From ruins in the hills to hippie gardens and seaside sunsets, the island has always thrived on unusual backdrops. These are the places that became legendary not just for the music but because they looked spectacular in photographs. Here are some of our favorites.



The Abandoned Festival Club: Ibiza’s Lost Superclub

In the hills near Sant Josep lies a ruin that has fascinated generations of ravers and photographers alike: Festival Club. When it opened in 1972, this sprawling amphitheater was billed as Ibiza’s first “superclub,” complete with restaurants, terraces, and mock bullfighting shows. For a brief moment, it was the future of nightlife.



But the oil crisis in 1973 devastated tourism, and within two years Festival Club was abandoned. Nature crept back, graffiti artists took over, and rave crews in the ’80s and ’90s used it for secret parties.



What makes Festival Club endure is its atmosphere. The crumbling arches daubed in neon spray paint, pine trees reclaiming the terraces, and the open sky above create a dramatic, post-apocalyptic backdrop. DJs like Maceo Plex have recorded atmospheric sets here, and countless photo shoots have turned the ruins into an unlikely cultural monument. In Ibiza’s visual story, Festival Club represents both the optimism of its early party industry and the rebelliousness of the underground.





Benimussa Park: From Zoo to Tribal Playground

Benimussa Park is perhaps Ibiza’s most surreal venue. Originally launched in the 1970s as Gala Night, a part-zoo and part-park, it was once fabled to keep seals and monkeys to entertain tourists. By the 1980s, it pivoted to outdoor events, but its defining moment came in 2007, when The Zoo Project took root.



The organizers decided to lean into the zoo theme: DJs performed inside the old seal pit, performers roamed in body paint and animal costumes, and the crowd became part of the spectacle. Photographs of ravers painted like tigers, dancing in the sun, quickly spread worldwide.



The venue’s layout added to the magic: the terraced arena, a leafy Mandala Garden for healing spaces, and hidden corners decorated with surreal art installations. Over more than 15 summers, The Zoo Project turned Benimussa Park into one of Ibiza’s most unforgettable and visually unique party locations.

Pikes Hotel: Rock ’n’ Roll Mythology

Few places embody the decadent mythology of Ibiza like Pikes Hotel. Founded in 1978 by Tony Pike, the finca-style hotel became a refuge for rock stars and celebrities during the island’s freewheeling 1980s. Its aquamarine pool achieved instant fame when Wham! filmed their “Club Tropicana” video there in 1983, sealing the location in pop culture history.



Then came Freddie Mercury’s 41st birthday in 1987 - a party so excessive it still defines Ibiza’s legend of indulgence. Stories of dwarfs carrying cakes, champagne flowing endlessly, and a guest list of icons became the stuff of folklore. Photographs of George Michael by the pool or Freddie’s entourage celebrating at Pikes helped spread its reputation far beyond the island.



Today, Pikes carefully preserves this rock ’n’ roll heritage. Freddie’s old suite is now a nightclub called “Freddie’s,” where the spirit of its golden era still flickers. Its kitschy interiors, mural-covered walls, and infamous poolside remain among the island’s most photographed spots (even though today it has a no-filming policy).





Dalt Vila: Dancing on Ancient Walls

Ibiza’s Old Town, Dalt Vila, is a UNESCO World Heritage site of cobblestone streets and fortress walls. For most of the year, it’s a place for quiet evening strolls and history tours. But during the International Music Summit (IMS) Finale, it transforms into one of the most breathtaking party venues in the world.



Since 2008, DJs like Pete Tong and Fatboy Slim have played against a backdrop of medieval ramparts, with panoramic views of the marina and cathedral lit up at night. The juxtaposition of cutting-edge electronic music against 16th-century stone is dramatic, and every photograph captures that sense of contrast.



Part of the magic lies in its rarity: as a protected site, Dalt Vila hosts only a handful of events each year. The Sunset Strip: Café del Mar and Café Mambo

If Ibiza has a daily ritual, it’s the sunset at San Antonio’s Sunset Strip. When José Padilla began his sunset DJ sets in the early ’90s, it gave rise to the Café del Mar compilation albums, which sold millions and spread the Balearic sound worldwide.

In 1995, BBC Radio 1 began broadcasting live from Mambo’s terrace, turning it into a global stage. We’re heading back to 528 Ibiza on Tuesday for Pikes Presents | Love.House.Disco Nestled in the Benimussa Hills, 528 offers an open-air Garden Stage surrounded by pine and sky, followed by a cozy indoor club - all echoing Pikes’ free-spirited Balearic vibe.



From 18:30 to 23:00, the Garden will come alive with a danceable line-up: Groove Armada (DJ set), Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (DJ set), Prosumer, and Severino will be behind the decks this week.

This Week’s Parties in Ibiza (August 28 - September 3)

Two decades ago, in the summer of 2005, Pacha Ibiza was already a living legend. While some of the island’s other clubs went bigger, louder, or stranger, Pacha thrived by being glamorous, musically credible, and endlessly versatile. Housed in a converted whitewashed farmhouse on the edge of Ibiza Town, with its cherries logo glowing above the door, the club was the ultimate blend of VIP sparkle and underground spirit. And that season’s line-up proved it: seven nights of heavyweight residencies, each night programmed like a festival in its own right.



Walking into Pacha in 2005 meant stepping into a maze of rooms: the main dancefloor with its low ceiling and central DJ booth; the Global Room hosting hip-hop and funk; the funky side rooms and rooftop terrace where partygoers caught their breath under the stars. What really set it apart, though, was the way the VIP balcony wrapped around the dancefloor. Celebrities and club-kids danced practically shoulder-to-shoulder, creating that unique Pacha energy: equal parts hedonism and high society.





So what did a week at Pacha look like in 2005? Let’s go day by day.


Monday - Release Yourself with Roger Sanchez

Kicking off the week, Mondays belonged to Roger Sanchez and his Release Yourself residency. The New Yorker’s soulful, vocal-driven sets made Mondays surprisingly popular with the island’s locals, who packed the floor week after week. Sanchez typically played marathon sets, mixing gospel-tinged house, funky basslines, and plenty of hands-in-the-air moments. It wasn’t a night loaded with guests or gimmicks - just Roger in command from start to finish - and that was exactly why people loved it.



Tuesday - Defected in the House

If Mondays were smooth and soulful, Tuesdays brought the funk in full force. Defected Records had just moved from the smaller El Divino to Pacha in 2005, and the upgrade fit perfectly. From June through September, Defected in the House transformed Tuesdays into a soulful house paradise. Residents included Junior Jack & Kid Crème, Sandy Rivera, Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez, Dimitri from Paris, and Martin Solveig. The guest list read like a who’s who of house royalty - Bob Sinclar, DJ Gregory, Chus, Miguel Migs, Danny Krivit, and more all stopped by. Throw in live performances from acts like Reel People and you had a night that felt both polished and organic, the perfect marriage of Pacha’s glamour and Defected’s house music heart.





