As journalists, historians, and artists continue to shine a light on the Black roots of electronic dance music, a new series of short films directed by London-based Daisy Gaston, aptly titled Connecting the Dots, will be released via Resident Advisor.



The films focus on three cardinal Black, British figures within the UK electronic music community. The first in the series kicked off on July 5 and offers an exclusive look into Future Bounce label founder and BBC 1Xtra DJ Jamilla Walters, aka Jamz Supernova. She reflects on a changing electronic music scene, musings on Afro-diasporic dance records, and passing the proverbial baton to other dance music community members so future generations may understand the cultural and historical significance of Black artists’ contributions.




“Industries around creativity that start from a place of marginalization, or class…It’s seen as cool, it’s seen as edgy, and then somebody may come in with the means and the position to do the same thing and get ten times the amount of interest,” Walters shared candidly in the short film.



“So if we think about those young black and brown kids that started off disco, house, and techno… imagine a more privileged white DJ comes in and starts doing something similar—who’s going to get more bookings? Who’s going to get paid more? Who’s going to have longevity in the industry to be able to do what they’re doing?”




Featuring compelling cinematography by Miguel Cármenes and stunning coloring by Andi Chu of Black Kite Studios, Connecting the Dots grants viewers a unique opportunity to discover a more intimate side of three prominent UK artists as they share their insight on the music, the industry, and the Black roots of dance music.

Sasha once commanded such a strong presence in dance music that indulgent journalists suggested he might be the “son of god” on magazine covers. Nearly two decades later, his influence on the culture has earned him a relatively modest accolade: an honorary doctorate from Bangor University.




Sasha (real name Alexander Paul Coe) was born in the Welsh city of Bangor and first performed as a DJ and producer at the Bangor University Student Union. He did not need to complete any coursework to earn his doctorate in music from the university on Tuesday, July 5th. The progressive house mainstay was instead awarded the honor for his influence on electronic music culture over the years.




“It gives me great pleasure to present Bangor-born Sasha for this honor,” said Bangor University Vice-Chancellor Andrew Edwards. “Sasha has made an outstanding contribution to culture, language, music, and the arts through his creative work. An honorary doctor of music degree is well deserved.”




“I didn’t expect to go back to Bangor University to get a degree as it was where I did my first Student Union job and it has taken me around the world,” said Coe, who returned there for a performance in November 2021.




Coe cut his teeth playing acid house records after attending events at legendary Manchester venue The Haçienda in the late ’80s. By the mid-’90s, his and John Digweed’s names had grown virtually synonymous with the emerging progressive house sound for their back-to-back performances at Mansfield nightclub Renaissance. Sasha and Digweed achieved great success with compilation albums like Renaissance: The Mix Collection and Northern Exposure.




The two artists stopped performing together in 2002 — although they never formally announced that they had parting ways. They played back to back once again at Ultra Music Festival in 2010, and following a surprise set together in 2016 at Ministry of Sound, their paths have crossed far more often, including a return to Ultra Music Festival this year.




April saw Coe celebrate the tenth anniversary of his label Last Night On Earth with the release of ten new collaborations. Later in July, his travels will take him to Sunrise Festival in Kolobrzeg, Poland, and RADIUS in Chicago, US, for a back-to-back set with Digweed.

Sasha Receives Honorary Doctorate from Bangor University

Between Drake’s album Honestly, Nevermind and the Beyoncé single “Break My Soul,” house music has proven a popular (if not controversial) pursuit for chart-toppers in recent weeks. Now, the shoe is on the other foot. Electronic music mainstay Paul Woolford has collaborated with Serbian producer Pessto on a house track titled “Can You Pay” that samples the 1999 Destiny’s Child classic “Bills, Bills, Bills.”




The official remix was “personally approved and signed” by the ‘90s girl group — of which Beyoncé was a member. It’s easy to hear why. Woolford and Pessto pair the iconic hook of the source material with danceable peaks and valleys in their rendition, punctuated by emphatic keys and underscored by a rubbery bass line.









