Straight out of Bogotá’s DIY underground, BRAIN has spent the last decade honing a sound that combines the cadence of Latin America with the energy of UK D&B. The result is a fresh, vibrant and compelling take on the genre, and with his debut album soon to be released, he’s all set to take over the world.






Background




Born and raised in a suburb of Bogotá, Colombia, Juan Aguilar got a taste for the underground through hardcore, punk and metal. One night, after an evening spent moshing at an underground club called Piso3, a DJ stepped behind the decks and started playing a D&B set. “There was this DJ with dreadlocks, turntables, and he was playing these records and I was really curious about finding out how they made these crazy sounds,” Juan says. The DJ turned out to be DJ Sebass, who soon became Juan’s mentor.


Juan’s first D&B rave was called Radikal Styles, a huge festival in Bogotá with three stages that covered D&B, hardcore and techno. They brought huge global artists like Goldie, DLR and Calyx & Teebee, and that’s when Juan’s love for the genre was solidified. “So after that I started music production, I was about 21, and I started to focus on how to make these sounds,” he says.



At the time, D&B and Jungle was extremely niche in Colombia, so it was challenging for Juan to find out how to produce the genre, but after experimenting for a year he released his first track in 2012 on the first Bogotá Drum & Bass compilation on a label called Fractal Records, run by some of the early pioneers of D&B in Colombia. And that’s how the BRAIN project started.







D&B and Columbia


Drum & Bass' migration to Colombia is particularly unique. Back in the ‘90s, free raves and D&B culture was routinely suppressed by authorities in the UK and across Europe, so a group of disillusioned French D&B artists and promoters decided to pack it in and relocate to Colombia. They brought their percussive sounds and fresh ideas and started throwing free raves on the outskirts of Medellín and Colombia. “These French guys brought their vinyls, their music and started to make the free parties,” Juan says. “It was very special, because it was really underground, really DIY, really alternative and deviant from society.”




That’s the energy BRAIN was swallowed up in. At first he focused on producing but then realized it was important to play the music he made, so he soon started DJing. “Bogotá’s sound is dark, industrial, you can feel that big city vibe,” Juan says.




His first gig was the launch party of his first release, and then he joined local rave crew Reset. “They are the biggest crew in Latin America, they’re from Bogotá, and they have so many big artists - too many to name,” Juan says. Juan toured Europe with this crew, playing to increasingly large audiences, honing his sound and building a base of loyal listeners.







Label and Releases




Juan started his own label ID Bogotá in 2020 with Novaglitch. His aim is to platform D&B artists from Latin America, championing the continent’s unique take on the genre and catapulting it onto world stages. He’s released music by Novaglitch, Bassment, Jaynie and dozens more, but this October sees BRAIN’s biggest release yet – his debut album, Prisma.




Written over the course of three turbulent years, Prisma is a sonic exploration of personal transformation and reflection. The 13-track project is a journey through BRAIN’s musical influences, woven together by the extreme emotions that come with sacrificing everything to follow your dreams – Juan relocated from Bogotá to London in 2023 with the hope of building a UK scene rooted in the sound of Latin American D&B.







“I sold everything I own to follow my dream and to come here to start from zero,” he says. The vinyl has already sold out on pre-order, and Juan hopes to use this momentum to bring artists from Colombia over to the UK to share their music and sound.




“I want to stay here to make things better for my friends,” he says. “There are so many talented artists in Colombia, people I really respect, and I really want to support them.”

Drum & Bass in Focus: BRAIN

Mizeyesis’ journey into D&B started in the mid-90s, when she fully immersed herself in New York’s fast-paced underground, with a music taste influenced by her Caribbean roots. Since then she’s been a staple on the US scene, dedicating her career to ensuring women get the opportunity to flourish and grow, while playing an integral role in the inclusive and supportive nature of the latest wave of D&B.




Where It All Began




Today, Mizeyesis chats from her home in Boston. Born and raised in NYC, Mizeyesis grew up listening to an eclectic range of music including reggae, punk and hip hop. Her family is from the Caribbean, and she remembers her relatives visiting from London in the ‘80s and telling her all about the clubs they went to. It was around the time that house music was becoming popular, and soon Mizeyesis started listening to it herself.




“I remember thinking to myself ‘when I’m older, I want to go to an event where everyone’s smiling and they’re playing house music,” she says. “It seemed really, really cool.”




By the late ‘80s, NYC was popping. “I started discovering lots of sounds that were coming out of the UK,” Mizeyesis says. “And I heard one track and asked what it is, and someone told me it’s Jungle.”




That was the beginning of Mizeyesis’ never-ending love affair with the genre. She graduated high school in ’96 and started going to a club called Konkrete Jungle in New York with her cousins. To Mizeyesis, Jungle felt like a well-kept secret. “I really didn’t want people to know about it,” she says. “It felt like something reserved for really, really cool people.”




Konkrete Jungle was the stateside home for Drum & Bass, which soon morphed into the legendary club NASA. Throughout the ‘90s she traveled all over the US to attend raves, and by the 2000s her thirst for the genre had become so unquenchable she started learning to DJ herself.