Wednesday - Subliminal Sessions with Erick Morillo

By midweek, things got wild. Erick Morillo’s Subliminal Sessions were among the most notorious nights on the island, and 2005 was no exception. Morillo was joined by co-residents Seb Fontaine, Steve Angello, and Harry Romero, plus an endless parade of guests. Highlights included Timo Maas at the opening, Darren Emerson in July, and a back-to-back set from Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso that foreshadowed the rise of the Swedish House Mafia.



Subliminal was as much about the party as the music: champagne spraying, late-morning afterparties, and even cameos from P. Diddy, who jumped on the mic to hype the crowd. It was glamorous chaos in true Pacha style.





Thursday - Ministry, Yoshitoshi & F*** Me I’m Famous

Thursday was a mixed bag, and that was part of its charm. On alternating weeks, Pacha handed the reins to Ministry of Sound or Deep Dish’s Yoshitoshi label. Ministry nights featured eclectic line-ups with names like Groove Armada and breakbeat duo Evil Nine, while Yoshitoshi brought Deep Dish and their progressive house allies. Meanwhile, David and Cathy Guetta’s F*** Me I’m Famous was establishing itself as one of Pacha’s most in-demand nights, pulling in celebrities, models, and big-room house fans for unapologetically glamorous parties. Thursdays showed off Pacha’s versatility: one week underground credibility, the next week champagne-fuelled mayhem.



Friday - Pure Pacha with Pete Tong

Fridays belonged to Pete Tong, who hosted Pure Pacha, a night designed to blend classy music with a celebrity-studded vibe. The opening party alone featured Carl Cox, John Digweed, Wally López, and Nic Fanciulli alongside Tong - a line-up most clubs would kill to have over an entire season. Throughout the summer, guests like Sasha, Felix da Housecat, and live act Bodyrockers kept Fridays eclectic and stylish.



Tong also used the night to spotlight rising stars, with Spanish DJ Wally López appearing four times in support of his Perceptions of Pacha compilation. Pure Pacha perfectly embodied the club’s ethos: fashion, fun, and forward-thinking music all under one roof.





Saturday - Def Mix with David Morales

If there was ever a night for house music purists, it was Saturday. For years, David Morales had hosted the legendary Def Mix parties at Pacha, and 2005 continued the tradition. The opener featured Morales alongside Frankie Knuckles, a historic pairing of two house icons. Over the season, guests included Satoshi Tomiie, Danny Rampling, Pete Heller, and Hernán Cattáneo, all delivering soulful, uplifting sets. One standout night celebrated Morales’ birthday in August - a reminder that Def Mix felt less like a residency and more like a family gathering. Saturdays were classy, vocal, and emotional: the spiritual heart of Pacha.



Sunday - Everybody with Sander Kleinenberg

Sundays were always tricky in Ibiza, dominated by Space’s famous We Love marathon. But in 2005 Pacha made a bold play with Sander Kleinenberg’s Everybody residency. The Dutch DJ brought progressive and electro sounds, plus guests like Lee Burridge and Tom Stephan, aiming to lure serious clubbers who wanted something deeper than just another big-room blowout. Attendance could be hit-or-miss, but for those who went, Sundays were all about trippy visuals, long builds, and underground credibility in Pacha’s glamorous setting.



One-Off Highlights

On top of the weekly schedule, 2005 delivered some unforgettable one-offs. Danny Tenaglia played two marathon sets at Pacha, part of a series of Renaissance parties that season - a huge treat, since he rarely appeared on the island. Pacha’s own Flower Power nights also returned for a handful of dates, transforming the club into a psychedelic time machine of 60s and 70s classics. Meanwhile, the Global Room hosted live performances from Kelis and Dizzee Rascal, proof that Pacha wasn’t afraid to cross genres.





Why 2005 Still Matters

Looking back, 2005 captures Pacha at a sweet spot: still a family-run club with deep local roots, but also a global brand expanding to places like New York. Inside, it was intimate enough to feel special, yet big enough to host superstar DJs seven nights a week. Culturally, it defined what many now think of as “Ibiza style” - the mingling of underground music, international celebrities, and carefree hedonism, all under one roof. 2005 represents an era when Ibiza was at its glamorous, unmissable peak.

This Thursday 21 August, HUGEL brings his party Make The Girls Dance to Hï Ibiza, from 11:30pm until late.



Hï Ibiza, voted the world’s number one club, is famous for its incredible sound, stunning lights, and three unique rooms, including a DJ booth in their unisex bathrooms. It’s the perfect place for HUGEL’s mix of Latin house, Afro beats, and feel-good vibes.



In the Theatre, HUGEL will be joined by house legend Bob Sinclar for a night packed with uplifting tracks and big energy on the dance floor.



Over in the Club Room, Ukrainian DJ Miss Monique will bring her hypnotic progressive and melodic house sound, alongside the driving beats of Eli Brown.



This is HUGEL’s first full season with his own residency at Hï, and it’s quickly becoming one of the most talked-about new nights in Ibiza.

Galactic Circus | UNVRS | Friday, August 22

Step into a futuristic carnival this Friday 22 August, as David Guetta presents Galactic Circus returns to UNVRS, Ibiza’s colossal hyperclub, from 23:30 until the sun comes up.



UNVRS rose from the historic Privilege site in San Rafael and opened at the beginning of this summer season. It’s a true hyperclub - combining the scale of an arena with luxury club design, advanced acoustics, immersive lighting, and sensory experiences like aerial shows and hidden micro-clubs (including the Wild Comet which is in the unisex bathroom).



Galactic Circus is David Guetta’s most ambitious Ibiza residency yet. Framed as a “travel to another dimension,” it’s a multisensory night blending music, tech, and art. On 22 August, Guetta headlines alongside Meduza and Marten Hørger, promising melodic euphoria and boundary-pushing sounds.

Saturdays | 528 Ibiza | Saturday, August 23

Expect sunset magic and pure music this Saturday at 528 Ibiza - a weekly escape running from evening into early morning on the outskirts of San Antonio.



Located in the serene Benimussa Hills, 528 Ibiza is a hidden gem - famed as previously being a zoo (though not true), the venue is now a lush open-air space with stages nestled among gardens and trees, offering a soulful, low-key clubbing experience where the vibe comes before the visuals.



This weekend, the party unfolds in two parts; the Terrace is open from 20:00 until 23:00, with the space soaking in the day to night vibes as the air is filled with nostalgic house sounds, featuring Jason Bye, Graham Gold, Andy Baxter, Edele Andaya, and Chris Bayne.



Following this, the Club Room will open from 23:00 to close. The rhythm continues in a more intimate, immersive space, focused purely on the taste-making sound. The lineup is still under wraps but if past weeks have been anything to go by, we just know it will be good.



This new residency, curated by Andy Manumission, channels the spirit of the wild, free-spirited Manumission era - no phones, just connection, discovery, and music that flows naturally.

Step into a world of myth and music this Sunday 24 August, as Pantheøn transforms Cova Santa into a modern-day temple of sound from 19:00 to 05:00.