“Can You Pay” is a far cry from the challenging soundscapes that define Woolford’s output as Special Request, ranging from Detroit-reminiscent techno like “Achilles” to the tougher rhythms of “Curtain Twitcher.” It fits well alongside his latest offerings, however. Club-friendly vocal house collaborations such as “Promises” with Diplo and “Tear Drops” with MK stand out in his recent discography.




Nor is it entirely off-brand for the sampled party. While headlines about Beyoncé resurrecting house music with “Break My Soul” triggered resounding groans from genre enthusiasts worldwide, better-informed journalists like Brittany Gaston point out that house has bubbled up to the surface of pop culture numerous times since it coalesced in Chicago’s gay, Black nightlife community in the ‘80s. In the ‘90s, it arrived in the form of hit singles like “Show Me Love” by Robin S and “100% Pure Love” by Crystal Waters. More recently, FISHER’s 2018 single “Losing It” reached #1 on Billboard’s “Dance Club Songs” chart.




How many more pop icons are about to find refuge in the house that Jack built? As with any music trend, that remains to be seen. In the meantime, “Can You Pay” by Paul Woolford and Pessto is available for streaming and purchase across platforms here.

Paul Woolford and Pessto Remix Destiny's Child Classic 'Bills, Bills, Bills'

Joel Zimmerman (aka deadmau5) and Richie Hawtin’s music and gaming metaverse company, PIXELYNX, announced the appointment of Kimberly Knoller as Chief Marketing Officer.




Knoller, previously the CMO for SongVest, a “music royalty platform” that enables fans to invest in music, will oversee PIXELYNX’s marketing strategy and execution for the metaverse company.




The music and gaming crypto startup aims to ease the launch process for artists vying to create immersive metaverse worlds for their fans. It was co-created by Zimmerman and Hawtin, along with several other veterans from the music and gaming industries, Ben Turner, Dean Wilson, and Inder Phull.




In a statement about Knoller’s appointment Phull, PIXELYNX’s CEO, said, “Kimberly has spent a career forging direct relationships between artists and their fans, a skill set that will be vital to us as we look forward to launching the first expression of our music metaverse ELYNXIR.”




ELYNXIR, PIXELYNX’s debut game, has been announced to be available to the public later this year in August.




The music and gaming company revealed in December of 2021 that it had raised around 4.5 million dollars in seed investments to initially build out the metaverse world’s framing. Among the investors already on board for the large-scale gaming and music, crypto project are Animoca Brands, Solana Ventures, Alameda Research, and Hyperedge Capital.




Even more impressively, PIXELYNX has hired developers that have previously worked at Activision, EA Sports, Epic Games, Ubisoft, and Microsoft, leaving many eagerly awaiting more details about the project.

Deadmau5 & Richie Hawtin’s PIXELYNX Appoints Kimberly Knoller as Chief Marketing Officer

A champion of black dance music, curator and producer of classic-leaning house, and a Black DJ, Detroit-born journalist and RA podcast host Ash Lauryn has unveiled a three-part collaborative program with BBC Radio 4. 



The new series, titled ‘Techno: A Social History’, chronicles the genre's spread— beginning with Detroit in the 80s, Berlin in the 90s, and spans all the way to Kyiv, Ukraine in the early 2010s. 



In addition, Lauryn will analyze the historic role techno has played from its origins in queer clubs to movements of civil unrest and politics, and how it has irrevocably promoted the development of subgenres and club culture.



Lauryn tapped a plethora of esteemed artists and outspoken DJs for the BBC documentary project, including Marcel Dettmann, Ellen Allien, Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Honey Dijon and Nastia. The series offers an exclusive glimpse behind the lives of these artists' and their radical roots.

Ash Lauryn Will Host a New BBC Radio 4 Series on Techno’s Origins

International music platform, Beatport, launched a unique documentary series that provides an in-depth look at the lives of the most esteemed artists, producers, and DJs in electronic music today.




Off the Record debuted its first documentary in the series on June 30, featuring Ukrainian DJ Nastia. The film follows the DJ, producer, label boss, and mother as she navigates her career and day-to-day life after receiving a shocking phone call.




Nastia is forced to leave her home after learning of the Russian invasion. Now a Ukrainian refugee, she conveys her relentless drive to continue supporting her family and country by allowing viewers an exclusive peek into several months of touring, traveling, and returning to Ukraine amidst a war that has ravaged her beloved home.