A Fruitful Career




Mizeyesis purchased her first pair of decks in 2002, and went on to launch a career that’s been expansive, colorful and crucial to the global sound of D&B. “It was a very, very new thing when I started DJing,” she says. “There weren’t many women at all, I was one of the few, so I started throwing my own shows and started a collective of women.” Her early gigs included Municipal Cafe in Hartford for 100% High Octane, followed by a show with THRESHOLD, a club night designed to give Connecticut’s club community a second home. She soon became its co-creator, and a member of Awake Productions and NYC’s Basscamp Recordings.




Mizeyesis never stuck to one genre, instead incorporating elements of dubstep, grime, breakbeat and bass culture into her sets. So when the jungle revival came along in the late 2000s, she was one step ahead. “In the United States, a lot of people wanted to hear a specific type of D&B again, and people like myself who came up in a certain time were well placed for that,” she says.




In 2011, she joined a chapter of Zulu Nation called Hipstep Massive LLC, spearheaded by TC Izlam, which aimed to educate mainstream music fans on the origins of electronic dance music. By 2012 Mizeyesis had her own radio show on jungletrain.net, which led to a mix for Wu Tang Radio, an East Coast tour with Senses, and a residency at Twisted Tuesdays in Hartford.




Mizeyesis started producing in 2016, with her first EP Convergence coming out on Omni Music. Since then she’s released on Yeska Beatz Unlimited, Monochrome Recordings and Junglist Manifesto, collaborating with huge names in the D&B and jungle game.




DNB Girls




Around that time, TC Izlam suggested she start following her passion of platforming other women. So she started researching, and came across a network of women in D&B in Canada. “There was one woman who now goes by Kilma, and she started a collective called DNB Girls,” Mizeyesis says. “They were doing something really innovative at that point in time: pushing women to the fore who weren’t getting fair treatment as artists.”




Soon, they expanded into the US and Mizeyesis became their US manager. That was 12 years ago and DNB girls are still going strong, describing themselves as “A North American collective of hardworking female producers, DJs, vocalists & artists devoted to drum & bass music & its culture.” 

Their work is centered around women, non-binary and femme identifying persons and they’re on a mission to empower women within the DNB and jungle scene while ensuring gender equity on line-ups. They have a wildly popular podcast and stream series and their community ranges from heavyweights like Kytami and Lovelace to new, emerging talent like Athena and Distinct.




And Mizeyesis has no plans to slow down. With recent gigs at Respect DNB in LA, Elements in Boston and Regenerate in Detroit, it’s fair to say Mizeyesis continues to make a historical impact on the global sound of DNB and jungle.

D&B in Focus: Mizeyesis

Scottish electronic music duo LF SYSTEM, comprising Conor Larkman and Sean Finnigan, has made a meteoric rise from the club scene of Edinburgh to dominating the UK charts with their unique blend of disco-infused house music. Since joining forces in 2019, they've transitioned from local underground gigs to performing at some of the world's most renowned festivals and venues, including Boiler Room,  Amnesia, One Out Festival, Hideout Festival, Day Trip LA, Fisher Presents, Mau P's backyard, and the illustrious Tomorrowland.




Their breakthrough track, "Afraid to Feel," which cleverly samples Silk’s 1979 hit, catapulted them to the top of the UK charts, marking a significant milestone as the first UK dance number one since 2020. This success was not just a high point but a turning point, shifting them from working day jobs to touring globally, showcasing their robust ability to blend classic and contemporary sounds that resonate across generations of dance music enthusiasts. This track became a summer anthem, transcending genres and amassing close to 425 million streams.




In an exclusive interview with LF SYSTEM, we delve into their musical journey, exploring the roots of their partnership, their artistic process, and how they handle the newfound pressures of fame. They also share personal anecdotes and future aspirations, giving fans an intimate glimpse into the minds behind the grooves. How did your musical partnership begin, and what initially brought you two together?

We first crossed paths playing football against each other as young teenagers but didn’t really know each other. It wasn’t until a bit later in life when we started going to clubs around age 17 that we bumped into each other, the first place being The Arches in Glasgow. We got talking about music, DJing, and production as we had both been doing it separately, and things just rolled on from there. 



We got involved in a DJ collective in Edinburgh playing back-to-back sets, started going to each other's houses to make music, and then decided to join forces in 2019 and create LF SYSTEM.



Can you describe the moment you realized that LF SYSTEM was going to be more than just a side project?

We always had this belief that it could be more than just a hobby one day. It was probably around the time we started getting radio play quite frequently that it became more of a reality.



What inspired you to blend disco with modern house music in your tracks?

We’re both big disco, funk, and soul fans, and also fans of artists who were sampling these records, e.g., the French Touch era. We wanted to try and create what we were listening to, and it felt natural to be doing it with music we loved too.



How do you balance respecting the original artists when sampling classics for your new tracks?

We find this a very important part of sampling. We make sure we do our research and find out everything we can about the artist/band and the records. We also respect where the music came from and why it was made. And of course, we always credit and do things legally so the original artists get their fair share.



"Afraid to Feel" has been a massive success. Can you walk us through the process of creating this track?

The first idea came from a sort of slow disco edit, just messing around with it, and it also had a sample from the Men In Black movie at the beginning. I sent it over to Conor after he was like, ‘What is that sample? I need to have a play with it.’ He then made a faster version, beefed up with a 909, and we were left with 2 versions. We couldn’t decide on which version to stick on SoundCloud, so we ended up joining them both together, hence the slowdowns throughout the track.