Cova Santa, located within the pine-covered hills near San José, is a stunning open-air venue blending an amphitheater, garden, and rooftop bar - all under the starry Ibiza sky. It’s also got a cave club for those who want to carry on until early morning. It’s famed for its soulful, immersive nights, those where no phones fill the air and the crowd are truly enjoying themselves.



Pantheøn is this season’s mystical Sunday residency, running every week through October, where DJs take on godlike status and the venue becomes a temple of myth and energy.



This week’s lineup is extremely strong, including Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Syreeta, Dunmore Brothers, Frank Storm, and Saldivar - all ready to bring deep grooves, tribal beats, and soulful house in a night meant to uplift and transport.

Sonny Fodera | Pacha Ibiza | Monday, August 25

Sonny Fodera returns to Pacha Ibiza this Monday, 25 August, from 23:00 to 06:00, backed by guest DJs D.O.D. and Jazzy.



Pacha Ibiza is an icon of nightlife history - its twin-cherry logo and glamorous rooftop have been magnets for music lovers since 1973. This year, Monday nights belong to house sensation Sonny Fodera, who is hosting a 17-week residency here, running from mid-June through early October. His residency marks a milestone: a dream come true playing in the same club where he first danced on the island.

This Week’s Parties in Ibiza (August 21 - 27)

Few places in the world wear their history as vividly as Ibiza. Over the past six decades, the island’s style has transformed from barefoot bohemian to glittering couture, yet it has never lost its soul. In the 1960s, free-spirited hippies in flowing cotton and handmade jewellery helped create a dress code rooted in freedom and self-expression. By the 1980s, Ibiza’s burgeoning club culture exploded into a riot of sequins, feathers, and neon. The 1990s brought rave energy and streetwear swagger, paving the way for the 2000s’ boho-luxe glamour and high-fashion VIP scene. Today, Ibiza blends all these influences into a kaleidoscope of looks - sustainable vintage, gender-fluid streetwear, and designer resortwear - all united by a single philosophy: dress how you like, but with style.





1960s - Bohemian Beginnings

In the 1960s, Ibiza became a magnet for hippies escaping political conservatism and seeking artistic freedom. The style was anti-establishment: men wore loose kaftans, Indian cotton shirts, or went shirtless; women embraced flowing skirts, peasant blouses, beads, and natural fabrics. Local Ibicenco elements - straw hats, espadrilles, embroidered shawls - blended with psychedelic prints and tie-dye. Public nudity and unisex fashion blurred gender lines, capturing a spirit of liberation immortalized in films like More (1969).







1970s - Flower Power & Adlib Fashion

The early 70s brought a new identity with Moda Adlib, launched in 1971 by Yugoslav princess Smilja Mihailovitch. Inspired by the phrase “ad libitum” (“at one’s pleasure”), Adlib merged traditional white Ibizan dresses with hippie ease - embroidered cotton, lace and flowing silhouettes. Women wore goddess-like white dresses, off-shoulder tops, flower crowns, and artisanal jewelry from hippie markets like Punta Arabí, which is still going today. Men stuck to bell-bottoms, linen shirts, and talismans. Later in the decade, evenings at the newly opened Pacha mixed bohemian daywear with playful disco touches, keeping the dress code loose, sensual, and creative.







1980s - Glamour & Excess in Club Culture

By the 1980s, Ibiza was a global nightlife hotspot. Superclubs like Amnesia and Ku embraced extravagant themed nights. Women wore metallic mini-dresses, plunging jumpsuits, lingerie-inspired tops, and sometimes only body paint. Men rivaled them with drag ensembles, leather gear, spandex pants, or carnival costumes. Grace Jones’ performances epitomized this androgynous boldness. Leopard print, sequins, neon, and feathers ruled, while thong swimwear made its beach debut. Off the dancefloor, Balearic beat lovers sported tropical shirts and cut-off shorts, while Ibiza Town became a melting pot of punk, disco, and New Wave looks.







1990s - Rave Revolution & Global Clubbing

The rave boom transformed Ibiza in the 90s. Clubs like Space and Amnesia were filled with neon baggy pants, crop tops, smiley-face T-shirts, and glow stick accessories. Trainers replaced heels for all-night dancing. British package tourists brought football shirts, Union Jack shorts, and cheeky slogan tees, especially in San Antonio. In contrast, Pacha’s VIP set leaned towards minimalist and glamorous - Calvin Klein slip dresses for women, linen trousers and silk shirts for men. The infamous club night Manumission blended all worlds: burlesque performers, costumed ravers, and designer-clad socialites under one roof.







2000s - Boho-Luxe & Designer Nightlife

The 2000s brought celebrity DJs, VIP culture, and stricter dress codes at high-end clubs like Ushuaïa (which opened in 2008). Designer labels such as Hervé Léger, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana started to appear on dancefloors. Women wore stilettos and couture dresses; men flaunted crisp shirts, blazers, and luxury watches. Daytime style shifted to boho-luxe: kaftans, maxi dresses, gladiator sandals, wide-brim hats, and designer swimwear. Luxury boutiques opened in Marina Botafoch, while on-island designers updated traditional whites with modern cuts. Andre Power has built a career on connecting people through music, art, and culture. As the creator of LINK UP, his global event series, he’s played in over 50 countries while giving a platform to emerging DJs and fostering spaces for genuine interaction. Since its debut in 2021, LINK UP has grown from a post-pandemic day party in Los Angeles into an international fixture, with editions in cities like London, Atlanta, and Chicago. Power keeps the vision personal—designing event artwork himself, handpicking diverse lineups, and tailoring each city’s edition to fill gaps in its nightlife. In this interview, he talks about what goes into curating LINK UP, why community matters in nightlife, and how he keeps the series feeling fresh as it grows.



When you’re curating a new LINK UP city, what’s the first thing you look for?


I always consider whether the city even needs another party. Even though everything about LINK UP is special and intentional, I never want it to feel like just another party in just another city. With LINK UP, and much of what I do, there’s always an aim and purpose—to fill a gap for what’s needed and missing.



What’s something behind the scenes at LINK UP that people don’t realize takes a lot of effort?


Each LINK UP features a diverse lineup of DJs, with a focus on taking the party through a journey by intentionally curating set times. I also make a point of giving newer DJs opportunities. For example, in Los Angeles, four years in, it’s rare that I book the same DJ twice.



What’s the last set you played that really stuck with you, and why?


The premiere of LINK UP was a special one, not only because it was the first international edition of the event, but also because London is my personal favorite city to DJ in. The audience there really understands and appreciates art and music unlike anywhere else I’ve been.



Is there a specific artist you’ve booked at LINK UP that you feel everyone should be watching right now?


Some of my favorite DJ sets at LINK UP, and artists who have since gone on to bigger things, include Anastazja from LA and DJ Mochi from Chicago.





How do you think your visual art background influences the way LINK UP looks and feels?


I think branding consistency and evolution are really important. I’ve put a lot of thought into designing the flyers for each event so they stay consistent but still evolve over time. I also make sure the flyer art connects to the actual event—for example, incorporating plants into both.