In the documentary, the outspoken artist also delves into her career and family, revealing how she got her early start, raised her daughter as she rose to international fame, and how she will continue to use her platform to spread awareness about the situation in Ukraine.






"I think that our scene is fragile in the end, and I wish that the international music scene would be more active in changing things. What I see is that it's a certain kind of comfort zone which people try to protect—they don't want to be involved and they don't want the music to be involved in politics, or something like war. It's a big panorama, a huge picture, of how our scene is, truly. You can analyze it and see good things, and bad things, I just see it my way. Everyone will see it differently…depends on his or her experiences," the artist candidly shared as she reflected on the industry and what it meant to be outspoken in her position as a high-profile artist.

Less than two years ago, former President Trump issued ByteDance-owned platform TikTok with an executive order to cease operations in the US after unsuccessfully banning US citizens and businesses from issuing any “transactions” with the platform, primarily citing “data privacy” concerns.




Last summer, President Biden rescinded the orders to Trump’s chagrin and plenty of celebration from US TikTok users. However, in an unforeseen 360 turn of events, FCC commissioner Brendan Carr called for immediate removal of the app from both the Google Play and Apple App stores.




The commissioner took to Twitter to air his grievances in an open letter on June 28. In it, he addressed Google—now Alphabet—CEO Sundar Pichai and Apple CEO Tim Cook to formally request the app be withdrawn from their digital storefronts.




The letter mirrored many of the former president Trump administration’s privacy qualms about the app. It was shared a week after Buzzfeed unveiled its findings post-review of leaked audio from over 80 internal TikTok meetings. The audio showed that TikTok engineers in China repeatedly accessed nonpublic data about US TikTok users between September 2021 and as recently as January 2022.




Carr’s open letter rehashes much of the article’s findings and explicitly addresses the CEOs, adding, “Tiktok’s pattern of conduct and misrepresentations regarding the unfettered access that person’s in Beijing have to sensitive US user data…puts it out of compliance with the policies that both of your companies require every app to adhere to as a condition of remaining available on your app stores.




“At its core, TikTok functions as a sophisticated surveillance tool that harvests extensive amounts of personal and sensitive data,” continues Carr. “...TikTok collects everything from search and browsing histories to keystroke patterns and biometric identifiers, including faceprints—which researchers have said might be used in unrelated facial recognition technology—and voiceprints. It collects location data as well as draft messages and metadata, plus it has collected the text, images and videos that are stored on the device’s clipboard. The list of personal and sensitive data collected goes on from there. This should come as no surprise, however. Within its own borders, the PRC has developed some of the most invasive and omnipresent surveillance capabilities in the world to maintain authoritarian control,” claims Carr, presenting his case for removing the app.





The commissioner then followed by addressing Apple and Google’s oft claims to operate their app stores in a manner that “protects consumer privacy and safeguard their data” and requested they apply their App Store policy to the app and promptly remove TikTok from the digital storefronts for failing to comply with their policies.





If the tech juggernauts don’t abide by Carr’s suggestion to eliminate the app from their app stores, the commissioner has requested tech CEOs separately respond to him with their reasoning on why “the surreptitious access of private and sensitive US user data by persons located in Beijing coupled with TikTok’s pattern of misleading representations and conduct does not run afoul of any of [Apple and Google’s] App Store policies.”

For the first time in 11 years, he’ll flex his unique skill set at Electric Zoo 3.0, performing a rare stateside festival appearance and curating the lineup on his very own Carl Cox Invites stage at the Hilltop Arena on Sunday, September 4. He’ll be joined by some of house and techno’s most sought-after DJs and live acts.



Carl Cox always heeps his ear to the underground, and for EZoo, he’s pulled together a lineup of artists who will light up the crowd with their original tracks, remixes, and edits. These are the artists that are pushing the culture forward. Cox said that he's putting together a very special set including music from his upcoming album Electronic Generations. His first album in over six years, he recently revealed the first track "How It Makes You Feel," a collaboration with Nicole Moudaber, that he's been road-testing for months.