What was your reaction when you found out "Afraid to Feel" hit number one on the UK charts?

It all happened quite fast, so it felt very surreal. It entered the chart at 69 then 13, 4, 3, 2, and then 1. We actually went to the pub and celebrated it entering at 69 and had no idea where it was going to end up. We were so buzzing it’s hard to describe.



How have your lives changed since gaining international recognition?

Our lives changed drastically; we went from working at a petrol station and as a roofer to traveling all over doing what we love. It's the best thing that's ever happened to us.



What are some challenges you've faced as you've transitioned from local gigs to international stages?

We used to get extremely nervous to the point of being unwell, haha. We weren’t used to it at all and had to learn how to be better DJs, deal with nerves, play festivals, and headline shows.



What's your approach to remixes, and how do you decide which songs to rework?

Choosing tracks we really like the original of is very important to us. We will only take it on if it’s something we feel we can do something with and that can fit into our sets.



Can you share insights into your creative process when starting a new track?

Often we start ideas individually as that’s how we worked previously being solo. Once we have ideas, we show each other them, decide if they are worth pursuing, and then sit together in the studio and finish them if they are. There’s a lot of digging for samples involved, then making drum grooves, etc.



What has been the most memorable venue or event you've played at to date?

Tomorrowland has probably got to be the one. We watched that as kids growing up and it just looked like the best time. We performed there in 2023 and it was everything we expected and more. We’ve been so lucky to perform in so many amazing places though.



Looking forward, what are some goals you hope to achieve with LF SYSTEM?

We just want to keep doing this thing we call a job for as long as possible. Maybe starting our own label at some point, releasing an album, releasing on some of our favorite labels, and playing in iconic venues.



How do you stay connected with your fans and the dance music community?

The broadcast channel on Instagram is a good way to keep in touch directly with the people who support us.



What advice would you give to aspiring DJs and producers who look up to you?

Get into it for the right reasons, have fun, and don’t take it too seriously but work hard at it.



Is there an artist or producer you dream of collaborating with?

There are loads of people we would love to work with. In fact, there might be one coming soon.



If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your lives, which would it be and why?

Conor: Paolo Nutini - Sunny Side Up. If I could only listen to one album it would be this; every tune is a banger and I reckon I wouldn’t be as quick to get sick of it.



Sean: Oasis - Definitely Maybe. What a band.





What's the most unexpected song or artist we might find in your personal music collection?

Conor: James Horner. Love a bit of James Horner, his soundtracks and scores are belters when you feel like you want to feel your feelings.

Sean: It feels normal to me but probably East Coast hip hop. Love that stuff.

If LF SYSTEM had a motto, what would it be?

Be sound.



What’s the funniest or most bizarre thing that has happened during one of your shows?

Conor: Having a very unfortunate dash back to our hotel in Arizona for a rather badly timed case of upset stomach. It was about a 5 min run away, with 5 mins before going on stage to start the show, and it was 50 degrees Celsius. All in all, great fun.

Favorite country or city to visit when you need downtime or a getaway?

Scotland.

Disco Fevers to Chart Leaders: A Chat with LF SYSTEM

Ranger Trucco, one of house music's breakthrough artists, has been steadily gaining attention for his shift from tech house to a more minimal, deep house sound. Growing up in Traverse City, Michigan, far from the typical nightlife hotspots, Ranger’s passion for electronic music was ignited at festivals like Electric Forest. This exposure to live music became the catalyst for his career, which really took off in 2020 when he was featured on Space Yacht’s Tech My House virtual tour.




Since then, Ranger has performed at well-known festivals and clubs across the U.S., building a reputation for sets at events like Club Space, Hangout Fest, Electric Forest (full circle moment), Experts Only, The Shrine, and many more. However, it’s not just his live performances that have garnered attention—Ranger has also made big moves in music production, label management, and organizing his own shows.




In 2022, Ranger launched range. Records as a platform to release his evolving sound and support other newcomers exploring creative directions. "Range was actually created because I wanted my sound to evolve but did not want to pivot on a dime and instead self-release some deeper cuts here and there to gauge if my fans and friends were feeling it," he explains. 



Launching his own label gave him the space to test out his growing interest in deep tech and synth-heavy productions, a departure from the tech house sound he had become known for. "When I started receiving positive feedback on my more deep tech / synth-heavy production, it really got me excited because it was a new sound that had my interest," Ranger adds, noting that he didn't want to feel stuck in one genre.




One of the core principles behind range. Records is its emphasis on originality. For Ranger, it’s not about fitting a mold but bringing something new to the table. “Originality will always stand out—way, way out. Whether it’s original vocals, original production like real instruments or hardware, or even sound design you’ve trademarked, songs get signed when artists bring something new to a label, not when they try to fit in with what the label’s ‘sound’ is,” he says. 



This approach has helped range. build a reputation for offering something fresh to the house music scene, signing names like Stef Davidse, Lunoize, and Riley, among others. The label's releases have been supported by major artists such as Dennis Cruz, PAWSA, and ALISHA. Additionally, range. has expanded into an event brand, hosting parties throughout the country. Though still relatively new, the brand has held fewer than ten shows in cities like Miami, Chicago, Denver, and Tempe.