What gave you the idea to start this brand?


The idea for LINK UP came at the very end of the global pandemic. I noticed how much people wanted to be physically connected again after lockdown, while still feeling safe. It was during the last month or two of the mask mandate, when people were finally starting to feel comfortable gathering again.



How do you personally stay grounded with so much travel and output?


Travel and connecting with new people around the world actually keep me grounded and inspire my work. I’m constantly learning while on the road, and those experiences always shape my output in the best way.



What role do you think community really plays in the future of nightlife?


I believe nightlife is nothing without community. Events and promoters need to keep growing, elevating, and—most importantly—listening to what’s missing in nightlife and what people truly want.



What’s your pre-show ritual—or do you just wing it?


I don’t have much of a pre-show ritual. I just like to feel rested and make sure I’ve sorted my music for the upcoming set. If it’s a new city or anywhere outside of LA, I often arrive a day early to get a feel for the place, maybe by visiting a local bar, lounge, or party.



How did you come up with the name LINK UP?


I wanted something literal that flowed off the tongue, a phrase that was also an action—something that captured the reconnection of a community after the global pandemic.

Ibiza has long been recognized as a global hub for electronic music, serving as the ultimate proving ground for DJs aspiring to international fame. Many artists who've graced the decks of global stages began their journeys spinning sets in humble bars on the island, eventually ascending to global stardom. We’re here to spotlight five iconic DJs whose Ibiza residencies catapulted them onto the international stage.



In the early '90s, Smokin’ Jo emerged as a pioneering figure in Ibiza's burgeoning club scene. Although initially gaining traction at London's Trade nightclub, it was her pivotal 1992 residency at Space Ibiza that propelled her into global consciousness. That same year, she broke barriers as the first - and still only - female DJ named DJ Mag’s World #1 DJ. Her relentless sets at Space and Manumission at Ku became legendary, helping define Ibiza’s nightlife and laying groundwork for future female DJs. Jo’s global career flourished thereafter, taking her to top clubs and festivals worldwide.





Steve Lawler, known affectionately as the "King of Space," began his Ibiza journey in 1995 with a demanding residency at Café Mambo in San Antonio. Playing seven days a week, Lawler mastered his craft, eventually securing sets on Pacha’s rooftop terrace. His breakthrough came with a pivotal residency at Space Ibiza’s famous "We Love… Sundays," earning him international acclaim. By the early 2000s, Lawler was a household name, touring globally, winning multiple DJ Awards, and cementing his legacy as one of Ibiza’s great success stories.





Jamie Jones offers another quintessential example of Ibiza's transformative power. Initially playing back rooms at small bars and parties around San Antonio in the early 2000s, Jones steadily built his reputation. His defining moment came with his residency at DC10’s Circoloco, an underground favorite that saw him ascend from loyal attendee to beloved resident DJ. In 2012, Jones launched his own iconic Ibiza residency, Paradise at DC10, solidifying his brand and reputation. Today, Jamie Jones headlines festivals globally, operates the influential Hot Creations label, and continues to symbolize Ibiza's enduring underground spirit.





Sam Divine epitomizes the more recent success story. Arriving in Ibiza in the mid-2000s, Divine tirelessly built her reputation in San Antonio’s bar circuit, notably at Hush nightclub, where she spent four formative summers honing her skills. Her breakthrough arrived in 2010 when she became the resident DJ for Defected at Pacha Ibiza after being a ticket seller for them on the streets of San An. Performing alongside industry legends such as Frankie Knuckles, Divine quickly captured the island’s attention. This residency skyrocketed her career, leading her to become Defected’s central figure, hosting its global radio show and headlining international events. Divine's 2024 headlining residency at Ushuaïa Ibiza marked a full-circle milestone, underscoring her rise from modest beach club sets to global fame.





Another recent sensation is Scottish DJ Hannah Laing, whose Ibiza journey began humbly at 18 years old with a residency at The Highlander, a popular bar on San Antonio’s West End. Over three summers, Laing tirelessly perfected her energetic sound. Her turning point came unexpectedly through a viral remix of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s "Murder on the Dancefloor," drawing widespread acclaim. By 2022, Laing was opening stages at festivals like Creamfields, prompting her to pursue DJing full-time. In a stunning ascension, 2025 saw Laing become the first-ever female resident headliner at Hï Ibiza. From humble pub gigs to dominating Ibiza’s superclub scene, Laing exemplifies how dedication and talent can rapidly transform into global acclaim.





These DJs embody the transformative journey possible through Ibiza’s iconic club culture. However, they represent just a fraction of the talent cultivated by the island.

Honourable mentions include Luciano and Loco Dice, whose foundational years at DC10's Circoloco significantly influenced their worldwide success. Luciano’s Latin-infused tech-house sound became synonymous with Ibiza summers, while Loco Dice translated his gritty underground style into global festival dominance. Black Coffee, the South African DJ who won Ibiza’s Breakthrough DJ Award in 2015, used his success on the island as a springboard to international superstardom, becoming a sought-after headliner across continents. Similarly, Carl Cox’s iconic Space Ibiza residency redefined DJ residencies globally, earning him legendary status both on and off the island.



Together, these DJs exemplify Ibiza’s enduring power as a launchpad. The island continues to nurture talent from intimate residencies to global prominence, highlighting the unparalleled opportunities Ibiza offers aspiring artists in electronic music. Ibiza's journey to becoming a global techno capital is a story filled with innovation, rebellion, and endless reinvention. Beginning quietly in the eclectic soundscape of the 1980s, techno emerged as a powerful force, forever altering the island’s musical identity.



In the late 1980s, Ibiza was a melting pot of sounds, thanks to DJs like Alfredo Fiorito at Amnesia, who introduced a style famously known as the Balearic Beat. His eclectic sets blurred genres, weaving together rock, pop, house, and even early techno from Detroit. Alfredo’s innovative approach captivated British DJs Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling, and others, who exported this style back to the UK in 1988, sparking Britain’s acid house revolution. Among Alfredo’s influential tracks was Derrick May's seminal "Strings of Life," a Detroit techno classic that would foreshadow the island’s techno destiny.





As the island exploded in popularity in the early 1990s, techno began making deeper inroads into Ibiza’s nightlife, driven largely by international DJs hungry to test this exciting sound on eager audiences. A key figure in this transformation was British DJ Carl Cox, whose arrival in 1991 significantly shaped Ibiza's techno landscape. Known for high-energy, rapid-fire techno sets at venues like Space and Amnesia, Cox set a new standard, introducing thousands of clubbers to a harder, edgier electronic experience.



Yet, throughout much of the '90s, techno remained somewhat underground, overshadowed by house and trance. It took until the legendary summer of 1999 for techno to finally claim its rightful place. That year marked the launch of two seminal events: Cocoon and Circoloco. Sven Väth, a German DJ deeply influenced by his early visits to Ibiza, introduced Cocoon at Amnesia. This was Ibiza’s first weekly techno residency, a daring move at a time dominated by uplifting house and commercial trance. Cocoon quickly established itself as a techno powerhouse, drawing legendary names like Richie Hawtin and Ricardo Villalobos, and becoming synonymous with Ibiza’s techno culture.





