It’s 2am at Glasgow’s legendary Sub Club and drag queen Bimini Bon Boulash is behind the booth, playing hard, fast, bouncy techno to a sea of ravers. After dropping a track best described as volcanic, Bimini grabs the mic and struts into the center of the crowd. “Who wants to hear my new song?” She asks, to a response of bellows and screams. Bass pounds out the speakers as Bimini launches into their latest musical creation, fists pumping all around as they rap over a 4:4 techno beat.




This is the second time Bimini has performed for Polka Dot Disco Club, an inclusive, multi-genre event series that aims to empower FLINTA (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Non-binary, Transgender, and Agender) creatives in Scotland and beyond. Since its inception in 2019, they’ve hosted techno legend Sama’ Abdulhadi, Cici, HAAi, fka.m4a, and given dozens of FLINTA artists their first opportunities to play. They’ve teamed up with HE.SHE.THEY. on two occasions, often sell out The Berkeley Suite and Sub Club, and hold regular takeovers in bars, clubs, and rooftops all over the city.




Because of the sheer volume of events, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was run by a small army. But it’s actually nurtured by just one person – Frankie Elyse, DJ, producer, and 1/2 of DJ duo Kintra.




The idea originated in Frankie’s home town of Dundee, where she and her school friend Hannah Laing, a renowned DJ and producer, would DJ at Dundee University’s Student Union. “Then they asked me if I wanted to play all night long with a few pals,” Frankie says. “I thought it would be fun to make it a girls' night, but Hannah wasn’t available, and that’s when I realized there were no other women DJs in Dundee.”




So she got to work creating some. “I asked the union if I could do a free workshop series, and they let me use their facilities for four weeks,” Frankie remembers. “I ended up teaching six women how to DJ, and we all performed at a big party at the union on International Women’s Day.”




Then lockdown hit, and Frankie moved Polka Dot Disco Club online, inviting FLINTA artists to create mixes. And just as the world emerged from COVID, she moved to Glasgow, where many of the artists she taught to DJ also lived. “I started getting more into the Glasgow scene, and then I got the opportunity to have a residency at the Berkeley Suite, and then a few months later at Sub Club as well.”




She still hosts club nights in Dundee, most recently a venue takeover at Dundee Dance Event, where she performed with her twin sister under their moniker Kintra. “It was a purely Dundee line-up which was great,” she says. “It just shows there’s way more women, Trans, and non-binary folk DJing there now.”




A lot has changed since 2019, but Polka Dot Disco Club’s mission will always be to fight for equality in dance music. “Now, the challenge is to get more LGBTQIA+ folk on the line-ups,” she says. “Polka Dot isn’t a queer night, it’s an inclusive night. In an ideal world, we won’t have labels, and everybody will have the same opportunities, but we’re not there yet, so Polka Dot exists to facilitate that.”




Although they don’t currently book cis-men, they would be happy to in the future. “We need to make it normal to go into the club and see somebody that you maybe wouldn’t have seen 20 years ago behind the decks,” she says.




Frankie herself warmed up for Bimini tonight, playing the vibrant, upbeat house music she’s become known for in the city. Polka Dot Disco Club doesn’t take itself too seriously, making sure fun and accessibility are front-center of the experience. “Deep cuts and obscure tunes are important, but it's not as headsy as other nights,” Frankie says. “It’s just about having fun –I’ve definitely played Britney Spears edits a few times.”




Fun is a fairly air-tight summary of Polka Dot Disco’s Sub Club takeover tonight, clearly demonstrated by Bimini as they dance amongst the adoring crowd. And this is exactly the energy Frankie hopes to continue in the future. “I’d like to start a record label and release music from FLINTA artists,” she says. “I’d love to run a festival one day, put on events in London, Spain, Manchester, continue to run production and DJ workshops, and just make sure music is accessible to everybody.”

This Week’s Parties in Ibiza (June 12 - 18)

Ibiza’s reputation as the ultimate party island didn’t just happen overnight. For decades now, it's drawn electronic music lovers from every corner of the globe. But beyond the massive names and legendary clubs, something more curious has been happening on its sun-drenched dance floors, unexpected back-to-back DJ sets have surprised even the most seasoned clubgoers.



Some pairings looked odd on paper. Like putting oil and water in the same bottle and expecting magic. Yet somehow, that’s often exactly what happened. One moment you’d see a techno pioneer sharing the booth with a hip-hop icon. The next, a minimal house veteran spinning tracks shoulder to shoulder with a pop celebrity trying their hand at live mixing.



There’s a kind of electricity in these moments. The crowd doesn’t know what to expect, and neither do the DJs. Some of these sets defied genres entirely, blending sounds that were never meant to meet, but did. Others felt more like social experiments, placing people from different musical worlds in the same orbit for a night.



What ties it all together? Ibiza’s open-minded spirit. The kind that says, "Let’s see what happens if..." And what happens, more often than not, is something unforgettable.



Skepta B2B Green Velvet - ANTS Opening Party, Ushuaïa (2025)



On May 3, 2025, Ushuaïa Ibiza's ANTS "Metalworks" opening party featured a B2B set between UK grime pioneer Skepta and Chicago house legend Green Velvet. Skepta, known for his contributions to grime and recent forays into house music, teamed up with Green Velvet, a stalwart of the house and techno scenes. The collaboration was unexpected, bridging distinct musical backgrounds and generations.


Despite initial skepticism, the set was a resounding success. The duo delivered a high-energy performance that seamlessly blended their unique styles, creating a memorable experience for attendees. The official ANTS recap praised the set as an "unexpected collaboration" between "two artists operating at the very height of their skills".




Idris Elba B2B MK - Wild Corner, Hï Ibiza (2019)



In 2019, actor-turned-DJ Idris Elba joined forces with renowned house producer MK for a spontaneous B2B set in Hï Ibiza's unisex restroom-turned-club space, the Wild Corner. Elba, who had been steadily building his DJ credentials, and MK, known for his chart-topping house tracks, delivered an impromptu performance that captivated the intimate crowd.



The set showcased Elba's genuine passion for electronic music and his ability to hold his own alongside seasoned professionals. It became a testament to Ibiza's embrace of unexpected musical moments and the island's penchant for turning unconventional spaces into dance floors.




Robbie Williams' Lufthaus DJ Set – 528 Ibiza (2022)



In August 2022, British pop icon Robbie Williams ventured into the DJ realm with his electronic project, Lufthaus, at 528 Ibiza. Williams, more accustomed to stadium performances, found himself behind the decks, attempting to engage the crowd in a new role.



The experience was less than stellar. Williams admitted to feeling out of place, resorting to Googling "what do garage MCs say on stage?" during the set. The audience's lukewarm response and Williams' own discomfort led him to abandon the Lufthaus project shortly thereafter. Reflecting on the event, he candidly described it as "so awkward," underscoring the challenges celebrities face when crossing into the DJ world without the requisite experience.





Ibiza's dance floors have always been something of a testing ground - a place where DJs can take risks and the crowd actually roots for it. Those back-to-back sets? They’ve become a tradition of sorts. A mix of strange pairings, wild turns, and, every now and then, a moment that just works better than it ever should have.



Sometimes the sets feel like a perfect blend - like two people finishing each other’s musical sentences. Other times, it’s more like they’re speaking different languages entirely, and not even trying to translate. You’ll catch a grime MC tossing verses over silky house beats or a pop singer nervously queuing up vinyl beside a techno veteran who’s seen it all.



Even when it’s a bit of a mess, there’s still something honest about it. Something raw. Ibiza lets that kind of energy live. The island’s never been about staying in the lines, it’s about pushing boundaries, trying odd combos, and seeing what the crowd will move to.



At its core, it’s that spirit - open-minded, messy, fearless - that keeps people coming back. You never really know what you’re going to get. And that’s half the fun.

This Week’s Parties in Ibiza (June 5 - 11)

By the time Sunday rolls around in Ibiza, most places in the world are winding down. But on the White Isle, it’s just another chance to go out with a bang. For decades, Sunday has been one of the most hotly contested slots on the island’s clubbing calendar - an unlikely battleground that’s seen legendary residencies, iconic closings, and some of the most defining moments in dance music history. From foam parties and marathon sets to disco anthems and techno takeovers, Sunday has evolved into Ibiza’s spiritual finale - and the fight for its dominance reveals as much about the business of clubbing as it does about the culture.



Space Sundays: Where It All Began



The mythology of Sundays in Ibiza starts, as so many things do, at Space. In the 1990s, as most clubs shut their doors by Sunday sunrise, Space flung theirs open - quite literally. The famous terrace, planes flying low overhead, became a sacred dancefloor for sun-drenched marathon sessions. By 1999, British promoter Darren Hughes formalised the vibe with We Love Sundays at Space, a 22-hour weekly institution that ran until 2014. Multi-room, multi-genre, and relentlessly international, We Love was less a party and more a ritual. “It shaped the quintessential Ibiza we know,” said one retrospective, and it’s no exaggeration. Sundays at Space defined the rhythm of the island for 17 years.