Ranger’s willingness to travel and collaborate with international prospects has also shaped his view on the universality of music. "It’s pretty wild how similar we all are across countries and even language barriers," he says. 

Whether in the U.S. or Europe, Ranger has found that artists share many of the same struggles—balancing imaginative pursuits with the demands of selling tickets and maintaining a social media presence. For Ranger, this realization has reinforced his belief that music is a "universal language."


Looking ahead, Ranger sees both range. and his own sound continuing to develop. He’s not one to stick with a formula if it doesn’t inspire him anymore, and he’s keen on seeing where his new interests take him next. "It felt like a second chapter to my project, and who knows where it will go next. I always think you should only produce if your heart's in it," he says. This openness to change, along with his focus on ingenuity, makes Ranger Trucco and his brand feel like a compass pointing toward the unexpected, constantly steering both himself and his audience into uncharted musical territory.

"Range of Possibilities": Ranger Trucco Talks Labels, Minimal Grooves, and Building His Brand

Last night, New York’s dance community witnessed something truly magical at the Superior Ingredients Rooftop. What was originally planned as a four-hour set by South African Afro-house sensation Shimza evolved into an unforgettable experience that will go down in history. The sold-out event was already buzzing with anticipation, but the night took an even more exciting turn with an extraordinary back-to-back (B2B) reunion that no one saw coming.




The night kicked off with Shimza dominating the decks, as he’s known to do. One of our generation's most talented DJs and producers, Shimza doesn’t just play tracks; he works the decks like no other. He feels the music and knows exactly how to read a crowd, controlling the energy and creating an atmosphere that keeps everyone hooked. 



His signature blend of Afro-house beats and deep, soulful grooves had the rooftop alive with excitement. As Shimza extended his set for an extra hour, it became clear to everyone in attendance that this night was far from ordinary. His mastery behind the decks and ability to keep the energy soaring made the rooftop feel electric.




And just when it seemed the night couldn’t get any better, the South African house music legend Black Coffee made a surprise appearance. While Shimza had already set the tone for an incredible night, Black Coffee’s arrival was like icing on the cake. 



Known for his global influence in the house music scene, Black Coffee joined Shimza for a spontaneous B2B, sparking a reunion that gave fans flashbacks to their early days as a duo called The Rhythm. The chemistry between the two icons was undeniable as they seamlessly blended tracks, creating a vibe that felt nostalgic yet powerful.



However, the night didn’t end there. After an already extended rooftop set, the momentum was so strong that there was no way we were going to let it stop. So, the party moved downstairs to the J.Bird room, where Shimza and Black Coffee continued their B2B well into the early hours of Monday morning. It was the kind of after-party that no one knew they needed, but everyone was thrilled to be part of, extending the magic of the night even further.




For fans, the night was a dream come true. Shimza’s solo performance had already made the evening something to remember, and Black Coffee’s surprise appearance added another layer of excitement. Together, these two South African icons delivered an extraordinary night that no one in attendance will soon forget. It felt like we all made history together! Lee Foss, a Chicago native, has been one of the most influential and reputable names in the house and tech house scene. Growing up in the city where house music was born, Lee Foss was immersed in Chicago’s legendary underground scene from an early age. It wasn’t long before he gained attention for his unique sound and sharp production skills, setting him on a path to becoming one of the genre’s most impactful figures. A co-founder of the renowned label Hot Creations alongside Jamie Jones, Foss also launched Repopulate Mars, South of Saturn, and North of Neptune, helping define the direction of today's house music.



Throughout his career, Foss has worked with and nurtured talent like John Summit, Mau P, and Michael Bibi, providing them with a platform that has propelled their careers to international recognition. Known for his ability to spot fresh talent, he’s introduced countless artists to the global stage, securing his place as a tastemaker in the industry.

With a career that’s spanned over a decade and an undeniable impact on the music world, Foss continues to lead the charge, both as a DJ and a label boss. Now, let’s dive into our Q&A with him to get a closer look at his journey and what’s next.



Your new single "Pieces of the Night Sky" is coming soon on Repopulate Mars. Can you tell us anything about this?

My new single is coming out on Repopulate Mars on October 25, right after the show in New York. This is the first time I’ve sung on a record. I’ve been songwriting and producing for the past 15 years professionally, but this is the first time I’ve actually sung. It means a lot to me to finally put some emotion behind what I’m writing and to show that vulnerability. I think the song is sick. It's definitely a big step to perform live in front of people, but I feel like it’s time because I can carry it as an artist, and I think the song is great.

What qualities do you look for in up-and-coming artists when signing them to Repopulate Mars?

I look for fresh music, things that stand out, and also people I want to be around. Personality matters because you don’t want to tour with a bunch of assholes. A lot of clubs and festivals, especially in places like Space, trust me to break new artists and do back-to-backs with them. Whether it’s John Summit, Mau P, or Michael Bibi, their first Space shows were with me as back-to-backs. Especially in America, I think I'm a tastemaker, but the music has to be good, and they have to consistently deliver good tracks. Plus, they need to genuinely like the brand and be fun to be around—no jerks.



Name three artists that come to mind when you think of ‘underrated’ on any of your labels/sub-labels?