Meanwhile, DC10, a former farmhouse near the airport, hosted the first Circoloco party - a raw, stripped-down after-hours event emphasizing pure underground vibes. Initially drawing just a handful of hardcore clubbers, Circoloco quickly developed a cult following thanks to resident DJs like Tania Vulcano, who mixed tribal and minimal grooves, creating an authentic underground experience. Circoloco's gritty ethos stood in stark contrast to Ibiza’s glossy clubs, solidifying its reputation as a bastion of authentic techno.



Entering the 2000s, Ibiza's techno scene expanded significantly. Cocoon’s Monday nights became legendary events, showcasing both international stars and emerging Spanish DJs such as Paco Osuna, who gained worldwide recognition through the platform Sven Väth provided. Similarly, DC10's Circoloco nurtured global techno stars including Luciano and Loco Dice, who honed their craft on its minimalist terrace.





This decade also witnessed the rise of minimal techno, propelled by artists like Richie Hawtin, whose stripped-back sound profoundly influenced the island's club scene. Meanwhile, Carl Cox launched his iconic residency "Music Is Revolution" at Space in 2001, becoming a Tuesday-night institution. Cox’s 15-year run significantly mainstreamed techno, firmly embedding the genre in Ibiza’s clubbing DNA.



Techno’s momentum accelerated even further into the 2010s. In 2012, Richie Hawtin introduced ENTER. at Space, a groundbreaking concept that married techno with immersive experiences and artistic innovation. That same year, Marco Carola’s Music On residency at Amnesia began dominating Friday nights, blending deep tech-house sounds with pure techno beats. Jamie Jones's Paradise at DC10 further expanded the underground palette, ensuring techno dominated Ibiza’s nightlife multiple nights a week.





The late 2010s saw techno become more prominent than ever, penetrating even traditionally house-centric venues like Pacha, where artists like Solomun blended melodic techno into mainstream clubbing. Residencies like Resistance at Privilege brought global techno heavyweights to the island, underscoring techno’s broad appeal.



Today, techno continues to thrive on Ibiza. Despite pandemic setbacks, clubs roared back, with Circoloco celebrating over two decades of existence, Cocoon marking its 20th anniversary with special events, and newer parties like Tale Of Us’s Afterlife and Amnesia’s Pyramid carrying the torch forward. Tech-house extravaganzas such as Paradise and Elrow further demonstrate the genre’s adaptability and ongoing popularity.

From a pandemic pause to a roaring revival, Ibiza’s 2020–2025 era produced a new generation of club anthems that defined the island’s resilience and party spirit. Even when dancefloors fell silent in 2020, tracks emerged that would later shake the White Isle once the clubs reopened. By 2022, Ibiza was back in full swing – and with it came songs that swept through beach bars, superclubs, and after-hours alike. Here are ten of the biggest Ibiza anthems of this period – tunes that achieved massive popularity both on the island and globally, each with its own story of when and how it ignited Ibiza’s crowds. “Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing)” – Fred again.. & The Blessed Madonna (2021) – House

In early 2021, as clubbers worldwide pined for a return to the dancefloor, Fred again.. and The Blessed Madonna delivered an emotional balm with “Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing).” This poignant house track - built on a somber monologue about shuttered nightlife - became an unofficial anthem of Ibiza’s comeback. DJs across the spectrum, from underground heroes to big-room residents, dropped it during those first post-lockdown sets. At Amnesia’s historic reopening/closing party in October 2021, you could spot tearful smiles as the spoken line “if I can live through this next six months, what comes next will be marvelous” rang out under the lights. In capturing the relief and love of finally dancing together again, “Marea” earned its place as a defining Ibiza anthem of 2021.





“Love Tonight” (Remix) – Shouse (2021) – Vocal House

Few tracks unite people quite like Shouse’s “Love Tonight.” Originally an underground vocal house tune, it exploded in summer 2021 thanks to soulful lyrics about togetherness - just what Ibiza needed. A slew of remixes catapulted “Love Tonight” onto Ibiza’s biggest stages. You couldn’t escape it! Big-room DJs embraced it too - Guetta himself gave it a bombastic remix and blasted it at Ushuaïa to thousands of hands in the air. Meanwhile, underground selectors weren’t shy about slipping in a more stripped-down edit during 5 AM moments. The magic of “Love Tonight” was that it resonated with everyone.





“The Age Of Love” (Charlotte de Witte & Enrico Sangiuliano Remix) (2021)– Techno/Trance

In 2021, a classic Ibiza anthem from the ’90s was reborn for a new generation. Belgian techno star Charlotte de Witte and Italy’s Enrico Sangiuliano reworked “The Age Of Love”, a 1990 trance standard, into a thunderous modern remix that swept the island (and the world). The remix’s pounding techno kicks and that immortal trance melody made for a potent combination, triggering nostalgia and frenzy in equal measure. It became the peak-time weapon for many DJs that season. Charlotte herself dropped it during her Ibiza appearances (including a memorable spin at Hï Ibiza in 2022) to rapturous response. By bridging eras, “The Age Of Love” remix united veteran Ibiza clubbers with new ravers under a shared anthem. Each time the breakdown hit, arms reached for the sky - proof that a great tune never loses its magic on the White Isle.





“Do It To It” – ACRAZE feat. Cherish (2021) – Tech House

Powered by an insanely catchy R&B vocal sample (“do it, to it”) and a chunky tech-house bassline, ACRAZE’s “Do It To It” became a surprise crossover smash in late 2021 that rolled right into Ibiza’s 2022 season. This track was everywhere. It racked up hundreds of millions of streams and by summer ‘22, Ibiza’s DJs had fully caught on. Big names championed it: FISHER hammered “Do It To It” at his Hï residency, Fatboy Slim worked it into his eclectic sets, and even trance titan Tiesto loved it so much he made a remix. By the end of 2022, it was cemented as an Ibiza anthem - a track that cut through genre divisions with one simple instruction: dance and have fun doing it.





“La Danza” – John Summit (2022) – Tech House/Latin House

If any track captured Ibiza’s hedonistic summer of 2022, it was John Summit’s “La Danza.” Released on Defected Records, this tech-house banger came built on a Latin-flavored chant and a hip-shaking groove - basically sunshine in a track. As Ibiza’s clubs roared back to life in 2022, “La Danza” quickly became omnipresent. It was the unofficial theme song of Defected’s wildly popular residency at Eden and Summit, a fast-rising star, played it at his own gigs. With its combination of a rolling bassline and Latin vocals, “La Danza” channeled the Balearic spirit of sexy, uninhibited dancing. By summer’s peak, even people who’d never set foot on Ibiza knew the tune - a testament to how thoroughly it dominated playlists and dancefloors. John Summit had delivered a modern Ibiza classic, and every spin of “La Danza” felt like carnival on the White Isle.