Amnesia’s Foam Legacy and Local Roots



While Space pioneered the after-hours marathon, Amnesia carved its own Sunday niche with something entirely different: La Espuma. The foam party became an Ibiza rite of passage in the ‘90s and 2000s, attracting a mix of carefree tourists and Spanish locals looking to blow off steam after a week’s work. Its frothy chaos was matched with a soundtrack that strayed from underground cool, embracing pop, reggaeton and Eurodance. It may not have been the most purist affair, but La Espuma had staying power and mass appeal, and it filled Amnesia’s Sunday slot with volume and vibes.



Amnesia also championed local talent on Sundays. Parties like People from Ibiza spotlighted Balearic DJs like DJ Pippi and César de Melero, weaving together a distinctly Ibicenco identity amidst the influx of international acts. It was a smart cultural move that tied Sunday’s celebration to the island’s own roots.





Pacha’s High-Stakes Gamble



The Sunday slot grew in prestige through the 2000s, and nowhere was the competition more visible than at Pacha. In 2010, the club handed Sundays to Luciano’s Cadenza Vagabundos, a flamboyant, Latin-infused party that brought serious underground cred to a venue often seen as VIP-centric. But it was 2013’s pivot to Solomun +1 that really changed the game. What began as a gamble - a minimal techno DJ headlining alone, backed by just one guest each week - soon redefined the venue’s identity. It married Pacha’s sleek production with Solomun’s emotional sets, creating an intimate, musical experience that proved wildly successful. Over a decade later, Solomun +1 remains one of the island’s most beloved residencies, and Pacha’s flagship night.





The Glitterbox Effect and the Rise of Hï



When Space closed in 2016, there was a gaping hole in the Sunday market. But Glitterbox was ready. Originally launched by Defected in 2014, the disco-forward brand found a permanent Sunday home at Hï Ibiza (built on the former Space site) in 2017. Its ethos - glamorous, inclusive, joyful - offered a different kind of Sunday experience. Drag queens, funky house, and flamboyant dancers created a party that felt more like Studio 54 than Berghain. It resonated. Glitterbox became a cultural statement. “Sundays just got fiercer,” the tagline went - and they did.





UNVRS and the Future of Sundays



The battle for Sunday continues into the next era with the opening of UNVRS, the new “hyperclub” from the team behind Ushuaïa and Hï. To make an impact, they’ve turned to a legend: Carl Cox. His new residency, Carl Cox: The Reunion, marks a return to Sundays for the DJ who helped define Ibiza’s golden years.

For promoters, the move is strategic - pairing nostalgia with innovation, heritage with cutting-edge tech. With UNVRS now in the mix, Sundays have once again become a key strategic battleground for branding and bragging rights.





Why Sundays Matter



So why the fixation on Sundays? From a business standpoint, Sunday captures a unique demographic: weekend warriors staying through Monday, hospitality workers on their night off, and seasoned clubbers willing to go the distance. Promoters also eye the Sunday slot for closing parties, where a strong finale can cement a brand’s legacy.



Culturally, Sunday in Ibiza has always been about celebration and release. It’s when locals mix with tourists, when artists dig deep into their record bags, and when the island’s essence of freedom, unity and excess comes alive in its most distilled form.



And so the battle rages on. Not just for the best DJs or biggest production, but for the right to own that final, magical night - a night where the island doesn’t say goodbye, but one more time.

The Battle for Sunday: How Promoters Vied for Ibiza’s Final Party Slot

Pedro Maia, better known as Mochakk, has become one of the most talked-about names in house music over the past few years — and not by accident. Born in Sorocaba, Brazil, in 1999, Mochakk’s rise from bedroom beatmaker to international festival headliner has been fast but intentional. With his signature mullet, neck tattoos, sharp mustache, chunky chain, and wraparound sunglasses, Mochakk doesn’t just show up behind the decks — he owns the room the second he steps up. Watching him perform is like watching music come alive through his body: every beat, drop, and twist synced perfectly to his movement, like the tracks are wired directly into his bones. His stage presence is a huge part of what’s turned him into a standout in the industry, especially among dance music fans drawn to his mix of wild style, nonstop energy, and next-level tracklist knowledge.

With musical DNA in hip hop, funk, disco, and rock — and early days DJing underage parties in São Paulo — he’s made a name for himself with shapeshifting sets that throw down classic house, Brazilian rap, Latin heat, and whatever else keeps the dancefloor fired up (just ask anyone who lost it when “Da Fonk” hit on Nervous Records). A viral TikTok clip of his playful, dance-fueled spirit behind the decks pushed him into the spotlight, opening doors to major bookings at Circoloco (DC-10), Sónar, Coachella, and his own headline events. But what stands out most is how Mochakk has used that momentum to build something larger — whether it’s launching his own labels (Dogghäuz and MOTRAXX), opening his Sorocaba-based club OBLIQO, or developing the Mochakk Calling party series, which has sold out across cities like New York, Miami, and Lisbon.



His projects — the two-part Locomotiva Ibiza 2099 II EP on Circoloco Records and his most recent From the Stars EP — are prime examples of his ear for sampling, while his curated parties reflect a strong sense of visual and cultural identity, influenced by his background in fashion and his love of São Paulo’s urban spark.

In this interview, Mochakk dives into his early life, masterful production methods, and the surprising (and hilarious) stories from the road — including fans dancing with fish, themed ice cream truck pop-ups, and his ambitious vision for the Mochakk Calling festival. He also teases what’s ahead for his massive June 21 takeover at Brooklyn Army Terminal, a show he’s calling the biggest Mochakk Calling party yet — promising a night for the books against one of NYC’s most iconic open-air backdrops.







What was the turning point when you realized music was going to be your full-time path?



I fell in love with electronic music when I was around fourteen or fifteen. I was already copying beats I heard in hip hop tracks I liked, then I met my friend Cesar Nardini (he’s now my partner at our label, Dogghäuz Records, and our club in Sorocaba, OBLIQO). Back then, he was throwing these underage parties at a club in our hometown, and one day he asked me to help sell tickets. 



That small favor turned into something way bigger, and before I knew it, I was DJing at the parties myself. We’d leave school early and go to the club, and they’d open it up just for us so we could practice on the equipment. 



I kept going, kept learning, just practicing nonstop. Eventually, after a few gigs, I saved up enough money to buy a mini controller and started training at home every day. I completely fell in love with it. From there, things started moving fast… and somehow, this crazy passion turned into my full-time gig.



How did launching your label Dogghäuz change your perspective on producing and releasing music?



When I moved to São Paulo, I started going out a lot. It just became natural to hit a party, hear something crazy on the dancefloor, Shazam it, then go home and dig deep into what I’d found. I was constantly absorbing new sounds and trying to blend that vibe from the nightlife into what I was producing.



Launching Dogghäuz with my best friends shifted my whole perspective. Having our own label meant I could really put my creative vision out there — not just with my own tracks, but also in building something bigger with all the DJs and producers we think are really killing it in the Brazilian scene. It gives us the freedom to shape a sound, but also the chance to spotlight artists we believe in, since the label is invite-only, whether they’re sending me demos or people we want to work with directly. It’s about creating a space where all of that can come together.



Your sound is known for its variety — classic house, Brazilian rap, and tech-house. How do you decide which direction to take for each track?



For me, the job of a DJ is to surprise people, to show them something new, to curate and share music in a way that makes them feel something different. Back in the day, DJs got booked because they brought something unique to the table, something people hadn’t heard yet. I want to hold on to that purpose because that’s what pulled me into this in the first place. 



So when I’m working on a track, the direction I take really depends on what I’m feeling, what I’ve been listening to, and what I want to express in that moment. Sometimes it leans more into classic house, sometimes it’s Brazilian rap, sometimes it’s drum and bass or funk — it’s all about the energy.



How did growing up with funk, disco, and rock influence your approach to DJing?



If you only listen to one thing, your perspective gets too limited to one box. But when you open yourself up to different genres and really pay attention to the creativity and thought behind them, your whole musical world expands. That mindset helped me build a broader rhythm vocabulary, and that’s everything when you’re DJing. 



The more grooves you understand, the more you can connect with different crowds, blend unexpected elements, and keep things fresh. All those influences are still with me, and I think they show up in the way I build sets, read energy, and create flow on the dancefloor.



Circoloco at DC-10 is a milestone for any artist. What was your first time playing there like?



My very first time on the island was in 2022 — and it’s crazy that I was there as the DJ, not even as a partygoer. Playing at a legendary spot like DC-10 was completely insane; I was super nervous, actually. It’s one of those places you dream about, and suddenly I was on the line-up alongside people I’d looked up to for years — Seth Troxler, Dixon… just unreal. That moment really hit me differently. It felt like one of those milestones where everything you’ve worked for starts to make sense.



Mochakk Calling is more than just a party — it’s a full-on experience. How hands-on are you with the creative direction of those events?



Mochakk Calling actually came from one of the guys on the team. We needed a name and a concept for a party, and “Calling” just clicked — like calling up your friends to come along. It stuck, and from there, we realized we could have a lot of fun with it. The whole theme gave us room to play, not just with visuals, but even with how we write the copy and build the vibe around each event. 



I’m super hands-on with the creative direction. I’ve always been inspired by São Paulo’s industrial energy, and that influence runs through everything — from the visuals to the scenography to the venues. It’s all connected. For me, it’s not just about throwing a party; it’s about creating a full experience that feels intentional from start to finish.