That’s hard because even the guys who got big, like John Summit, Mau P, and Michael Bibi, are still underrated in their own ways. 



I’ve signed a lot of great artists across my labels, but I’d say Joshwa is one of the best producers out there, and he still doesn’t get his due. 



Obviously, we had a huge collab together, but all his songs are bangers. Deeper Purpose is really growing in America, but I think he's underrated as a songwriter, producer, and DJ.



As someone who deals with technology and computers to write music, has there been a gut-wrenching moment where you lost your music or beats you were working on?

Yeah, I’ve lost a lot of songs that I hadn’t saved, sometimes after four or five hours of work. That’s really gut-wrenching because you can never recreate what you did. I remember working with Ardalan a year or two ago. We got five or six hours into a project, and then it crashed, and we lost it. 



That’s uncommon now with better technology, but it still happens. Also, my laptop was stolen in Rosarito, Mexico, in 2010. They tried to ransom it back to me, but I had a bunch of unfinished project files on it, and losing those was devastating. I lost a lot of old project files, WAVs, and things I had bounced that I can’t get back.

From the production side of throwing a Repopulate Mars party, what’s the most important thing to have for a kick-ass show?

The most important thing varies depending on the market and the crowd. I love to make it immersive. You can’t always control all the factors depending on the venue, whether it’s Miami, Dubai, Ibiza, or Japan—each place is different. But I love having alien dancers, like we had a laser cage in Ibiza for a 14-week residency. I think giving people that immersive feel, like they’re really on another planet, fits that funky, alien style we go for. I’m also getting into filmmaking, so the visual side is really important to me.



How do you support the artists on Repopulate Mars beyond just releasing their music?

I think they know I’m going to champion their songs. I don’t sign anything to Repopulate Mars unless I’m playing it in my sets. So, I’m not just releasing it, but I’m trying to play it in most of my sets, get good videos, chart it, put it on my Spotify playlist, and interact with the artists. When I break records, whether they’re on Repopulate Mars or not, I’m getting them into the hands of the right DJs. 



For example, with Massano or Meduza, I broke their first big records, and I made sure my friends were playing them. If it's great music and involves my friends, I’m out there getting it heard.

What has been the most challenging aspect of running Repopulate Mars?

People think it’s a bigger label than it actually is. In terms of infrastructure, it’s really just me and Kaysin (Nick Sommers), who’s my main A&R. We’re the only actual employees. We have a label manager and PR, but they’re not technically employees of the label. 



So, we’re competing and outselling much bigger labels with a lot more staff. A lot of the work falls on me—I do the art, I make all the decisions—and that can be challenging. I’m running multiple labels, producing, DJing, traveling, and even starting to write for TV, so staying on top of everything is tough.

If you could eternally be stuck in one year's music scene, which year would it be?

Oh, wow, that’s hard. I’d say 1984. I’d also choose 1997 for hip-hop and 2001 for house music—that was my first summer in Ibiza, and it was magical.



Favorite restaurant in Ibiza and Chicago?

That’s a good question! Those are two of the best places on Earth, and I love food. In Ibiza, it’s Casa Maca, an amazing restaurant. In Chicago, I love Joe’s Crab Shack. Even though it’s a chain, they get all their seafood directly from Alaska, so it’s always fresh. Definitely check those places out!

The Unreal x FYM ADE event will take place on October 16, 2024, at AFAS Live, Amsterdam, during the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). Running from 22:00 to 08:00, this night promises an electrifying experience with a lineup featuring some of the biggest names in techno and hard techno. The event will include performances from 999999999, an Italian duo known for their high-energy techno, and I Hate Models from France, a prominent figure in the underground rave scene.





Also on the lineup are Johannes Schuster, offering darker industrial sounds, and Kobosil, a Berlin-based DJ famous for his heavy beats. UK artist ØTTA, rising star Somewhen, and Dutch talent Stan Christ will further intensify the night's atmosphere. Expect immersive audiovisual spectacles and a deep journey into the world of techno​.




Oi! Anniversary: Skream and Benga Reunite for a Dubstep Revival at Paradiso

On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, the iconic dubstep and grime club night Oi! returns to Paradiso during ADE after a seven-year break. This special event will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Oi! with a back-to-back set from Skream and Benga, two pioneers of the dubstep scene. Over the years, both artists have experimented with genres like house and techno, but for this night, they will revisit their dubstep roots. Joining them will be UK DJ Neffa-T, as well as Brutuzz and Gomes, the founder of Oi!, performing together. The lineup is completed by Moroman and Drew MC, making it a night filled with heavy bass and dubstep nostalgia​.



The venue for the event is Paradiso, one of Amsterdam’s most iconic music locations. Skream and Benga, both of whom started their careers at the legendary Big Apple Records in Croydon, were instrumental in shaping the early dubstep scene. Skream’s debut album Skream! and Benga’s New Step played pivotal roles in the genre’s rise, with both artists continuing to influence the scene through their collaborations and solo projects.

ADE Random Vinyl Marathon: 60 DJs, 60 Hours of Pure Vinyl at Q-Factory




The ADE Random Vinyl Marathon 2024 will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at Q-Factory in Amsterdam as part of the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). This event runs for an impressive 60 hours non-stop, with 60 DJs spinning vinyl-only sets. The marathon celebrates a variety of genres, including house, techno, and disco, offering a unique, vinyl-focused experience.