“My Paradise” – Jamie Jones (2022) – House/Disco

After years of spearheading Ibiza’s underground, Jamie Jones scored a bona fide island anthem in 2022 with “My Paradise.” This feel-good house track was intentionally crafted for his reborn Paradise residency (which moved to Amnesia in ’22). And it worked like a charm. From the very first Paradise party of the season, “My Paradise” became the night’s calling card: Jamie would often drop it as a highlight on the Amnesia terrace. The track’s appeal extended far beyond just Paradise, though. Soon every DJ from deep-house selectors to big-room jocks was giving “My Paradise” a spin. It was simultaneously an underground hit and a daytime radio tune - testament to its crossover magic. As Defected Records (who released it) noted, Jamie’s track “made a huge splash” in Ibiza 2022, earning support from tastemakers of all stripes. By season’s end, “My Paradise” had clinched the DJ Awards Track of the Season honor - a clear indicator of how thoroughly it enchanted the island.





“B.O.T.A. (Baddest Of Them All)” – Eliza Rose & Interplanetary Criminal (2022) – House/UK Garage

In summer 2022, an unlikely contender stormed Ibiza, and the world, in the form of Eliza Rose & Interplanetary Criminal’s “B.O.T.A. “Drugs From Amsterdam” – Mau P (2022) – Tech House

Every Ibiza season has its infectious earworm, and in late 2022 that honor went to Mau P’s cheekily titled “Drugs From Amsterdam.” This tech-house monster hit like a jolt of adrenaline. With its deep, warbling bassline and that hypnotic vocal loop the track spread through clubs faster than wildfire. It dominated the festival circuit and climbed charts worldwide - hitting #1 on Beatport and racking up over 100 million streams - and Ibiza was no exception to its reign. By 2023, Mau P had leveraged the song’s success into gigs all over the island (even teasing a Pacha residency), proving how one huge anthem can launch an artist’s Ibiza journey. “(It Goes Like) Nanana” – Peggy Gou (2023) – House

In 2023, Peggy Gou gifted Ibiza a bonafide summer anthem with “(It Goes Like) Nanana.” This track is pure vibe - a mid-tempo house groover with a nostalgic ‘90s touch and an earworm vocal that literally goes “na na na…” (and good luck getting it out of your head). By the time peak season hit, “Nanana” was seemingly the most-played electronic track of the summer. It soared up global charts and became the unofficial song of sun-soaked afternoons and hands-up nights on the island. What made “Nanana” special was its crossover appeal; hardcore underground fans loved its retro Balearic vibe, while casual clubbers found it simply irresistible. Sometimes a track doesn’t just soundtrack a season - it owns it. In 2024, that track was “Move” by Adam Port (of the Keinemusik crew) and Stryv, featuring vocalist Malachiii. Dripping with Afro-house flavor and a soulful plea to “move your body,” this song steadily caught fire across Ibiza’s dancefloors. With its rolling percussion and uplifting vocal, the track struck a chord, giving Ibiza clubbers a break from relentless tech beats and inviting them into a more hypnotic sway. This Week’s Parties in Ibiza (July 24 - 30)

Ibiza is no stranger to sunrise. But for decades now, the first light of day hasn’t signalled the end of the party, it’s marked the start of something new. In Ibiza, the afterparty isn’t an add-on. It’s an institution. A rite of passage. A subculture within the culture. It's where the rules get hazy, the music gets weirder, and the stories become legend.



From the 1990s to today, the White Isle has cultivated a unique relationship with the after-hours. As clubs closed, the real heads knew: the best memories were just beginning. Whether on the beach, in a sweaty terrace, or tucked away in a hidden villa, Ibiza afterparties have birthed scenes, launched careers, and blurred the boundaries between night and day. This is their story.



Space Ibiza: Where It All Took Off (Literally)

If Ibiza’s afterparty culture has a spiritual birthplace, it’s the Space Terrace. Beginning in the early ’90s, British DJs Alex P and Brandon Block created a daytime phenomenon that felt revolutionary: dancing outdoors in broad daylight, eyes shielded from the sun, bodies still pulsing from the night before. Located directly under the flight path of incoming planes, ravers would routinely cheer as jets thundered overhead, adding to the euphoric madness.



At a time when most clubs around the world were winding down by sunrise, Space was just opening its doors. Its open-air format and marathon sets rewrote the clubbing rulebook. Carl Cox’s legendary residency cemented the venue as a global after-hours Mecca. “See you on the terrace” became a mantra - and often, a challenge. Space didn’t just host afterparties. It defined them.





Circoloco at DC10: The Monday Morning Movement

While Space ruled Playa d’en Bossa, DC10 emerged from the dust beside Ibiza airport as the anarchic younger sibling. Launched in 1999 by two Italians, Antonio Carbonaro and Andrea Pelino, the first Circoloco events were free Monday morning gatherings of about 80 people, dancing on a concrete terrace to minimal grooves. It was raw. Loud. Lawless.



But word spread. Fast. By the early 2000s, Circoloco had become the Monday ritual. There was no guest list, no VIP, no marketing - just serious music and the serious heads who followed it. Everyone from Tania Vulcano to Luciano and Loco Dice cut their teeth here. It was the kind of place where you arrived on a whim and left days later, wondering what had happened to your week.



Even amid police raids and noise complaints, DC10’s reputation only grew. Today, it’s fully legal and still utterly uncompromising. Ask any underground DJ where they’d want to play a sunrise set, and chances are their answer is still: DC10 on a Monday.



The Manumission Motel: Afterparties Gone Wild

In the glitter-drenched chaos of 1990s Ibiza, Manumission reigned as the world’s most flamboyant party. But few knew that the real madness happened after the main event - at the now-legendary Manumission Motel.



Conceived by party architects Mike and Claire McKay, this converted brothel on the road to Jesús became a private den of indulgence. Each of its 15 themed rooms played host to performers, celebrities, and wide-eyed clubbers swept in by invitation. This was no ordinary afterparty - it was a surrealist cabaret with no end.



One infamous tale involves BBC Radio 1’s Lisa I’Anson, who disappeared into the Motel’s grip and missed her morning broadcast - a scandal that became tabloid fodder. As author Irvine Welsh put it: “The Motel was a cavern of chaos. You didn’t know what day it was, or if you were ever going to leave.”



The Motel was eventually demolished in 2005. But its legend? Untouchable.





Bora Bora: Beachfront Freedom

Few venues encapsulated Ibiza’s carefree spirit like Bora Bora Beach Club. Situated directly on the sands of Playa d’en Bossa, Bora Bora was a beachside dancefloor open to all. No cover charge. No pretense. Just sun, sand, and the steady thump of house music from afternoon until, well, whenever.



In the late ’90s and early 2000s, under the guidance of resident DJ Gee Moore, it became the unofficial follow-up to Space. You’d leave the terrace drenched in sweat, grab a drink, and stumble barefoot onto Bora Bora’s dancefloor - a wooden deck scattered with sunbeds, people dancing on tables, and jet trails crisscrossing the sky.