The ice cream truck pop-up in NYC was wild. How did that idea come about?



When I think of NYC, I think of food trucks everywhere, so doing an ice cream truck pop-up just felt like the perfect surprise. It was summer, the vibe was right, and it felt like the ultimate treat. It was so much fun serving ice cream, chatting with people, just creating this unexpected little moment before the party even started. 



The whole idea was to make it more than just a show. I wanted it to feel like a full experience, something people would remember not just for the music.



You’ve thrown Mochakk Calling parties in cities around the world. Which city surprised you the most with its energy?



Each city brings its own vibe, so it’s hard to pick just one, but I was definitely surprised by how loud people get in Italy. They scream during the sets just like we do in Brazil, and I wasn’t expecting that energy to match so perfectly. It felt like home in a totally different place. We also just did Mochakk Calling in Miami and Chicago, and both of those were insane. The crowd in Miami was massive, and what blew me away was how many people knew the tracks… they weren’t just dancing, they were fully locked in, reacting to every drop.



The Brooklyn Army Terminal is a massive historical space. What can fans expect from this New York edition?



The Brooklyn Army Terminal just feels like the perfect spot for Mochakk Calling NYC. It’s got that raw, urban energy — gritty, open, with a rave vibe that lets the music and visuals hit hard. NYC is such a special city for me because it reminds me the most of São Paulo. Every time I’m there, I think about jazz and hip hop influenced by jazz, the ’90s and early 2000s sound. It fits the city’s massive, concrete jungle vibe. 





That kind of music is what I listen to a lot during the week when I’m home, and I try to bring those influences into my sets there. I’m really excited for this one — it feels like it’s going to be one of the biggest Mochakk Calling parties yet. Can’t wait to see how it all comes together in NYC!



You’ve been called a “music nerd” who would have been crate-digging if it were the vinyl era. What’s the most unexpected sample you’ve worked with?



At the last Mochakk Calling NYC, I dropped this strange, trippy opera track mixed into a house beat, and surprisingly, people were totally down with the weirdness. That kind of unexpected blend is what keeps things exciting for me. I also love sampling famous speeches. For example, I’ve got this unreleased track that features an excerpt from Leonardo DiCaprio’s United Nations speech on climate change — I actually dropped that one during my Cercle set in Seville.

Using samples like that adds a whole other layer. It’s powerful and thought-provoking, and it connects the music to something bigger. That’s the kind of stuff that gets me really hyped in the studio.



You’ve spoken about chopping samples in ways that make them feel like the original idea. Can you share a recent track where that really clicked?



The lead track from my EP with Ninja Tune, “From the Stars,” really shows this approach. It samples the RAH Band’s “Messages From the Stars,” and I was blown away by how the intro has this constant upward motion — it builds and builds until the bass drops with that huge synth. 



The original, though, is way slower and has that classic ’80s beat, which sometimes doesn’t flow with the other tracks I play at my shows. So I chopped and reworked it to keep the spirit and energy intact but make it fit the vibe I want on the dancefloor. That balance of respecting the original idea while making it fresh and coherent is what really clicked for me on this one.



Your visual aesthetic, especially with Mochakk Calling, is bold and unique. How much does fashion and design influence your music projects?



Fashion and design play a huge role in my music projects, especially with Mochakk Calling. I went to fashion school and have always loved street style and playful graphics, which I bring into the merch. My goal is to create a special-edition T-shirt for every Mochakk Calling party that gives a nod to the city we’re in. For example, last year in NYC, we dropped this wild white-on-black design with a glitchy, six-armed version of me holding old phones, pagers, and computers, with “Available 24/7” printed below. 



It’s all about capturing the vibe visually. When it comes to the parties themselves, one of my favorite things is being able to fully curate the music and the visuals to fit the vibe and look of the space. The energy and visuals of the venue really influence what I play — I feel like the music has to match the space so the whole experience hits all the senses. For me, that connection between sound and style is really cool to explore.



If you could throw a Mochakk Calling party anywhere in the world, with no budget restrictions, where would it be?



Honestly, I feel like that’s already happening soon with the very first Mochakk Calling Festival in Malta! It’s this incredible chance to bring a huge selection of music for people — something for every taste, but also plenty of room to discover new sounds. The festival’s happening in Malta from July 26th and 27th. I want the focus to be less about the big-name headliners and more about those moments where you discover music that sticks with you forever. 



We’ve got an amazing lineup with DJs I listen to myself, like Honey Dijon, Mall Grab, Bonobo, DJ Swisha, HAAi, Chaos in the CBD, Seth Troxler, Dixon… and we’re also bringing some of my favorite Brazilian DJs like BADSISTA, Cesar Nardini, Jay Mariani, Pricila Diaz, RHR — on this epic island in the summer. Throwing a two-day Mochakk Calling festival, not just a party, like this in such a paradise spot feels like a dream come true.



What’s the weirdest fan interaction you’ve had so far?



I actually talked about this in a video recently — one time I was playing a club in Rio on the beach, and someone went into the ocean, grabbed a big fish, and was dancing with the fish between their legs. That was pretty crazy!




You don’t miss a beat when you perform behind the decks. Is there anything you can say about how well you feel the music? Where does your rhythm stem from?



I don’t want to box myself into being just one thing. I want to be as expansive and limitless as the music I love. When I hear a track that moves me — whether it’s making me dance, sing, or just feel something deep — I let myself fully dive into it. That connection between me and the music is the same vibe I feel from the crowd in front of me.



For me, that’s where my rhythm comes from: the passion and authenticity of really loving the music, not just playing it. It’s that vibe I want to bring every time I’m behind the decks, and it’s what I hope sparks in everyone who’s at my shows.

This Week’s Parties in Ibiza (May 29 - June 4)

Few brands in dance music boast a relationship with Ibiza as rich and enduring as Defected. From its humble beginnings at El Divino to commanding the stage at Ushuaïa and returning to the legendary Pacha, Defected’s journey on the White Isle reads like a love letter to house music. Over two decades, it has not only soundtracked countless summers but reshaped the island’s dancefloor geography - moving east to west, north to south, and always deeper into the hearts of clubbers. This is the story of Defected Ibiza: A Journey Around the Island.



The Early Days: El Divino & the Birth of a Legacy



Defected made its Ibiza debut in 2003 with a residency at El Divino, a stylish marina-side venue in Ibiza Town. Back then, Defected in the House was a young brand with big ideas - soulful house, smiling faces, and a no-nonsense music-first policy. DJs like Junior Jack, Sandy Rivera, and Dimitri from Paris set the tone, quickly winning over an audience hungry for something authentic.



The energy was intimate and focused, a far cry from the bombast of the superclubs. But that was about to change.





The Pacha Years: Glamour and Growth (2005–2012)



In 2005, Defected moved just down the road to Pacha, beginning an eight-year residency that would become the label’s spiritual home. Every Tuesday, Defected in the House delivered upfront house music to Pacha’s disco ball-lit dancefloor, redefining glamour for a new generation of clubbers. It was a golden era: Kenny Dope, Martin Solveig, Bob Sinclar, David Morales, and countless more graced the booth, while vocal anthems filled the air until sunrise.



Pacha brought a glitzy edge to Defected’s soulful roots - VIPs rubbed shoulders with dancers, and Tuesday nights earned a reputation as the night for house purists and party lovers alike. But as the club’s direction shifted in 2012, Defected made the bold move to walk away.



Reinvention at Booom! and the Birth of Glitterbox



After parting ways with Pacha, Defected landed at the short-lived Booom! Ibiza in 2013. It was here that the brand experimented and evolved. Alongside its main Saturday night events, Defected introduced Glitterbox in 2014 - a flamboyant, disco-fuelled spin-off celebrating diversity, freedom, and fierce self-expression.



Glitterbox was an instant hit. With DJs like Todd Terry, Joey Negro, and Late Nite Tuff Guy on the decks - and dancers dripping in sequins - it brought a theatrical flair to Ibiza’s dance music scene. Although Booom! closed after just two seasons, Glitterbox had taken flight.



Superclubs and Strategic Moves (2015–2016)



In 2015, Defected returned to the big stage at Amnesia, sharing Tuesday nights with Together. Hosting the legendary Terrace while Together took over the Main Room, Defected brought in acts like MK, Claptone, and Dennis Ferrer, fusing classic and tech-driven house across genres and generations.



Meanwhile, Glitterbox found its new home at Space Ibiza, bringing disco back to the iconic Playa d’en Bossa venue. But by 2016, Space was preparing to close and Defected opted to pause its Ibiza club residency to focus on launching Defected Croatia and strengthening Glitterbox.



The San Antonio Era: Back to the Dancefloor (2017–2023)



In 2017, Defected returned to Ibiza with a mission: revive San Antonio's credibility. Landing at Eden, the brand ditched VIP pretensions and doubled down on its roots - affordable tickets, no-frills production, and high-calibre house music.



The result? A roaring success. Defected at Eden became essential for island workers and international fans alike. Artists like Sam Divine, Low Steppa, Claptone, and John Summit turned Eden into a hub for new and classic house lovers. The crowd was diverse, the vibe electric, and the message clear: In our house, we are all equal.