The DJs performing at the ADE Random Vinyl Marathon 2024 on Thursday, October 17 include: Abstract, ArnouX, DJ Etienne, DJ Fortuin, DJ Melanie, DJ Nobody Knows, DJ Nympho, Fatcat dePousse, Femmebot Grooves, Funky Creature, LBM 12, Lenzz, Lex on Wax, Marc Hartman, Niall Redmond, Psygogh, Robbers, Samo DJ, SchallPaul, Sergi Elias, and The Organist​.

PIV ADE Tower Takeover at A'DAM Tower

The PIV ADE Tower Takeover at the A'DAM Tower on October 17, 2024, offers a range of music-focused events across multiple floors of the iconic building.




Starting at the Panorama Bar, PIV’s demo drop will offer upcoming producers the chance to have their work reviewed by PIV's A&R team, with workshops by Dennis Quin and Kellie Allen for select participants. In the evening, Ma’dam will host a soulful house event with a touch of disco, featuring DJs like Demuja, Eileen, and a b2b set by Kirollus and Tonno Disko, all set against the backdrop of the Amsterdam skyline. At Shelter, located underground, expect intense basslines and energetic drops from artists like Gaskin, Kellie Allen, and Prunk.



Meanwhile, Chesster and Ruze will take over the restroom for a unique set. Finally, on October 18th, The Loft will host a sunrise session with incredible views from its floor-to-ceiling windows. The Awakenings ADE 2024 event, part of the Amsterdam Dance Event, will feature a series of marathon techno sessions across two iconic venues, Gashouder and Ziggo Dome. Running from October 16 to 20, 2024, it includes eight major events, each led by renowned techno artists and labels.



Highlights include performances from Joseph Capriati, Amelie Lens, and Joris Voorn, along with curated nights like Adriatique presents X on October 18 and Drumcode by Adam Beyer on October 17. These events promise a mix of melodic and hard-hitting techno across expansive venues, known for their intense sound and visuals​.




Monstercat x Blacklist at Melkweg



The Monstercat x Blacklist event at Melkweg during ADE 2024, on October 17, promises an unforgettable night of bass and high-energy electronic music. Monstercat, a leader in independent electronic music, teams up with Germany's biggest bass festival, Blacklist, to take over both the Max and OZ rooms of the venue for this massive showcase. The event will run from 23:00 to 07:00.



The lineup includes heavy hitters such as Crankdat, Dillon Francis, Dirtyphonics, Kayzo, Jessica Audiffred, Weird Genius, and WHIPPED CREAM. Additional artists like Arcando, Careline, Gladde Paling, Going Quantum (b2b with Hayve), Kompany, REAPER, RZRKT, and more will be delivering a range of bass, dubstep, and high-octane beats throughout the night.

EXIT Fest x Crane Sessions

What happens in the Crane stays in the Crane…The EXIT Fest x Crane Sessions at ADE 2024 will take place on October 18 at the Crane Hotel Faralda, offering a spectacular setting 50 meters above Amsterdam. The lineup for the event features UK-based DJ Hot Since 82, Serbian duo Innēr Sense, and Croatian DJ LANNA. This exclusive event promises an intimate atmosphere combined with deep house and tech house sounds, creating a memorable experience high above the city.




Rampage Amsterdam


The Rampage Amsterdam 2024 event is set for October 18, 2024, at Hemkade 48 in Zaandam during the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). Known as one of the biggest drum and bass and dubstep events, Rampage will feature an incredible lineup, including artists such as NGHTMRE, Wilkinson, Jessica Audiffred, GRAFIX, and KOAN Sound. Nine Amsterdam Dance Events You Can’t Miss

Although the UK usually gets the credit, ever since the inception of D&B there’s been a flourishing scene stateside, too. DJ, producer and label head Reid Speed has been there since day one. She witnessed its emergence in the side rooms of New York’s nightclubs and saw it grow into a sound that dominates festivals all over the world. Today, Reid shares her journey into D&B, how the scene has developed since the early days, and how the latest surge of D&B has brought diversity, inclusivity and endless opportunities.







D&B in NYC

Born and raised in Long Island, New York, Reid started making mixtapes for her friends at a very young age, because she found it the most effective way to express herself. Her first introduction to the rave environment came when she was about 15 years old and living in Boulder, Colorado. “It felt like the DJ was making a mixtape live,” Reid says. "And something connected in me and I understood this is what I need to be doing. I need to find a way to make this my life.”




Reid first came across Jungle in high school in 1994, and from there segued into New York’s vibrant underground. Clubs like Limelight, Tunnel, Konkrete Jungle, and Save the Robots dominated the scene, and they always had second rooms that played jungle. “I didn’t know the difference between genres then,” she says. “But I just found my way into the side room and gravitated towards the faster music.”




Back then the jungle scene was tiny and vibrant, with just a handful of DJs who mastered the craft of mixing and producing these high-octane BPMs. “There was a lot of local talent in New York,” Reid says. “There was DJ Odi, there was Dieselboy, there was DJ DB, Dara, this guy called Jeffee from Florida, and they were the big national DJs.”