Joining the king of techno is New York City-based tech-house guru Charles Meyer, Ibiza-based superstar Chelina Manuhutu, and Detroit house queen DJ Holographic.

“DJ Holographic has so much house music soul and true techno flavor in the music she plays,” Carl Cox said in a press release. “It draws you in the longer she plays. It really does come from the depths of her heart, you can feel it so much. This will be the first time I will get the chance to see her live, and I for one cannot wait.”



Techno legend and long-time friend of Carl Cox, Loco Dice, will join the Invites lineups. Loco Dice was also last on an EZoo lineup 11 years ago. The two iconic artists have frequently shared stages across the world, but this New York reunion is going to be a special one.



“Dice is always evolving with his sound of music that you cannot put in a musical box at all. He really does push the boundaries,” Cox said.



The prodigious Andrea Oliva and incredible Ilario Alicante will also perform a unique b2b set. Oliva will be stopping by between sets as a resident of Ibiza’s favorite day party spot Ushuaia. Alicante is quickly becoming a festival mainstay in his own right, having already performed at Ultra and EDC Vegas this year.



This year’s Electric Zoo lineup features a heavy influx of underground house and techno talent, and the Carl Cox Invites stage takeover will be the cherry on top for the revamped festival. With only a few months left until the quintessential New York festival returns to Randall’s Island, Carl Cox and friends are counting down the days. As techno continues to dominate the dance floor the world over, we are seeing individual artists shine brighter than ever. One of the scene’s hottest stars is, without a doubt, the magnetic Enrico Sangiuliano. As Enrico turns towards the next chapter of his career, he continues to take bold steps within the industry. Having recently announced his limited release, 10-chapter record label, NINETOZERO, the techno superstar has also shared the conception of a new event series.


Titled NINETOZERO SOLO, the event series will coincide with his unique label, presenting an immersive live experience that aims to highlight club culture and music. The project will launch on June 11 in Amsterdam, with Enrico embarking on a ten date open-to-close run.




Enrico has chosen a fitting home for the event series, the celebrated Marktkantine in Amsterdam. The building was built in 1936 and served as a watering hole for Dutch market traders. It became a club in the 90s just as dance music was beginning to explode in Amsterdam. It was refurbished in 2014 to combine a creative combination of music, art, and food. Unfortunately, after decades of service to the dance music community, the club will soon close its doors. And just as Enrico’s label is destined to the ephemera, so is the venue for this epic run of solo shows.




Enrico grew up in Reggio Emilia, Italy, and was introduced to music at a young age. He began producing on his computer at home in the late 90s and quickly started to attend underground raves. The early 2000s saw him spinning all over Italy before eventually breaking out into the international scene in 2015 when his remix of DJ Boris’s “Can You Hear Me” hit the Beatport #1 spot.




In the following years, he has not disappointed. Enrico has delivered smash hit after smash hit, backing up his production prowess with a propensity for monster big room techno sets. Furthermore, he is one half of the world’s greatest techno power couple, marrying and producing music occasionally with his wife, Charlotte De Witte.

Producer and DJ Spencer Brown has genre-bending tracks across labels like Anjunadeep, mau5trap, Last Night on Earth, and Factory 93. Now, Spencer has taken his career to the next level by launching his label, diviine, a home for tracks that are the products of inspiration from his wide range of techno, progressive, and deep sounds.




Brown is known for living on the cutting edge of dance music. Alongside his new label, he is releasing the “18 Min Loop” NFT, his debut Web3 project and the longest track ever minted. 



He worked with Rising Digital to construct the NFT around his recent track of the same name released in February. The track has received DJ support from some industries leading names such as John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, and Marco Carola.

Spencer Brown Goes Against the Grain With '18 Minute Loop' NFT Launch

Ibiza and Mallorca—two lush Spanish islands known as party and vacation hotspots—have imposed a strict alcohol law that has banned happy hour, two-for-one drinks, and open bars.

This latest attempt to curb alcohol abuse on the Balearic islands also includes a "six-drink rule" at bars, restaurants, and all-inclusive resorts, with a three-drink limit per person during lunch and dinner. In addition, retailers that sell alcohol must be closed from 9:30 p.m. until 8 a.m. daily.