Bora Bora’s secret was in its openness. Clubbers, locals, DJs, and curious tourists all shared the same space. And when classics like Ultra Naté’s “Free” dropped as the sun dipped low, the whole beach erupted. It closed in 2022, but the memory of dancing there, toes in the sand, remains one of Ibiza’s purest joys.





The Kave: Ibiza’s Underground Cathedral of Afterhours

Tucked away in the forested hills of Santa Eulària lies one of Ibiza’s most elusive and mythologised afterparty spots: The Kave. Operating strictly through word-of-mouth, The Kave has become a modern-day legend among after-hours lovers. Inside, the air is thick, the walls drip with condensation, and a kaleidoscope of lights flicker off jagged rock as deep, hypnotic house reverberates through the stone. Attendees describe it as an "Alice in Wonderland" descent, complete with surreal decor, round hobbit-like doors, and a dancefloor that feels like it was carved straight out of the earth. With line-ups often kept secret and sets from the likes of Solomun stretching past 14 hours, it’s become a pilgrimage for the brave, the bold, and the beautifully unhinged. Despite growing scrutiny from local authorities, The Kave continues to capture the rebellious spirit of Ibiza’s underground sometimes, you just have to be in the know.





Pikes: Decadence in the Hills

Long before influencer culture turned boutique hotels into photo ops, Pikes was a real-deal hedonist hideaway. Perched in the hills above San Antonio, it was home to Freddie Mercury’s infamous 41st birthday party - a three-day extravaganza involving dwarves, debauchery, and hundreds of bottles of Moët.



In the 2010s, Ibiza Rocks revived the venue, preserving its rakish charm and relaunching its in-house club “Freddie’s.” Suddenly, afterparties for the Ibiza Rocks live gigs were back at Pikes, with DJs like DJ Harvey, Fatboy Slim, and Sven Väth spinning unannounced sets in intimate rooms packed with those in the know.



At Pikes, anything could happen. Often did, and still does.





The Villas: Off-the-Grid Magic

No list of afterparties is complete without mentioning Ibiza’s legendary villa sessions. These are the stuff of whispered invites and wild legend - a friend of a friend with a place in Es Cubells, a secret sunrise set from Solomun, Ricardo Villalobos spinning in someone’s garden until Tuesday afternoon or Michael Bibi carrying on his Solid Grooves residency long past DC10’s closing time.



Unregulated, unpredictable, and often unforgettable, villa parties carry the essence of the after: music, connection, and a total disregard for time. They’ve become rarer thanks to noise crackdowns, but they endure as the purest expression of Ibiza’s “anything goes” energy.



In Ibiza, the afterparty isn’t the end. It’s the next beginning. And for those who’ve danced past dawn, shared stories on sun-soaked terraces, or climbed into taxis bound for who-knows-where, one truth remains clear:

Chloé Robinson is in full stride, building on a decade-long career that began under her Barely Legal alias and now stands firmly under her own name. I think a tidy 1.5 hours, set time really does depend on context of the setting, a festival for example doing the 11pm slot easing people into the night is great, but then also doing the 5am slot when the sun is coming up can be special too.

On Tuesday, July 22, Pikes Presents returns to 528 Ibiza for another night of feel-good house, disco, and Balearic beats. Set in the lush Benimussa Hills, 528 Ibiza offers a stunning outdoor stage and intimate indoor club, making it an ideal spot for this musical gathering.

Ibiza’s club scene is legendary for its iconic residencies and unforgettable nights throughout summer, but not every new venture turns into a lasting success. Over the past decade, several ambitious residencies debuted with fanfare only to disappear quietly after a single season. Here’s a closer look at the most memorable (or maybe unmemorable) Ibiza residencies that lasted just one summer, and why they never returned.



1. In The Dark - Hï Ibiza (2017)

When Hï Ibiza opened in 2017, replacing the iconic Space Ibiza, it aimed to establish itself with a strong underground reputation. "In The Dark," featuring underground heavyweights like Joris Voorn, Luciano, Kölsch, Nic Fanciulli, and Steve Lawler, sought to cater to purist techno fans. Despite decent reviews and performances, the night lacked a clear identity, overshadowed by more defined residencies at other venues, and was ultimately replaced the following season as Hï refined its programming strategy.

2. GangStar - Hï Ibiza (2018)

Helmed by Cathy Guetta, GangStar aimed to bring a glamorous hip-hop and R&B experience to Ibiza, a bold departure from the island’s usual electronic focus. However, the theme felt outdated, reminiscent of early-2000s club aesthetics, and struggled to resonate with Ibiza’s core audience who traditionally preferred house, techno, and EDM. The lukewarm reception ensured it was dropped after a single run, with Hï quickly pivoting back to its electronic music roots.



3. VIBRA! - Amnesia (2018)

Amnesia’s attempt to diversify its musical offering saw the launch of VIBRA!, a Latin and reggaeton-themed party led by social media celebrity Gianluca Vacchi. Featuring stars such as Becky G and Karol G, VIBRA! aimed to capitalize on the global Latin music boom. Despite some early enthusiasm, attendance was inconsistent, as the Latin genre was still somewhat niche among Ibiza’s regular clubbers. This mixed reception led Amnesia to revert to its successful techno-centric programming the following season.





4. Tuesdays on Mars - Pacha (2018)

Pacha experimented with "Tuesdays on Mars," a space-themed residency featuring popular DJs such as Fatboy Slim and Martin Solveig. Despite high-profile names and elaborate theming, the concept didn’t resonate strongly enough to sustain consistent crowds throughout the season. Pacha, under new management at the time, quickly shifted strategy the following year, favoring mainstream pop and EDM acts over abstract, thematic nights.



5. Cocoon at Pacha - Pacha (2018)

Sven Väth’s iconic techno brand Cocoon made headlines by moving from its long-standing Amnesia residency to Pacha in 2018. The shift surprised many, as Cocoon’s identity was deeply tied to Amnesia’s spacious layout and underground vibe. Unfortunately, Cocoon never quite adapted to Pacha’s smaller, glitzier setting, resulting in inconsistent attendance. After a single season, Cocoon reverted to special events rather than another full summer residency.





6. Transmoderna - Pacha (2019)

Curated by renowned DJ Dixon, Transmoderna offered a blend of art, technology, and electronic music. The night built momentum towards the end of its debut season, featuring an immersive audiovisual experience designed to elevate Ibiza’s nightlife offering. Plans to continue the residency at DC-10 in 2020 were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Post-pandemic, Dixon moved onto other projects, leaving Transmoderna as a one-season wonder.


7. Bodyworks - Hï Ibiza (2019)

CamelPhat, Solardo, and FISHER’s collaborative residency, Bodyworks, was one of 2019’s most successful new ventures, consistently drawing packed crowds. Ironically, its popularity led to even bigger opportunities elsewhere for the DJs involved. CamelPhat and Solardo transitioned to a larger venue at Ushuaïa the following year, while FISHER secured solo headline opportunities. Bodyworks, therefore, ended after a single successful season due to its stars moving onto bigger stages.