Around the mid ‘90s, promoters started flying in the UK names, like DJ Storm, Goldie, DJ Hype, and Lemon D. “I think it was 1991 or 1992 that DB, the co-founder of Breakbeat Science, founded a club called NASA, which became the seminal breakbeat club of the United States. It was the first club, as far as I know, that exclusively catered to the sound."




Launching a DJ Career

Just as Reid promised herself in Colorado, she soon found herself behind the decks. From 1996 she worked at a record store called Breakbeat Science, where she got to know the local DJs, until she was offered a slot at Hot Fudge Sundays. “After that they offered me residency at their jungle party called Camouflage, and then within a couple of months I became a D&B resident at Stuck on Earth, which put me in front of thousands of people every week.”




After that Reid juggled three residencies, and brought overseas guests over all the time. “1997 to 2000 was like the golden era of D&B in New York,” Reid says. “It was seven nights a week, and the parties were packed.”


Producer and Label Head

It’s impossible to underestimate just how seminal Reid Speed has been to developing the D&B underground in the US. She founded her labels Play Me Records and Play Me Too in the late 2000s, and was instrumental in releasing some of bass music’s most loved names including Dr. Apollo, Sam Foxx and Selekta and first or early releases from bass music greats Dillon Francis, MUST DIE, and Eliminate."




She turned her hand to production in 1997, and released many tracks over the following decade, collaborating with some of the biggest names in the genre and living up to her name with breakneck BPMs. In that time she wrote a full album that was sadly never released.




As one of the few women on the scene since day one, Reid has made it her personal mission to make sure more women break through, and she welcomes the diversity and inclusivity of D&B’s third wave.













“D&B has become mainstream in festivals,” Reid says. “But we've never had the support of radio and corporate media.” In some ways, the scene has become fractured – big names are playing D&B at festivals, which is expanding people’s taste, however the underground remains a separate entity.




“The underground is in a really great place,” Reid says. “I love that a lot of DJs and artists who put in work for 20 plus years are now gaining enough popularity to be nationally touring, especially a lot of women who are finally breaking through.”




Having spent decades behind the decks, Reid is happy to give space to the new wave of emerging artists. “It's really nice to kind of take a step back and just be the cheerleader and give a platform to this new generation of talent who is blossoming and thriving,” Reid says. “I'm helping to build the next generation of the scene, and it brings me great joy to be able to facilitate that.”

Known for curating world-class lineups that celebrate minimal techno and deep house, the Trip series will continue throughout the month with stellar performances from your favorite DJs.

The Best Way to Get to Ibiza from Mainland Europe

In The Lab Recordings is an independent D&B label operating out of Northamptonshire, founded by DJ/producer Spectra T (AKA Andy Tiller) and DJ/producer Kendot (AKA Mckenzie 'Kenny' Dean). What started as a D&B party series aimed at filling a cultural void in that part of the UK soon turned into a future-focused label, aimed at exploring the techy and experimental side of Drum & Bass. Today Kendot shares his insight on running the label, what makes the genre unique and his ambitions to expand and progress the sound.




The Early Days

Kendot, AKA Kenny, grew up in a small town in Northamptonshire called Brackley, somewhere between Oxford, Milton, Keynes and Northampton. The first time Kenny heard anything close to Drum & Bass was when Pendulum played a festival near his childhood home and their tracks drifted in through his bedroom window. Then he bought The Prodigy’s Invaders Must Die album in 2009, and after that he was a goner.




“When I got older I fell into Drum & Bass through YouTube,” he says. “At the time, I didn't really understand the different types of electronic music. It was just music and I was just enjoying what I was hearing.”




Then, when he turned 18, he went to a Noisia night in Oxford, followed by Liquicity festival in Netherlands, where he was exposed to all the corners of Drum & Bass. “After that I was no longer a music fan, I was a Drum & Bass guy,” he says, and not long after he got home he bought a set of decks and started learning to DJ.




Filling the Void

In The Lab started as an event series because Kenny and Spectra T didn’t have anywhere to DJ in their neighborhood. “We live in the middle of nowhere,” Kenny says. “There’s no clubs, so we thought well if there’s no gigs we’ll make our own.”




Their first event in Brackley was a huge success. With no clubs within miles, the party attracted a crowd of older D&B heads and young people on the hunt for a good night out. It was the tail-end of 2018 and Drum & Bass was on the rise for its third resurgence. “Our event was absolutely packed so we kept running nights,” Kenny says. “Then lockdown was the catalyst to launch In The Lab as a label. Everyone was locked in their houses, we started doing live streams, and shared guest mixes with a full track list and press pack. It was a very varied cross section of Drum & Bass, not just one genre, and not just one style.”




Launching the Label

Soon, artists were sending over their productions to ask if they’d consider releasing them. They weren’t sure how to go about it, but decided to do it anyway, and within a couple of months they had their own label with a full catalog of fresh D&B artists. Their first release came out in 2021 by a Czech artist called Junger, followed by a steady stream of releases every two months. As their roster of artists developed, so did the sound they were championing – a fresh take on D&B, ranging from liquid to technical to experimental.




“And now here we are in 2024 and we’ve got around 80 tracks on the label from like 35 nationalities,” Kenny says. “It was such an organic process. We weren’t thinking about what’s popular, just what felt right at each moment in time.”




