Quick Q&A: MoBlack

MoBlack has spent years helping bring Afro House to a wider global audience, both behind the decks and through MoBlack Records. The Italian DJ, producer, and label founder has earned support from Black Coffee, &ME, Rampa, Solomun, and Pete Tong, while his years living in Ghana have had a lasting influence on his relationship with African music and culture. His work has also extended beyond his own releases, including a period as A&R Manager for Traxsource’s Afro House division.

MoBlack talks about the record that changed his career, why Berlin remains one of his favorite places to play, the song that reconnects him with his roots, and the artists still on his collaboration list.

What’s the most memorable moment of your career?

When “Yamore” became a worldwide hit.

If you weren’t a DJ/producer, what would you be?

I would have just continued with my previous job as a commercial manager in a food processing company.

What’s your go-to snack or drink before a show?

Usually fruits and water.

What’s your favorite city to play in, and why?

Berlin, because the crowd is there for the music only, not for the DJ and not for the girls.

How would you describe your sound in three words?

Hybrid, innovative, and organic.

What’s one non-music-related thing that makes you happy?

Peace.

What’s a track that always brings you back to your roots?

“Madan” by Salif Keita.

If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be?

Dixon, Bedouin, Black Coffee, and Rampa.

What’s your favorite non-music-related hobby?

Traveling.