Bar crawls, and party boats were previously outlawed date and remain so. The new rules also include a ban on "balconing," or jumping in-between balconies or from a balcony into a pool.

Fines for tourists caught breaking the rules range from €1000 to €6000, while businesses can be fined €60,001 to €600,000 and shuttered for up to three years.

The new drinking law applies to the popular resort areas of San Antoni de Portmany, Magaluf, El Arenal, and Playa de Palma. It also impacts all-inclusive resorts across both islands.

The law was approved in early 2020 and went into effect in 2021 but has been making the news rounds recently as British tourists travel to the islands and come into contact with the new rules. The current law states the new rules will be in place until 2025. Its approval coincides with the Balearic Islands adding Ibiza to their joint campaign with the British embassy to, as DJ Mag stated, "promote the islands as a safe destination, free of uncivil behavior."

In 2009, the Catalan parliament banned happy hour and other drink discounts like two-for-one in Barcelona. (Catalunya is the autonomous region home to Barcelona, Ibiza, Mallorca, and other scenic locales in Northeast Spain.) Widely perceived as an attempt to limit the recklessness of drunken British stag parties, the government said it was about public health, not targeting vacationing Brits.

Jamie Jones Unveils Lineup for Paradise in the Park

House music lovers look no further for their festival desert getaway. Three-weekend festival Splash House has announced its June 2022 lineup, celebrating its ninth year in Palm Springs, June 10-12. The triple weekend festival returns to the Renaissance, Margaritaville, and Saguaro resorts, and its roster looks to include all forms of house music. So if you're feeling the post-Coachella blues, Splash House has solidified itself as a summer festival staple.




The June lineup includes super-producer, and DJ Diplo, DJ sets by Hayden James and Channel Tres, future-funk producer Yung Bae, indie electronic artist Shallou, and a true technician behind the decks UK artist Hannah Wants.




Australian producer Kito, house producer Jerro, and producer/singer-songwriter Pauline Herr will also make their Splash House debut. The lineup also includes rare b2b sets from Manila Killa & Chet Porter, and Dombresky & Noizu.

Brooklyn Mirage Unveils a Breathtaking New Redesign

After a stellar first year Auris Presents, the team behind ARC Music Festival persists in proving that they want to be at the forefront of the house and techno festival scene. Their debut edition of ARC in Chicago last year was only the beginning. The upcoming iteration on Labor Day Weekend (September 2-4) will blow attendees away. 




ARC stunned with an even more in-depth lineup drop. Pulling in superstars such as Acid Pauli, Pan-Pot, De La Swing, Mark Farina, and Öona Dahl to grace the decks. The stacked initial lineup for ARC already included legendary artists like Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Fatboy Slim, Skream, and Gene Ferris. This announcement only heightens the appetite to attend.




ARC also announced other artists playing the ARC Car Stage. The GoodBus is a converted school bus with a mean 10,000-watt speaker system. Set to host supporting artists including Alex Kislov, Dangerwayne, Dani Deahl, and to be announced which true to form with the main bill will bring some heat to the tunes.




Additionally, beloved party conglomerate Elrow has announced its theme for their festival stage, Rowmuda Triangle. Elrow’s stage design, entertainers, and hijinx have made them one the most celebrated party purveyors in the world. So anticipate a party of epic proportions at their wildly curated stage in the Windy City.




As with the first-year, attendees can expect, on top of a world-class lineup, a specially and carefully curated exhibition stacked with elements and art to usher them between four distinctly different and immersive stage environments. All while truly showcasing Chicago’s distinct and beloved culinary scene and showcasing what midwest festivals are all about.

ARC Music Festival's Stunning Lineup Keeps Getting Better

UK super producer, songwriter, and performer SG Lewis has now released the electrifying DJ set from his surprise Do LaB performance on Coachella’s weekend one. SG Lewis’ dazzling three-hour DJ set was one of the weekend’s most talked-about surprises, drawing in over ten thousand fans to the Do LaB stage for a mix of atmospheric disco, house, and a range of eclectic stylings.


