Overview

Day two of the Detroit Love takeover rises to the roof at Superior Ingredients as Carl Craig, Moodymann, Dennis Free, Luke Hess, and Valencia lead a daytime gathering shaped by sunlight, skyline views, and long afternoon blends. After the intensity of Saturday night, Sunday opens the experience outward, trading shadows for open air while keeping the weekend’s Detroit foundation firmly in place.

The series was created by Carl Craig as a way to extend the musical values that shaped Detroit into a global force. Across decades as an artist, producer, and label founder, Craig has remained central to the city’s global influence, connecting techno, house, jazz, and experimental music through a fiercely independent lens. His return on Sunday offers a different perspective than the night before — expansive, patient, and designed to unfold with the rhythm of the day.

Moodymann brings a presence inseparable from Detroit’s musical history. Drawing deeply from soul, jazz, blues, and house, Kenny Dixon Jr. has built a body of work that preserves the roots of Black American music while reshaping them for the dancefloor. From releases on Planet E, Peacefrog, and his own Mahogani Music imprint to landmark albums like Silentintroduction, Moodymann, and Taken Away, his sound remains unmistakable and deeply personal.

Dennis Free, who proudly embraces his African and Chinese heritage, brings a Brooklyn-rooted perspective to the rooftop, blending classic house with percussive club sounds, ghetto tech, and high-BPM grooves. A founding force behind the Level III Collective, his work is grounded in community-building and forward-thinking club culture.

Luke Hess, a Metro Detroit native shaped by the city’s mid-’90s warehouse culture, adds a deep and meditative dimension to the day. With a background in mathematics and engineering, his approach centers on frequencies, tone, and atmosphere. His releases on labels including Planet E, FXHE, Echocord, Rekids, and Motech — along with albums such as Light in the Dark and Keep On — have established him as a leading voice in Detroit’s deeper techno continuum.

Local support comes from Valencia, whose selections open the day and set the tone, connecting the Detroit-centered lineup with Brooklyn’s own dancefloor community.

Sunday’s rooftop edition highlights the lighter side of Detroit Love — connection, movement, and space to let the afternoon unfold naturally. As the second half of the weekend, it closes the takeover with warmth and range, offering a daytime counterpoint to Saturday’s club intensity while staying grounded in the city that inspired it all.