For six seasons (2017–2019, 2022–2023), Defected helped rebrand San Antonio as more than a pre-drinks pitstop - it was once again a nightlife destination. During this time, D4 D4NCE, Defected’s newest sub-label, also launched Monday daytime parties at O Beach, giving a platform to rising talent and establishing itself as a staple on the pool party circuit.





A New Chapter: Daylight at Ushuaïa (2024)



In 2024, Defected took on its boldest Ibiza residency yet - a Tuesday daytime slot at Ushuaïa Ibiza. Trading the intimacy of Eden for open-air festival energy, this 22-week run saw titans like Disclosure, MK, Kerri Chandler, and DJ EZ ignite the dancefloor before midnight curfews brought it to a close.



The scale may have grown, but the essence remained: quality house music, world-class lineups, and a commitment to unity on the dancefloor. It was a full-sun spectacle that showed just how far the brand had come - without ever losing its soul.





2025: Coming Full Circle with Pacha



Now, in 2025, Defected is coming full circle - returning to Pacha for the first time in over a decade. Every Thursday from 8 May to 2 October, the house faithful will once again file into Ibiza Town to see legends like Masters at Work, Dennis Ferrer, The Blessed Madonna, and Groove Armada tear up the club that once defined Defected’s golden years.



It’s a moment of reflection and celebration - 25 years of house music history, unity, and evolution. A brand that started with a simple message - great music, for everyone - has now carved its name into the island’s legacy.



Defected’s Ibiza story isn’t just about residencies. It’s about redefining what a clubbing brand can be: inclusive, evolving, and unafraid to take risks. Whether under the disco balls of Pacha, the lasers of Amnesia, or the sun-soaked stage of Ushuaïa, Defected has remained true to its ethos - uniting people through house music.



Ibiza wouldn’t be the same without it.

Defected Ibiza - A Journey Around the Island

Tucked into the hills just outside San Antonio, 528 Ibiza —sister venue to the legendary Pikes Ibiza—has redefined what daytime partying looks like on the island. With its open-air layout, tiered dancefloors, and panoramic views, the venue is now one of the leading destinations for music lovers seeking high-quality, sunlit sessions. In 2025, it’s stepping even further into the spotlight with a full summer program curated by Kaluki Musik and Electric Ibiza, offering twenty-two events across Fridays and Sundays that stretch from late May through early October.



This year’s calendar is packed with label showcases and brand collaborations from across the global dance spectrum. From Richy Ahmed’s Four Thirty Two and Archie Hamilton’s Microhertz to Josh Baker’s You&Me and Max Dean’s NexUp, the schedule showcases some of the most in-demand collectives and selectors on the circuit. Kaluki returns to host multiple Fridays throughout the summer, anchoring the series with heavyweight bookings and special guest appearances. The season launches with an opening party on May 30, headlined by Ilario Alicante and Fleur Shore, setting the tone for what’s to come.

528’s programming is deliberately spread across both the underground and more established ends of the house and techno spectrum. In June, All Day I Dream returns with Lee Burridge at the helm, while July sees Hot Since 82 bring his Knee Deep In Ibiza brand to the venue. August continues to raise the stakes with a full takeover from After Caposile featuring tINI and Saoirse, followed by a late summer set of events that include NexUp and a high-profile closing party from Do Not Sleep.



What defines the 528 experience isn’t just who’s on the lineup. It’s the balance between immersive production and the freedom of being outdoors, between daytime energy and sunset atmosphere. The natural surroundings, combined with a state-of-the-art soundsystem and attention to curation, make for parties that feel thoughtful without ever being overdesigned. It’s clubbing that breathes, in a setting that invites you to stay a little longer.



While the venue now operates under a new name and programming style, long-time Ibiza goers will remember its former life as the home of The Zoo Project. That weekly gathering—famous for animal-inspired costumes, tribal face paint, and its anything-goes spirit—was once the island’s most eclectic open-air escape. In many ways, the ethos of The Zoo Project lingers in the air. Though 528 is now more refined and internationally focused, the sense of freedom, outdoor celebration, and unfiltered connection to music still runs deep.



In a landscape where daytime events are becoming just as essential as the island’s storied nightclubs, 528 Ibiza has carved out a space of its own. Its evolution mirrors that of Ibiza itself—rooted in experience, but always moving forward. With this year’s lineup and vision, 528 is no longer just a venue; it’s one of the most anticipated destinations of the summer.

528 Ibiza: A New Era of Clubbing on the White Isle

Madrid’s Crusy has positioned himself as one of house music’s most consistent forces on dancefloors around the world. From releasing his breakout track “SELECTA” to now performing across major cities like Tokyo, Los Angeles, and Ibiza, Crusy’s momentum hasn’t slowed. His latest single, “Kiki,” continues that streak—already finding its way into sets from some of the scene’s biggest names. Dropping just in time for the season, “Kiki” lands perfectly with its blissful, summer-ready sound. With support from industry icons like Carl Cox, Dom Dolla, John Summit, and Fatboy Slim, his records have landed on respected labels including Toolroom, Defected, and Knee Deep in Sound. 

Ranked as the 26th top producer in the world in 2024—based purely on DJ support—Crusy’s catalog reflects a sharp understanding of what works in clubs: charged, floor-ready music that crosses stylistic boundaries. Tracks like “The Unknown,” “El Beso,” and “Bullerengue” have not only charted but stayed in rotation with top DJs around the world.

In this interview, Crusy opens up about his journey from his bedroom in Bilbao to half a million monthly Spotify listeners, his collaborations with names like Mark Knight and Tony Romera, and his minimalist but highly functional studio setup. Your debut track "SELECTA" was a massive success with support from major names like Carl Cox and Dom Dolla. What was the initial spark that led to creating that track?


I wanted to make a song that every DJ could play, regardless of the genre/style that that DJ was playing. Found a sweet spot between Latin House and high-energy house when Latin House was not even a thing worldwide, and translated it into a song I would play anywhere. I am so happy that all these amazing DJ names are still playing it nowadays, that’s what the song was made for.



You've released music on iconic labels like Toolroom, Defected, and Knee Deep in Sound. How do you decide which label is the right fit for each track?


I try to look for what that label is known for, whether it’s a sound in particular or a vibe, and I try to imagine the boss artist of the label playing my record out there. I’m a person that listens to music from the moment I wake up until I go back to sleep, so I do a lot of research—highly recommend that to any aspiring artist.



With shows spanning across cities like Madrid, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Bali, which crowd has surprised you the most in terms of energy and vibe?


I am very thankful to the crowd I have worldwide, it’s something I dreamt about when I was starting on this, but I must say LA, Toronto & Madrid are three cities that I have forever with me—great memories definitely there! Last year Avalon with Mark Knight, Tony & Martin Ikin was next level, and Toronto and Madrid are always amazing!



You were ranked as the 26th top producer in the world in 2024. What do you think contributed most to achieving that recognition?


That was something I thought about a lot. I was extremely thankful for that as it’s an award that can’t be bought, tricked or influenced in any way, as it measures the amount of times your music has been played by other DJs. I guess releasing records that are very effective on the dancefloor must have had the biggest impact on it alongside working with the best labels in the industry.



Collaborating with artists like Hugel, Mark Knight, and Tony Romera must bring different creative energies. How do you adapt your process when working with other producers?


It’s something that inspires me a lot, and something where I have taken a lot from for myself too. Every artist has their way to produce and I learn a lot from each one. Some are very technical, others very intuitive choosing sounds, others very good at marketing their records when they are out… I try to just let the energy flow and see where the path takes us!



"Bullerengue," "Fallin'," and "Things" on Defected brought you even more attention. What drew you to work with Defected, and what makes it different from other labels?


It is one of the most legendary labels ever, and I felt extremely proud to have released a few records with them. "Bullerengue" especially, was released on vinyl in the collector’s edition of their 25-year anniversary, which is a fantastic honor taking into consideration the level of names that have released at Defected.



You’ve now got over 500,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. How does seeing that number influence your approach to making music?


Spoke with my mom about this last week, and it feels like a lot to me. I’m an artist that started from nowhere in my bedroom at my parents’ house in Bilbao, so having half a million people listening to my music every month feels highly overwhelming to me. Thanks to everyone out there listening to my music!



What’s your studio setup like? Any piece of gear you can’t live without?


My studio is very simple actually. I know my room very well and have been making music for 13–14 years, so that helps you know when something is sounding good and when it is not. If I had to highlight something, that would be my speakers. I highly miss them while I am making music on the road. They are nothing really expensive, a pair of Focal Alpha80, but I think there is nothing close out there when comparing them with other similar budget speakers.



When you’re not touring or in the studio, how do you decompress and find inspiration for your next project?


I love to work out and cars. Sometimes I just go to the gym, drive one of my cars and enjoy that moment. I like to see my family and friends too and laugh for some time, that is one of the best treatments out there!



Is there a specific genre or style outside of house music that you’d like to explore in the future?


I listen to a lot of different genres! I vary into rock / alternative rock from the 2000s so don’t be surprised if I mix or co-produce something in the future!




You’ve toured cities all around the globe. Any unexpected travel stories that still make you laugh?