8. RichBitch - Hï Ibiza (2019)

Ale Zuber’s urban and reggaeton night RichBitch attempted to capitalize on the growing popularity of Latin and urban genres in Europe. However, launched mid-season, it struggled to break through Ibiza’s traditionally electronic-dominated club scene. Hï Ibiza quickly recognized the limited appeal and redirected its programming towards proven electronic genres, making RichBitch a brief experiment.


9. MUCHO Ibiza - Ushuaïa (2019)

MUCHO Ibiza marked Ushuaïa’s ambitious venture into the Latin music market, featuring heavyweight artists like Daddy Yankee. Despite significant promotion and high-profile artists, the logistics of hosting large-scale live acts proved challenging, and attendance varied greatly between events. Ushuaïa reverted to electronic-focused programming the following summer, though it occasionally continued hosting Latin artists as special one-off concerts.





10. IDOL - Eden (2019)

IDOL at Eden, featuring veteran acts Orbital and Timo Maas, garnered critical acclaim for its forward-thinking approach to progressive house and techno. However, its location in San Antonio and fierce competition from established nights elsewhere on the island limited attendance. The subsequent pandemic reset Eden’s programming priorities, and IDOL never returned.



Why Didn’t These Residencies Return?

Common factors include mismatches between themes and club identity, inconsistent ticket sales, intense competition from established nights, artist availability and evolving careers, and strategic shifts by clubs aiming to optimize their lineups. The global pandemic in 2020 further exacerbated these challenges, cutting short plans for several promising residencies.



Despite their short-lived existence, each of these residencies represents Ibiza’s continual quest for innovation. While they didn't last, they left behind valuable lessons and unique moments that continue to shape Ibiza’s vibrant clubbing landscape.

This Week’s Parties in Ibiza (July 10 - 16)

Ibiza wasn’t always the playground of millionaires and celebrities. Back in the 1970s, it felt more like a carefree haven than a luxury hotspot. The club scene started with an open-door feel, with a blend of laid-back freedom and creative energy. You’d find hippies, travelers, artists, and a few well-connected socialites all in the same place, dancing together under the warm Mediterranean sky. Nobody cared what you wore or where you came from. It was raw, spontaneous, and unpolished - the kind of vibe that didn’t need velvet ropes or VIP lists.



Over time, that spirit has been repackaged into something flashier, but the roots are still always about connection, rhythm, and the kind of nights that feel endless.



Pacha, Ibiza’s iconic nightclub established in 1973, subtly introduced what could be considered Ibiza’s earliest form of VIP culture - a small section reserved for friends and special guests of the club's owners. This early VIP experience was far from today's extravagance, based purely on personal connections rather than purchasing power. Celebrities like Mick Jagger and Bob Marley frequented these clubs, but their experiences were famously integrated rather than separated from everyday club-goers.





Throughout the late '70s and '80s, clubs such as Ku (now UNVRS) and the legendary Pikes Hotel embraced flamboyance and exclusivity in their own right, albeit privately. Ku hosted spectacular events with performances by stars like Grace Jones, while Pikes Hotel’s notorious parties, including Freddie Mercury’s 41st birthday in 1987, hinted at VIP decadence with lavish private celebrations and extravagant champagne-soaked indulgences. Yet, notably, these experiences remained invitation-only, distinctly different from today's commodified VIP table service.



The 1990s ushered in Ibiza’s golden "Superclub Era," defined by massive venues like Amnesia, Space, and Privilege. Despite their enormity, the culture remained predominantly democratic. The dancefloor was king, and DJs were the draw, rather than exclusive VIP experiences. Although clubs like Pacha continued hosting occasional celebrities in understated VIP areas, VIP culture was minimal and understated, essentially providing quiet corners for a select few rather than lavish, purchasable tables. Club nights such as Cream, Manumission, and Ministry of Sound dominated this era, focusing strongly on communal energy and music-centric experiences.





The real shift began in the early 2000s as global clubbing became increasingly commercialized and Ibiza began attracting a wealthier demographic. Superclubs, especially Pacha, recognized an emerging market of affluent tourists and industry elites prepared to pay premium prices for special privileges. Inspired by trends already booming in nightlife capitals like New York and Paris, Ibiza clubs embraced the concept of "bottle service" - where purchasing high-priced bottles of premium alcohol secured patrons exclusive tables and personalized service.



Pacha spearheaded this transition, developing significant areas of the club specifically designed for VIP bottle service. Other major clubs quickly followed suit. By mid-2000s, Amnesia, Privilege, and even traditionally less VIP-oriented clubs were incorporating and expanding dedicated bottle service areas. However, early adoption was tentative - initial VIP areas frequently catered to older clientele seeking respite from crowded dancefloors, rather than younger club-goers who still preferred communal dancing experiences.



The 2010s marked the definitive explosion of VIP culture and bottle service in Ibiza, propelled by the island's deliberate move toward luxury tourism and celebrity endorsement. Ushuaïa Ibiza, opening in 2011, embodied this new era - an upscale club-hotel explicitly catering to high-end VIP clientele with poolside tables, elaborate champagne rituals, and extravagant stage-side seating.





Celebrity appearances and residencies also played a crucial role in glamorizing and normalizing VIP culture. High-profile figures like Paris Hilton, whose DJ residency at Amnesia brought significant media attention, helped transform the perception of Ibiza into an exclusive playground for the global elite. Social media accelerated this transformation, creating a generation eager to showcase their VIP experiences online.



Financially, clubs discovered bottle service and VIP tables were hugely profitable. Prices skyrocketed, with prime VIP tables in venues such as Pacha commanding minimum spends in the thousands of euros. By the late 2010s and early 2020s, this luxury market dominated Ibiza's nightlife economy, with private jet arrivals reaching unprecedented levels as the ultra-rich flocked to the island to experience its exclusive nightlife.



Today, Ibiza’s club scene reflects this dual identity - maintaining its roots as a global dance music destination while fully embracing its modern image as a high-end luxury party hub. The island’s nightlife is now stratified across multiple tiers of VIP, ranging from standard bottle service tables to ultra-exclusive secret areas accessible only to a select few.





Yet, this transition has sparked significant debate. Influential figures within the Ibiza community, including renowned DJs Carl Cox and David Morales, express concerns about the emphasis on exclusivity potentially compromising the island’s original inclusive ethos. Critics argue that excessive VIP segmentation risks stifling creativity and limiting opportunities for emerging talent.



Balancing this, venues like DC-10 proudly uphold an underground spirit by explicitly rejecting bottle service and VIP booths, remaining true to the island’s original, more democratic vision. Additionally, nights like Pacha’s iconic Flower Power continue to celebrate Ibiza’s communal spirit, bringing diverse crowds together on a single dancefloor reminiscent of earlier times.



Ultimately, the emergence and evolution of VIP and bottle service culture in Ibiza reflect broader global trends in nightlife entertainment and luxury tourism. What began modestly in Pacha’s private corners in the 1970s evolved significantly through commercialization in the 2000s and exploded in the luxury-driven 2010s.
