reputation for clean, impactful sound design and technical precision. That work led to over 1.67 billion total streams across platforms, 45 gold records, 12 platinum certifications, two #1 Billboard hits, and six #1 albums in Germany.



But despite these numbers, Nico found himself at a creative crossroads. Producing for others came with limitations—always adapting to another artist’s voice, meeting label expectations, or aligning with commercial formulas. The need to strip all of that away led to the creation of Belladonna, a project built on full autonomy, where nothing is filtered through outside opinion or market demands. 



The name itself, Belladonna, holds meaning beyond its sonic identity. It references Atropa Belladonna, the deadly nightshade plant used historically as both poison and elixir. In the Middle Ages, it was mixed into enemy water supplies, used for hallucinations by mystics, and applied by nobility in small doses to dilate pupils—a symbol of beauty. This tension between allure and danger mirrors the aesthetic and musical identity of the project. Belladonna isn’t designed to conform to existing categories. It operates more like a reaction—one that is immersive, layered, and unpredictable.



While many know Nico Chiara as a hip-hop producer first, the shift to melodic techno wasn't a rebranding move—it was a natural evolution. Belladonna doesn’t reject his hip-hop background. Instead, it draws from it, especially when it comes to vocal work. In interviews, Chiara has emphasized that vocals are the key element he brings from hip-hop into the techno realm. While many melodic techno tracks lean entirely on instrumental atmosphere, Belladonna’s sound integrates storytelling through vocal layers, adding structure and emotional depth.



Sonically, Belladonna exists in the orbit of labels like Afterlife and artists like Anyma and Tale of Us, but it doesn’t rely on imitation. Tracks are long, slow-building, and composed with a deliberate sense of tension and release. Percussion patterns often swing with the looseness of hip-hop, while the synth work focuses on mood and scale. It's a combination that gives the music both weight and motion. Belladonna’s production setup includes FL Studio, Ableton, and Pro Tools, with analog synths like the Moog XL Voyager and the Korg Minilogue XD used alongside digital tools such as Serum and Dive.



In August 2024, Nico made his live debut as Belladonna at Void Club in Mykonos, playing a B2B set immediately after Korolova. From there, his performance schedule expanded quickly—La Guérite in Cannes, Sky Club in Malta, and Railway Park in Budapest (alongside headliners like ARTBAT and Rebūke) are just a few of the stages he’s since played. These shows marked a turning point—not just as performances, but as visual experiences. 



One of Belladonna’s most significant breakthroughs came in early 2025 at Zamna Festival in Tulum. His collaboration “WHERE I’M FROM” with Cassian and Script, even before its official release, became the most-played track at the festival. The song received early support from major acts including Anyma, Tale of Us, Chris Avantgarde, Massano, Tiësto, and CamelPhat. The official release in March 2025 landed it at #1 on Beatport’s Melodic House & Techno chart. It was a concrete moment of validation—proof that Belladonna’s sound could resonate not just creatively, but commercially.



Beyond the music and performances, Belladonna’s presence on social media reflects the same level of intentionality. The feed avoids trend-chasing and oversharing. Instead, it’s curated to feel like an extension of the music—minimal, high contrast, moody, and cinematic. Each post is part of a visual narrative, echoing the identity of the live show and sonic universe.



In an industry that often rewards volume and visibility over vision, Belladonna stands out by choosing quality control, tight storytelling, and a long-term strategy. It’s a project with depth, but more importantly, direction—rooted in a past that shaped it, but looking forward to a space that Nico Chiara is actively helping define.

The story begins in 1980 with the opening of Café del Mar. Initially a modest bar, its unique, sea-inspired architecture by Lluis Güell gave it an iconic look.