I have too many stories, but most of them can’t be told hahahaha. I remember once I woke up in an earthquake in Japan. It was very scary but now I laugh about it, could have been terrible but luckily nothing happened and it’s another story to write in my memories someday.



If you had to choose just one city to perform in for the rest of your career, which one would it be and why?


Couldn’t do that, every place gives you certain vibes and I could not get rid of them.



House music is constantly evolving. What do you think is the next big shift in the scene?


I am seeing House coming back. Hard Techno and Afro House have been dominating the scene for so long but I am seeing some of the biggest artists in the scene playing House again, and those crowds need to evolve and that usually makes them go back to House. That’s my bet!



What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from a fellow artist?


Don’t lose time trying to please people that would never pay a ticket to see you.

Which track of yours would you consider your secret weapon during a live set?


"Pills." Such a special track.



Would you rather only play sunrise sets for the rest of your life or only play afterparties?


Sunrise, definitely.

This Week’s Parties in Ibiza (May 22 - 28)

Since the 1990s, Ibiza has been the undisputed capital of clubbing, but its most legendary parties have always been about more than just music. On this island, a night out becomes a full-scale theatrical experience - complete with costumes, extravagant set designs, and themes so wild they’ve become the stuff of nightlife legend. From hedonistic circus shows to psychedelic foam pits, here’s a look at the most outrageous themed nights to ever light up the White Isle.



Manumission - Hedonism Unleashed

No list would be complete without Manumission, the party that redefined outrageousness in the ‘90s. Held at the colossal Privilege club (now fully transformed into UNVRS), it was part erotic circus, part theatrical mayhem, and all about freedom - literally, as the name means "release from slavery." It wasn’t unusual to see aerial performers, live sex acts, and everything in between, all in front of 10,000 wide-eyed clubbers. The night didn’t end at the club either: afterparties continued at the Manumission Motel, where anything could - and often did - happen. It was less a party, more a wild, surreal lifestyle manifesto.



La Troya - Ibiza’s Camp Carnival

Equal parts flamboyant, fabulous, and filthy, La Troya has long been one of Ibiza’s most irreverent nights. Originally known as La Vaca Asesina (The Killer Cow), this LGBTQ+ institution found its home at Amnesia, then Space, Club Chinois and now Playa Soleil. Hosted by iconic drag performer Baby Marcelo, La Troya is a chaotic celebration of sexual freedom, gender play, and joyful rebellion. With weekly themes that veer from divine to depraved - think fetish nights, tribal fantasies, and parody politics - La Troya’s costumes and characters are among the most eye-popping on the island. If Manumission was raw hedonism, La Troya is pure, glitter-soaked theatre.





Flower Power - Psychedelic Nostalgia

A little tamer but no less iconic is Flower Power at Pacha. This long-running night takes clubbers on a trippy ride back to the ‘60s and ‘70s, when peace signs, paisley, and rock ’n’ roll ruled. Think John Lennon glasses, VW Beetles parked inside the club, and go-go dancers channeling Woodstock energy. The production is immersive - each corner of the club drenched in retro visuals, vintage posters, and kaleidoscopic light shows. And when a Lennon-Yoko impersonator floats over the crowd on a bed during “Imagine,” you know you’re in Ibiza, where even nostalgia gets a theatrical upgrade.





La Espuma - The OG Foam Party

You haven’t truly done Ibiza until you’ve danced through a wall of foam at La Espuma, Amnesia’s signature foam party. Since the early '90s, this wet and wild event has transformed the dancefloor into a soap-slicked playground. At its peak, industrial cannons launch torrents of foam, burying clubbers in bubbles and creating what feels like an underground rave inside a car wash. It’s ridiculous, messy, and completely liberating - especially when the music shifts from underground house to guilty-pleasure anthems like “Barbie Girl.” Expect to lose your shoes and your dignity - but gain a night you’ll never forget.





elrow - Confetti Overload

In the 2010s, elrow emerged as the new king of immersive party madness. Born in Barcelona, and many years under its belt at Amnesia before debuting in UNVRS this year, elrow combines circus energy, Burning Man aesthetics, and club-kid imagination. Every edition is built around an over-the-top theme: haunted carnivals, trippy jungles, psychedelic dreamscapes. Confetti blasts every five minutes. Costumed performers climb through the crowd. The set design looks like a Tim Burton acid trip. What makes Elrow truly wild is the way it turns the entire club into a living, breathing fantasy land. You don’t just go to elrow - you’re consumed by it.





SuperMartXé - High Glamour, Higher Drama

If you wanted Vegas-style spectacle in Ibiza, SuperMartXé at Privilege was your ticket. Known for its jaw-dropping production and high-glam themes, this party served up weekly extravaganzas featuring dozens of dancers, fire-breathers, and set designs that looked straight out of a West End show. One week it was a futuristic sci-fi fantasy; the next, a Moulin Rouge-inspired burlesque blowout. Even Paris Hilton got in on the action, DJing special foam-and-diamonds editions. With EDM anthems blaring and a rotating cast of performers, SuperMartXé was Ibiza’s answer to Broadway - if Broadway wore nothing but glitter and feathers.





The Zoo Project – Party Like an Animal

Finally, The Zoo Project brings wildness back to its roots - literally. Held at an “abandoned zoo” just outside San Antonio, this daytime event invited clubbers to unleash their inner animal. The dress code? Body paint, fur, feathers, or full-on animal cosplay. Stages are tucked into old enclosures, performers prowl the grounds, and the music leans toward underground house and techno. Unlike the superclubs, Zoo Project’s charm lies in its raw, DIY spirit - part jungle rave, part tribal gathering, and all kinds of outrageous.





From floating beds to flooded dancefloors, Ibiza’s themed nights are immersive worlds that invite you to lose your mind, your inhibitions, and sometimes your clothes. The music may set the mood, but it’s the wild themes, costumes, and jaw-dropping production that turn a great night into an unforgettable spectacle. In Ibiza, the more outrageous, the better.

The Most Outrageous Themed Nights in Ibiza’s Clubbing History

In our Ones To Watch series, we spotlight exciting new producers who are shaking up the game and progressing dance music culture while they do it.




British DJ and producer Yves Tomas is turning heads with his genre-bending club-bass-grime hybrid productions and creative DJ sets. He grew up in Saint Pauls, an outer suburb of Bristol, home to a vibrant and multicultural community. That’s where he soaked up the sounds of reggae, dancehall and raggae, thanks in part to St Paul’s Carnival, an annual festival celebrating Caribbean culture.




He started going to raves and free parties “way too young,” according to Yves. “I was the baby in the coat pile,” he laughs. “It was a proper free-range upbringing.” But it also informed his eclectic music taste and ability to harness underground energy in his productions. Now, he’s one of the UK’s most accomplished artists, having worked with grime artists like Ruff Sqwad, Tinchy Stryder, Giggs, and Frisco, and engineering vocals for global pop acts, all while releasing his own tracks on labels like Rekids and Hypercolor. Today, he chats through his early experiences in the rave, his penchant for 140 and grime, and the art of moving at his own pace.




Bristol to London, Tinchy to Rihanna




Yves grew up surrounded by music and community, so it wasn’t long before he began his own musical journey. “In secondary school I was going to Rooted Records with Tom Peverelist on my lunch breaks and saving up to buy a record every week,” he says. “I was picking up all the Punch Drunk stuff like Guido’s “Mad Sax”, and that era of 140 lefty dubstep that formed UK techno as we know it today.”




At the same time, Yves was neck deep in UK grime. “I’d pick up really obscure dub releases and buy Rude Kid’s “Are U Ready”, so bridging a gap between the two has always been my interest.”




When Yves moved to London at age 15, he dove head first into the local scenes there, landing experience at Soho Radio and then getting a job engineering for Tinchy Stryder and the Ruffsqwad crew. “It ended up being every other MC that passed through which was quite a few,” he says. “I did that for a couple of years and then went to Wendy House Studios, which is a hit-factor style environment,” he says.




Yves’ first call-up was Rihanna, which was exciting even though she didn’t turn up. “So that caliber of artist,” he says. “I was there for a couple of years, making my own music, engineering here and there, when an ex-girlfriend sent some tunes of mine to Radio Slave,” he says.



Around this time, he scored a short film called “Temper” for Nowness and created three productions for Holzweiler’s runways, which sparked a worldwide trend of underground producers making music for fashion houses.




He’d been making tunes in private, unsure if he wanted to send them out. But Radioslave responded immediately and asked if he could release them. “So he started the ball rolling, and it took two years for it to come out, and then it was smack-bang in the middle of COVID.”




Early Releases




As a shy kid who moved around a lot, Yves found production instantly appealing. “I wasn’t such a big talker,” he says. “I moved to lots of different schools, and I think that meant a part of me had gone inward, so realizing that I could make myself heard without having to talk was really attractive to me.”




He’d been plugging away at production for many years, but it wasn’t until 2020 that he felt ready to step into the spotlight. “I had to kind of experience and go through and figure out life before I could take flight,” he says




Yves’ Pilot EP came out on Radioslave’s Rekids in May 2020, and instantly won industry attention, especially from the heads. “It was really a producer EP,” he says. “It wasn’t about Spotify numbers. The record sold out, but the aim of it was to show my technical side.”