Artistic Integrity

Kenny says label heads will always experience friction between releasing the music they like and releasing the music that’s popular. In The Lab Recordings always choose the former, and believe that’s why their label is standing the test of time and only growing in popularity. “Artistic integrity has been our biggest asset,” Kenny says. “We’re not putting out music to get numbers on SoundCloud. Being a label-owner is an abstract extension of being a DJ – you have your audience, you’re sharing music you hope they enjoy, but it’s not for their sake, it’s for yours.”




The label had some big wins in the last couple of years. They were nominated for Drum&BassArena’s Best Newcomer Label award in 2023, featured in UKF and played a slew of killer showcases at festivals across Europe. But their biggest achievement was opening Rampage’s 15th anniversary in February this year in Belgium’s Sportpaleis venue, the largest indoor bass music event in Europe. “It was a very big deal for us,” Kenny says. “I’d been watching their live stream every year without even remotely dreaming that I could play that stage. I’d never even thought that was possible.”




Looking into the Future

Looking ahead, In The Lab plans to keep expressing themselves through the medium they know best: D&B. They no longer run events but they’re still community-focused, and always aim to nurture their artists and encourage new ones to submit their tracks to the label – just as long as it’s progressing the sound. “Drum & Bass can be very formulaic,” Kenny says. “but it also has ample opportunity for unique, new, interesting ideas. We're not trying to change the world here. I'm just trying to share something interesting – something that you might not have experienced before.”

From Full Send to Full Recovery: Amsterdam’s Best Hangover Spots

Meet Pythius, the Netherlands-based producer fusing metal with Drum & Bass.

Erupting onto the scene with his Abandon EP on D&B label Blackout Music NL in 2014, Pythius has become a prominent name on the global D&B scene. He’s released two full-length albums and performed legendary sets at some of the world’s biggest events including Let It Roll Festival, Sziget, Pirate Station and Animals. He counts Black Sun Empire, Noisia, Ed Rush, Audio, The Prototypes, The Upbeats and Dirtyphonics as fans, and has become a spearhead of D&B sub-genre Neurofunk – a combination of two very different sounds. Today, we’ll learn more about Pythius’ unique take on D&B and his hope for the future of Neurofunk.



Metal Meets D&B

Pythius chats from his studio in Utrecht, the quiet Netherlands town where he was born and raised. His journey into D&B is somewhat unconventional. “I saw a Rammstein clip on TV and it went downhill from there really fast,” he says. “I got into the really extreme death and black metal stuff like Nile, Emperor, Immortal, the classic black metal bands. Maximum blast beats and guitars in your face.”

Then, his friends introduced him to Drum and Bass. "I was about 15 or 16, hanging out with some friends, and one of them showed me a track that connected with my love for metal," he says. “I’d got accustomed to that kind of energy and intensity in the music.” It reminded him of the music that played in the background of his favourite video game Resident Evil – and in that moment he opened the door to a new world of sound.



His journey into D&B began first with the discovery of other Utrecht D&B artists like Black Sun Empire, and then Europe-wide tours of D&B festivals where he got a taste for the full spectrum of the genre, and fell in love with the darkest corners of it.

Crafting a Career in Music Production

Pythius’s journey into professional music began with formal training at the Herman Brood Academie in Utrecht where he honed his technical skills, studying alongside the likes of Martin Garrix. "I graduated in 2014 and immediately immersed myself in the industry," he says. He bagged himself an internship with Black Sun Empire’s Blackout Music NL imprint where he learned the ropes of the music business while refining his craft.



Just like the rest of the D&B scene, the COVID-19 pandemic offered a big opportunity to slow down and focus on production. “It was heavy but it quietened everything down around me,” he says. “I have ADD so I get overwhelmed and it was nice to step back and work on engineering. My sound improved a lot in that time.”

The isolation allowed him to experiment more freely, and that’s when he laid the foundations for his second album Turmoil, released in 2023.



Pythius’ sound is as unique as it is extreme. He’s regularly booked to play metal festivals as well as D&B ones, and he feels that both genres share a similarly intense, visceral listening experience. He’s become well known for his progression of the D&B subgenre Neurofunk, a style characterized by its complex, dark, and technical sound design. "Neurofunk appeals to a more niche audience," Pythius says. “The sub-genre doesn’t really benefit from the global rave of D&B because the sound that’s popular right now is more mainstream. This stuff is harder and more extreme so it doesn’t reach a big audience.”



However, Pythius remains optimistic about its future, and says its current popularity could be a gateway for fans to explore deeper and more intricate styles.

Pythius often incorporates live instruments, particularly guitars, into his productions as a way to bridge his past with his present and set him apart from his peers. "I enjoy experimenting with metal elements within my tracks," he says.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Pythius

With each new release, Pythius continues to capture the essence of his influences while carving out a space for himself in the D&B realm. He just released part one of remixes of his Turmoil album, and he has shows coming up in Bratislava, Krakow, London and Budapest, as well as a ton more music in the pipeline. He thinks D&B is at a major crossroads, full to the brim with opportunities for innovation and exploration. "I think the fruits of the current popularity will eventually reach the darker subgenres," he says.



His dedication to blending the intensity of metal with the intricacies of D&B hasn’t just shaped his identity as an artist, but set a precedent for future experimenters.