As the creators of Lightning In A Bottle and Coachella’s most immersive stage, Do LaB has built a strong reputation on the Polo Fields for hosting legendary electronic acts alongside next-generation rising stars. One of the stage’s most anticipated aspects is its nightly surprise headliners, with SG Lewis joining other weekend one headliners such as Diplo, Dom Dolla b2b John Summit, and Subtronics. Weekend two welcomed Yung Bae b2b Madeon, Hayden James, LP Giobbi, and DJ Hanzel aka Dillon Francis.


Many of these secret sets are only experienced onsite and quickly fade away into the public consciousness as a singular moment in time. SG decided to release this special set for fans to relive the magic or experience it for the first time.


“The 3-hour set at the Do LaB was probably my favorite experience DJing to date. The extended slot allowed me time to really dive into genres that inspire my own music, and to build slowly in energy over time,” SG said about the set. “I was hesitant to upload the set, as it felt like one of those moments where you had to be there - but listening back to it brings about so many great memories, and so many of you asked so nicely for it. I’ve never received so many messages about a DJ set before, so thanks to everyone for the lovely words. Chopped off the first 15 mins due to an audio issue, but it took me that long to settle in anyway. Hope this recording brings back some great memories to a lot of you too.”





The thrilling Do LaB experience at Coachella is just a taste of what the brand has in store for this year, including the return of their premier multifaceted boutique festival Lightning in a Bottle. SG Lewis Releases Surprise Coachella Set From the Do LaB

In time for Earth Day, SkyNRG, CHOOOSE, DGTL Festival, Revolution Foundation, and Bye Bye Plastic Foundation announced their joined forces on a new launch of a new climate action tool named The Climate Gig.


This new application, available on both desktop and mobile, enables artists, fans, and venues to sustainably appreciate live music voyages. With the common goal of reducing the carbon footprint of journeys to and from events with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and/or carbon offsets from ground transportation.


The tool was created by five leading organizations, all with the foundation of sustainable lifestyle changes to benefit long-term climate sustainability while enabling traveling freely to experience global festivals live. There are separate portals for fans and artist with different functions that give greater visibility to the environmental impact of travel.


For music lovers, The Climate Gig computes and recedes the carbon footprint of their trip based on their choices of transportation and travel destination. Fans can then pick any mix of SAF and high-standards carbon offsets to lower the impression associated with that travel.


The fans’ page differs from artists and music venues as the tool offers a more comprehensive view. Allowing artists to create a profile lets them calculate and reduce the carbon footprint of entire events, staff, transport, lodging, and more. It is also feasible to view detailed order history, including access to in-depth climate project content, and track the positive climate impact.


With more to be announced, supporters and endorsed by artists and festivals already using the tool include Deer Jade, SHARE, BLOND:ISH, and DGTL Festival.



DGTL Festival’s Artist Handler Jelle Lobbes said of the project, “When we reached out to artists about this project, we found out most of them were already engaged in more sustainable travel. Agencies already implemented offset programs for their roster and really thought about their journeys. This showed we’re all on the same page and motivated us to join forces and take the next step forward.”

Club Space, III Points, and Insomniac Partner for Sunset on the Sand

For many electronic music fans, the festival lineup is only a piece of the pie when counting down the days to our favorite festivals. As fans dance through the day and into the evening, the real magic often comes alive at after-parties. DJs dig deeper into their record boxes, fans bring more energy, and intimate and unique venues provide the backdrop for truly memorable shows. One of the best underground promoters in the country, Framework, will bless the Coachella fans with three incredible after-parties this year on April 15-17. 

Framework has long been a part of the Coachella after-hours scene, bringing their forward-thinking approach to the desert year after year. Their new Coachella Valley home is a never before used venue at Thermal Airport. To elevate the mood, they are teaming up with Yuma Tent lighting designers SJ Lighting. And for the first time, there will be a walk-in Framework merch pop-up.

On the first night, they will host Purple Disco Machine, SG Lewis, and Jayda G in collaboration with Rhonda to revive the iconic Queen of the Desert concept. Black Coffee will go BTB with the Martinez Brothers on the second night, and Peggy Gou will round out the lineup.