That won him instant respect in underground circles, and set the groundwork for what came next. He released tracks and EPs on Pyramids of Mars, Interlink Records and Rinse, but feels it’s only in the last two years he’d stepped into his full potential. “I’ve gone full-tilt - it feels like I’ve done the work now,” he says. “Before I wasn’t ready, and it’s tempting to force it when you’re young and if you have the talent, and people are giving you opportunities. I’m in a much better position to be present for it now and make the best of it.”




Plans for the Future




Yves’ artistry treads the line between low-tempo and experimental and bass-heavy club bangers. It’s a balancing act that very few artists could navigate, but Yves seems to do so with ease. That’s because there’s a collective energy that runs through his music – all of it embraces the unexpected, pushes boundaries and speaks straight to our emotions.




His 2024 Temper Ost EP packaged up his composition work for his Nowness film to create eight meticulously designed, ethereal tracks, while his PHRIDGE EP, out the same year, showcased a totally different creative spectrum, best described as deconstructed grime, breaks, and UKG.




Yves plays with the peripheries and boundaries of club music and underground culture with “The Original,” his latest release, out on Hypercolor in May 2025, marrying his penchant for left-field dub, grime, and UK bass. Ones To Watch: Yves Tomas

If you've spent any time on the dancefloor lately, there's a good chance you've moved to the sounds of Luke Alessi. If you’re a house music enthusiast, there's a high likelihood you have a track or two by the Australian sensation in your playlist. His music has been popping up everywhere—from underground clubs to major festivals—with releases on labels like Life & Death, Rose Avenue, and Watergate. His late 2024 track After Five became an instant go-to, lighting up clubs across the globe. For Luke, it wasn’t some calculated hit; it was just another idea that came together quickly, built around a groove that simply felt right.

Luke’s artistic flow is all about riding the groove. Sometimes it starts with a hook—maybe a synth line, a drum groove, or even a bass loop that just sticks. He even finds inspiration in the most unexpected places, like Donkey Kong Country and Mario Kart soundtracks. It’s that blend of nostalgia and forward-thinking that keeps his tracks fresh. His side project notwithoutfriends, with longtime mates William Kiss and Jordan Brando, is much the same—just good friends making music, throwing parties, and keeping things real. No egos, just pure fun.



In 2024, Luke took his sound international, hitting venues like Space Miami, The Brooklyn Mirage, and Pacha Ibiza. He capped off the year at Strawberry Fields, supporting Solomun at The Wool Store, bringing it back to where it all began. It’s been a wild ride, but it’s clear he’s only getting started.

We caught up with him to chat about his session work, wild tour stories (including a raccoon stealing his guacamole in Tulum), and what’s coming up next for him and notwithoutfriends. Dive into the full interview below.



When kicking off a new track, what's usually your first step?



It changes all the time, but usually, I start with the hook. It could be a synth, vocal, bass line, or even a drum groove that has some tonal element to it. If I find a loop that just hits the spot—something I could listen to on repeat for ages—then I know I’ve got a good base. I’ll build everything else around that.




What's a surprising or quirky influence that’s found its way into your sound?



I’m really inspired by '90s video game soundtracks. In particular, Nintendo games like Donkey Kong Country and Mario Kart. I’ve actually sampled these quite a bit in the past and still do. They just take me back to such a nostalgic, happy place and seem to work in my productions.



Any favorite moments or funny stories from playing some of the iconic venues you've visited?



Actually, something crazy happened to me recently after a set I played in Tulum. I was back at my hotel room with a friend, having a beer on the balcony, and I heard the screen door to my room open. I turned around to find a raccoon trying to break in and steal my guacamole from my bedside table. Cheeky bugger! I ended up leaving it out the front for him because I felt bad.




How have collaborations with friends like Chloé Caillet or DJ Tennis shaped your artistic flow with music?



Overall, I’ve loved it. Collaborating with other artists always pushes me outside my comfort zone. Chloé used to be in a band and comes from a more traditional songwriting background, so she has taught me a bit about traditional pop structure and how to integrate that into dance music, which has been valuable.



DJ Tennis, on the other hand, has this mad-scientist approach in the studio where he’ll throw something completely unexpected into the mix—mucking around on random bits of hardware, playing with FX pedals and synths—and suddenly, the track takes on a whole new life form. Before you know it, inspiration strikes.




"After Five" blew up—did you feel it would be a hit while making it, or was the success a bit of a surprise?



Ummmmm... not really. The record came together quite fast, and I just thought, “Oh, this will be a fun, loopy, disco groover that will be fun in the clubs.” I guess in that sense I knew it would be functional on the dance floor, and “functional” generally means it gets played, but you never really know how people will react. Then I started getting messages from other artists and DJs I really respect, asking for the track, and I thought, “Okay… maybe this one’s got legs.”




What’s special to you about working with Life & Death Records?



They genuinely feel like family to me. DJ Tennis is a true friend who helps support me in so many ways beyond just releasing with the label. Musically and artistically, they give me complete freedom. They’re not looking for a particular sound or aesthetic—just art that feels fresh and authentic. That kind of trust makes a huge difference as an artist.





What’s one festival or venue you’re dying to perform at but haven’t yet?



Ooft, that’s hard to pick! I’d say clubs and rooms like Robert Johnson, Panorama Bar, and DC-10 Circoloco—all would be a dream for sure!




With your side project notwithoutfriends, what’s the best part about collaborating closely with friends?



It just feels effortless. No egos, no overthinking (a lot of blunt honesty)—just making tunes and throwing parties with your best friends the way we’d want to experience them. Our Heide Sculpture Park show was a perfect example of that energy.




What's your secret to staying creative and healthy when you're always on the move?



I try to get in the ocean or a body of water whenever I can. It resets everything. Also, eating properly on tour is a struggle, but if I can get a place with a kitchen, then I love to cook. Every chance I get to eat real food and know exactly what is going into my body, cooking myself is the only way to do it.




How do you keep up with fresh music trends without losing your own style?



I listen to a lot of stuff outside of club music—jazz, weird ‘70s records, film, and video game scores. That way, I’m influenced by more than just what’s trendy at the time.




Any new or upcoming artists you’re super excited about right now?



William Kiss and Jordan Brando are doing some wild stuff right now, but I’m biased because we’ve been making music together for years. But honestly, I think they inspire me more than anyone. Also, Demi Requismo and D-stone are making some heat and almost always feature in my DJ sets.




If you could swap lives with another DJ or producer for a day, who would you choose and why?



Again, so tough, but I would have to say Four Tet. Not so much musically, but just his range and general ethos on music and the way he views the industry really inspires me a lot. He’s not afraid to just make music as he feels. Sometimes it could be an ambient track, next a full underground club record, then he’s collaborating with a pop artist. There seems to be this creative freedom and output that is so broad yet super authentic, and his fans just accept and appreciate it. That’s honestly what I want to strive towards as an artist.



What is something meaningful to you, but not to others?



Quite often, I’ll underlay my tracks with a field recording of something that was happening in my life at the time I came up with the idea or was writing the track. It could be while I’m at the shops, in the park, at a café—whatever it is, I’ll put it so low in the background that it’s often inaudible to the listener. But it just kind of laces the track with the energy and vibe of the time I wrote it.




Lastly, what’s one random talent or hobby you have that fans might be surprised to hear about?



I can do some pretty good voice impressions—Dumbledore and David Attenborough, to be specific (although they are pretty much the same).

The island’s most spiritual dancefloor experience returns as Black Coffee launches his seventh season at Hï Ibiza on Saturday, May 17. A cornerstone of the island’s nightlife since 2017, Black Coffee’s residency is renowned for its deep, Afropolitan house rhythms and immersive production.

This Week’s Parties in Ibiza (May 15th - May 21st)

Tucked at the edge of Ibiza Airport’s runway, DC10 Ibiza is one of the most iconic and uncompromising clubbing institutions on the planet. While the island’s superclubs opted for opulence, DC10 built its legacy on raw energy, musical purity, and a defiant underground spirit. Its terrace has become sacred ground for both dancers and DJs, with jets thundering overhead as the party booms below. But long before global acclaim, world tours and Circoloco t-shirts worn across continents, DC10 was a humble farmhouse-turned-bar, an outsider in the Ibiza clubbing ecosystem.



The story begins in 1989, when Spanish brothers Antonio “Sito” Lara and Deogracias Lara Moreno transformed a rustic roadside venue near the airport into a live music spot. They named it DC10, referencing the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 aircraft that often roared above. For nearly a decade, it remained a local favorite - a casual bar with live performances and a laid-back vibe.





Then, in 1999, everything changed.



That summer, two Italian partygoers-turned-promoters, Antonio Carbonaro and Andrea Pelino, saw a gap in the island’s programming. Monday mornings were quiet. Space’s marathon Sunday terrace had wrapped up, but the island’s ravers weren’t ready to sleep. So, the duo approached the Lara brothers with a radical idea: an after-hours party with no sponsors, no glitz, and no VIPs. Just music, madness, and freedom.



They called it Circoloco - Italian and Spanish for “crazy circus.” It was a name that captured the spirit perfectly. And it would become the club’s first, and most important, residency.



