Chris Liebing Reflects on a Wild Night with Cell Injection
It’s no secret that the Observe parties embody the spirit of early West Coast techno. Organized by Cell Injection members Drumcell and Truncate, along with visual artist Oktaform, they combine rugged DIY attitude with highly immersive production values.
Case in point: Chris Liebing’s Instagram post ahead of his headline set at a November, 2022 Observe gathering. The thought of reuniting with Drumcell and Truncate was apparently enough to bring him back to a time when the two played it close to the edge.
“The first time I played for my dear friends Truncate and Drumcell was in 2009, but, just as I was about to start, the fire martial shut the venue down,” Liebing wrote. “The story didn’t end there though — within an hour, the sound system was torn down and moved to another warehouse.
“The party went ahead and was an amazing, memorable experience,” he went on. “These guys know all about resilience and making things happen. The L.A. scene wouldn’t be what it is without them.”
Two years prior, Liebing extended a helping hand that played no small role in putting Drumcell and Truncate on the map. After they released their collaborative Kommunicate EP in 2007, Liebing was among its most crucial supporters.
He didn’t stop there; he gave the two artists a guest mix on his world-famous CLR Podcast series. Back then, appearing on the platform was enough to launch your career — and it arguably did exactly that Truncate and Drumcell.
Those curious can see West Coast techno’s chilling mystique in all its glory at the next Observe party in Los Angeles on June 17th. Dasha Rush, Matrixxman, Hyperactive, and Dean Paul are billed for this edition. Tickets and more information are available via the Resident Advisor event page.