The Birth of Circoloco and the DC10 Identity

The first Circoloco took place in July 1999. It was free to enter, ran from sunrise to late afternoon, and welcomed just 80 people on the terrace. There were no international headliners, no advertising, and barely any infrastructure. But word spread like wildfire. By the end of that summer, Circoloco had grown into one of the island’s best-kept secrets, a magnet for workers, DJs, and ravers chasing something more authentic.



From the very beginning, Circoloco wasn’t just another party on a party island. It was a philosophy. With the motto “No Soul for Sale,” it rejected the mainstream commercialization creeping into Ibiza. While other clubs chased big-name lineups and champagne tables, DC10 and Circoloco focused purely on the dancefloor. The music was deep, tribal, and cutting edge - house and techno that felt intimate yet powerful.





As Circoloco’s popularity exploded, Mondays at DC10 became sacred. Within a few years, the club had outgrown its modest origins, drawing hundreds (and then thousands) of partygoers each week. Yet, it remained firmly underground in spirit, often operating in defiance of licensing restrictions and legal pressure from local authorities.



The First Residents: Laying the Foundations

Behind the decks in those formative years were a group of DJs who would go on to define the DC10 sound and spirit. These were not international stars at the time. They were selectors trusted by the Circoloco founders - artists who understood the assignment: keep it real, keep it deep, and make people dance until the sun went down.



Tania Vulcano was the first name on the Circoloco flyer - and she would become its first true resident. Born in Uruguay and based in Ibiza, Tania brought a hypnotic blend of tribal house, minimal rhythms, and groove-laden selections that made her synonymous with the terrace. Her sets were a masterclass in progression, often stretching into marathon sessions. Today, she’s affectionately known as the “First Lady of DC10.”





Alongside her was Cirillo, a Roman DJ with a gritty techno sensibility and serious underground credentials. Cirillo held down the club’s main room, delivering raw, no-compromise sets that shaped the darker side of the Circoloco sound. His chemistry with Tania, balancing terrace euphoria with main room intensity, became a blueprint for DC10’s musical duality.



José de Divina, a Spanish DJ with a deep house background, added a soulful groove to the early lineup. His ability to ease the crowd into the day, whether opening the party or keeping energy flowing into the afternoon, helped define the Circoloco flow.



Other early contributors included DJ Bruno and Fabio (also known as System of Survival), who played key warm-up sets week after week. Over time, new residents joined the ranks: Luciano, Loco Dice, Clive Henry, and Dan Ghenacia - each bringing their own style while embracing the Circoloco ethos. Some of them, like Loco Dice and Luciano, would go on to become global headliners, but all credited DC10 as the place that gave them artistic freedom and trust.





The Impact and Evolution

By the early 2000s, Circoloco had transformed DC10 from a roadside bar into an international phenomenon. Yet, the core elements remained: no over-the-top décor, no bottle service, and no VIP booths. The club’s stripped-back layout, combined with its raucous terrace and thumping main room, became the perfect canvas for its residents to experiment and evolve.



In 2006, a roof was finally added to the terrace. In 2010, DC10 introduced a second weekly party called Pandemonium, led by some of the original Circoloco residents including Tania Vulcano. And in 2012, a new generation arrived with Paradise, a Wednesday residency spearheaded by Jamie Jones - himself a DJ who rose through the DC10 ranks.





But through all of these changes, Circoloco’s Monday slot has remained untouched. It is, quite literally, the heartbeat of DC10.



Legacy of the Early Residencies

The first residencies at DC10 did more than define a party - they defined a culture. The DJs who took a chance on an obscure Monday morning party helped craft a musical identity that now stretches across continents. They proved that underground music, when presented with integrity, could compete with - and even eclipse - the biggest names on the island.



More than two decades later, those early years are still spoken about with reverence. The freedom. The madness. The music. The moments when sunrise became sunset, and the party never seemed to end. DC10 and its original residents didn’t just make Mondays matter - they made history.

DC10 Ibiza: The First Ever Residencies

In our City Beats series, we explore underground scenes in cities worldwide. This week, we’re spotlighting Bogotá, Colombia, and its thriving drum and bass scene.




Colombia’s capital city is home to 8 million people—and it seems as though about half of them are involved in the drum and bass scene. Bogotá’s D&B underground is thriving, with festivals like RE.SET, Radikal Styles, and 420 Bogotá laying the foundation for new artists to flourish and international artists to let loose.




Collectives and sound systems like Autonotek, Liquid Mood, Womandbass, and Bogotrax have built thriving communities, and put Colombia firmly at the forefront of Latin America’s electronic underground.




From Europe to Latin America




Colombia’s D&B scene started as an offshoot of Europe’s. Back in the ‘90s, when the genre was setting Europe’s underground alight, a crew of disillusioned French ravers relocated to Colombia. They were sick of the heavy policing of free parties in Europe and the routine suppression of rave culture. So they brought the scene to Colombia, introducing their breakneck beats, wild parties, inclusive community, and innovative approaches through free raves on the outskirts of Medellín and Bogotá.




“These French guys brought their vinyl, their music, and started to make the free parties,” says BRAIN, a D&B producer from Bogotá. “It was very special, because it was really underground, really DIY, really alternative and deviant from society.”




Bogotá’s D&B Revolution




If that planted the seed, then it fully blossomed when Jairo Vargas co-founded RE.SET, Bogotá’s longest-running drum & bass event and label. Vargas grew up between Colombia and the U.S., where he soaked up NYC’s house and techno scenes.




It was the late ‘90s, and Vargas was determined to bring the culture back to his home city. Back then, records were hard to come by, and he returned to Bogotá with an extensive collection. That led to the founding of Phono Lab in Bogotá’s Zona Rosa neighborhood, a record store that soon became an influential electronic music hub. For over a decade, they supported the local scene while connecting communities through music and events.




Phono’s events soon expanded from the more popular sound of techno to the more underground Drum & Bass. “Drum and bass didn’t fit in with the style of Techsound, but we knew the city wanted it. So myself and DJ Sebass, who is now known as Colombia’s drum & bass Godfather, set up RE.SET,” said Vargas in a 2019 interview with Bandcamp. “There were a few nights here for the sound, but no one was doing it seriously, with professional production and international acts.”




Local Talent, Global Reach, and Community Impact




The first major RE.SET event was in 2006, but they’d been testing the waters with smaller D&B events. The first European artists to travel to Bogotá to play a D&B event were Silver (from UK trio North Base), and Drumsound. They were blown away by the crowd’s wild energy, lack of self-consciousness, and gratitude. Since then, that energy has spread like wildfire, with D&B events in Bogotá every single weekend and a flourishing scene of homegrown talent.




That includes artists, collectives, club nights, and sound systems such as SINTESIS, Zipaquirá!, Stxp UP Soundsystem, La Modular, Phonologia, Exophono, Silentzcorp, Inbassion and many more.




The womanandbass collective are championing women in the scene, and D&B artists from across the globe are itching to play some of the city’s underground festivals. Artists like DJ Sebass, Vargas, and BRAIN are teaching Bogotá’s youth how to DJ and produce, and every time a DJ comes from abroad they ask them to create a masterclass to give back to the community. “That’s my engine that keeps me moving,” says BRAIN. “There are many people with way more talent than me in Colombia, but they don't have the opportunities, so I'm opening the doors for those people.”

City Beats: Bogotá

Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi Racecourse recently pulsed with raw energy as Lollapalooza unfolded its sonic spectrum: electronic dance music, rock, and hip-hop rippled across stages. On the main dance music stage, Grammy winner Zedd drew thousands into ecstatic sync. But for the purists—those quiet rebels chasing authenticity—the true pilgrimage led to DJ Anushka. Her set is a hypnotic collision of electro jolts and restless grooves, delivered with surgical precision that leaves its imprint long after the last bassline fades. In a landscape often driven by formula, Anushka is something else entirely. Her defiance isn’t loud, but it’s deep—and it comes from somewhere. A quiet storm shaped by cities, silence, and sound.



Anushka Nadia Menon’s sound is rooted in many places, none of them accidental. Raised in Muscat, she absorbed the intricate pulses of Middle Eastern rhythm. In Melbourne, the 90s hip-hop grit and the ache of R&B left their imprint. But it was India’s shadowy electronic music underground that truly lit the fuse. There, in the warehouses and half-lit basements of India’s sonic underbelly, Anushka didn’t just find sound—she found purpose. But music wasn’t her first rebellion.



Before music stepped forward and claimed her, Anushka had already reshaped another world. As one of India’s most sought-after fashion photographers, she was shooting for Apple, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, GQ, and Rolex before her twenties had time to settle. But her photos were never just beautiful; they were images with weight—subversive, cinematic, and intensely engaged with the tension between surface and truth. Her aesthetic is unapologetic. And still, beneath the applause, something was brewing louder than the shutter. A hum, a tremor. Music, rising like a secret she could no longer keep.



In 2015, she teamed up with her friend Smita as Anushka + Agent, spinning SupaFly nights drenched in 90s hip-hop and R&B. By 2017, she stepped out solo, diving headfirst into darker waters: electro, drum and bass, and breakbeats with teeth. Her 2019 debut single "Falling," a collaboration with Sid Vashi, was all silk and steel: soft vocals over crisp percussion. Then came "Karma," which was a bit harder, and "Take," a drum-and-bass missile about online chatter that is becoming increasingly toxic by the day. Each track dug deeper—part protest, part seduction, all edge.



Onstage, she’s a force to be reckoned with—pure voltage in motion. Whether she’s commanding Burning Man’s dust-streaked expanse, Magnetic Fields’ sun-scorched forts, or Boiler Room India’s sweat-soaked floors, her sets erupt with precision and purpose. Drum and bass collides with disco’s neon shimmer, electro snarls melt into the deep, rolling pulse of house, and progressive peaks crash down like waves. Every transition lands with impact. Every drop feels earned. With razor-sharp control and a rebel’s instinct, she somehow manages to transform every musical gig into a seismic ritual.



Her inspirations are as layered as her sound. Vocally, she draws from the ethereal grit of FKA Twigs, the smoky intimacy of Sabrina Claudio, and the anthemic power of Florence + the Machine. Behind the decks, it’s Gwen Stefani’s fierce playfulness, Cameo Blush’s bright cuts, and 8 Bit Culprit’s retro-modern magic. She surfs genres with ease: disco, house, electro, drum and bass—all laced with a 90s rave undercurrent, always filtered through her own raw lens.



Now based in Goa—the global epicenter of the psychedelic trance music scene—she finds herself deep inside a new sonic current where classic psytrance, techno, and electro are converging into something sharper, more sensual, and brimming with raw energy. She hints that her next musical chapter might tap into this psychedelic bloodstream. “The scene here is mutating in real time,” she says. “It’s still wild, but more seductive now. There's heat in it.”



She is also currently working on two club bangers with producers Ox7gen and Oceantied and has three new singles in the pipeline, each aiming to stitch pop’s addictive hooks into the darker cloth of underground sounds. “There’s a wave building,” she says. “It’s fresh. It’s awake.” She isn’t just surfing that wave; she’s shaping it.



To call Anushka a DJ is to miss the point. Her entire journey across fashion photography and music is a blueprint of creative resistance. Her art has always broken rules. First, her photography disrupted the fashion world; now, her beats are shattering old ideas of sound. Just like her photographs, her music grabs your attention and doesn’t let go, crafting immersive worlds you can feel. India’s cultural zeitgeist craves something raw and unapologetic, and Anushka is answering the call. She’s not just a DJ—she’s a rebel leader with a mixer, turning beats into a battle cry for India’s new generation—a generation that refuses to be tamed.

In our Ones To Watch series, we spotlight exciting new producers who are shaking up the game and progressing dance music culture while they do it.




Small Crab is a Frankfurt-born, Dublin-based producer making left-field bass music and experimental techno. Since her debut release in 2021, she’s been making huge waves thanks to her playful and compelling DJ sets and relentless pursuit of hard-hitting bass bangers designed to tear the dance floor up.




She’s made a big impact in a short while with releases on Scuffed Recordings, Left, Right & Centre, and Early Reflex. Her mix for Daisychain was named RA’s Mix of the Day in 2024, and not long after that she was featured as one of Mixmag’s Artists to Watch in 2025. She’s a regular on the Dublin club circuit, supported Mall Grab, Sputnik One, Hassan Abou Alam and Jay Carder, and has a slot lined up at Dancing Family Festival this July. Today, we’ll take a closer look at Small Crab’s journey so far, key releases and what she has lined up for the future.




From Frankfurt to the Floor




Real name Anastasia, Small Crab’s early exposure to music came from analog rather than electronic music. She learned violin as a kid and started playing drums as a teen, specifically. That became a long-term passion, and she played in several rock and funk bands and went on to study percussion at college in Dublin. “That was my first influence,” she says. “I wanted to be a rock artist.”




Then a friend introduced her to Ableton, and she dove in head-first, watching YouTube tutorials late into the night. Unsurprisingly, she was drawn to percussive sounds and earth-shattering bass, which led her deep into Dublin’s underground. “That’s when I started to get a real interest in the club scene and electronic music and wanting to DJ,” she says.




Anastasia attended a lot of club nights at venues that are now closed in Dublin, like Wigwam, Button Factory, and D8. “Now a lot of the clubs have closed down and collectives don't put parties on because they’ve moved on to something else,” she says.




Finding Her Groove




For Small Crab, producing music came before DJing, and still does. “My first love is making my own music with Ableton,” she says. “I very quickly became interested in rhythmic patterns, and that’s where I found the music I like, and I’ve stuck to it for the last five years.”




Anastasia says one of the main reasons she was able to start learning production was because her music college provided Ableton and LogicPro for free. Then the pandemic hit, and she was trapped at home with nothing to do except learn the ropes.




From Mall Grab to Small Crab




Small Crab’s name is a spin-off from one of her favorite artists. “I was listening to Mall Grab a lot and I loved him, and my sister said “You aren’t Mall Grab, you’re Small Crab because my star sign is cancer,” Anastasia laughs. “And when I started uploading music to SoundCloud, it just stuck.”




And not long ago, she opened for Mall Grab in Dublin. “The producers knew I was a massive fan and put me on the line-up,” she says. “I was so nervous when I met him, he said I must be the infamous Small Crab.”




Other influences include but are not limited to: Sputnik One, Glimmerman, Sim, Laksa, re:ni and many others. “I always used to listen to Rhyw’s tracks as a reference,” she says. “He’s an amazing producer, literally one of my favorites.”




Breakout Releases




Small Crab’s debut solo EP came out on Flowing With Honey on Paryìa in 2022, a four-track percussive extravaganza steeped in hypnotic rhythms that tread the line between techno, drum ’n’ bass, and experimental. She followed it up on Left, Right & Centre in 2023 with Glucosides / AYY + Tokyo, two tracks packed full of left-field techno and breaks with bass designed to destroy sound systems. But the EP that garnered global attention came in the form of her debut on Scuffed Recordings in 2024. Batomu is the sound of an artist in her stride and won the attention of Mixmag in their "Spotlight" series and "Top 25 Artists to Watch" lists.




Looking to the Future




Anastasia is a founding member of Skin&Blister, a community providing a platform to educate, inspire, and showcase aspiring women and non-binary DJs, producers, and behind-the-scenes roles, and has a lot more releases up her sleeve, including an EP on First Second Label.




And after working hard to hone her sound, Small Crab’s now playing gigs with some of her all-time favorite artists. “I’m playing a gig with Hassan About Alam in France on Friday,” she says. “I feel like these moments just mean a lot, because I’ve worked towards getting better and getting better, and now the people that inspired me know I exist, and that’s just so cool.”

Ones To Watch: Small Crab

Victor Cester, better known as CHESSTER, has quietly built a career that spans continents and dance floors without relying on flash or gimmicks. Born and raised in Venice, Italy, his early exposure to electronic music in the 2000s shaped a path that would eventually take him to London, where a move in his early twenties unlocked new opportunities to perform and produce. Those years in the UK allowed him to sharpen his sound—one rooted in house but touched by disco, hip hop, and UK garage influences.



Now based in Los Angeles, CHESSTER tours consistently across Europe and the U.S., performing at top venues while maintaining a steady output of productions. His work has landed on respected labels like PIV, Factory 93, Dansu Discs, and Range. In 2025, he launched his own imprint, Blink, with the goal of putting out thoughtful, high-quality house music.

In this interview, CHESSTER opens up about early setbacks, personal routines, and studio habits, offering a closer look at the personality behind the decks. From his go-to pre-show snack (pizza) to the record that never leaves his USB (Cleptomaniacs’ “All I Do”), CHESSTER proves to be as grounded as he is experienced.

I have a lot of great memories, but here’s a fun one: my first ever performance – I was 13, playing at a school party – and the power went out seconds after hitting play. I immediately knew that this music thing was gonna be no joke hahahah.



Who’s an artist that inspires you right now?


I’m lucky to have an incredibly talented group of artist friends. Working with them is my main source of inspiration.

What’s your go-to snack or drink before a show?


Pizza.

What’s your favorite city to play in, and why?


Anywhere in the U.S. – people are very passionate and always bring amazing energy! Other than that I love London and Amsterdam as well!

Fun / authentic / positive.



What’s one non-music-related thing that makes you happy?


My cat, Crazy.

If you could time travel to any era of music history, when would it be and why?


I’d probably go back to the ‘80s or ‘90s to experience the overall culture, the birth of genres like house and hip hop, and re-live life before the internet.

Before music, drawing was my thing – I was pretty good at it!

Probably my job hahaha.

As someone who deals with technology and computers to write music, has there been a gut-wrenching story where you lost your music or the track/beats you were working on?


I’m very organized – I’ve never lost anything! Another thing that I can compliment myself for! 



What makes you cringe when you listen to your early material?


The complete lack of structure or sense hahahah.



What do you find yourself obsessing about most in the studio? From every perspective of creating a track.


I don’t really get obsessed over anything in particular these days, but the mix of a song is something I tend to spend quite some time on!



What is your favorite set time and duration?


I enjoy the journey – warm-ups, peak time, and even the magic of a proper closing set. Each moment hits differently. Two to three hours is ideal! Possibly during a summer open air?
